From the Scrapbook: 1982 Clemson at Georgia

In this installment of "From the Scrapbook", we look at the 1982 contest between the Tigers and the Dawgs. On Labor Day in 1982, at 9:00 p.m. on ABC television, the two previous College Football National Champions were scheduled to play each other in their season opener: our Clemson Tigers (1981 champs) were visiting the Georgia Bulldogs (1980 champs). In those days, this was the highest profile time slot for season opening games. (Please recall that in '82, ESPN was just a toddler, three years of age, and the "big three" networks controlled what football there was to broadcast.)

And how big was this game? Well, big enough for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution to ink a two-page centerfold in the Sunday sports section previewing the Monday night confrontation! And read how Jesse Outlar, Sports Editor for the Atlanta Constitution*, reviews the game as a "Regional Rivalry, National Audience". (*Yes, back in 1982, both Atlanta and Greenville were still publishing morning editions and afternoon editions of their respective newspapers!)

Included are multiple articles from the days before and after the big game from The Greenville News-Piedmont and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Also, a little memorabilia: a copy of "The Kickoff" and the cover of the TV Spotlight which highlighted the most important TV viewing for the upcoming week (it was included in your Sunday edition of the Greenville News-Piedmont).
