Had to keep two quarts of oil and a gallon of water with me at all times. School buses were faster from stop lights.
Most of my friends drove beaters. Some kept BMX bikes in the trunk for the inevitable breakdown.
Kids these days with "POS" cars that go a quarter million miles have no idea how good they have it.

My first was a ‘56 Mercury. A decent car with 3 on the column and OD. My second was a disaster- I inherited my dead grandmother’s ‘60 Impala. A six cylinder with a 2-speed tranny. I had to have 2 gallons of oil to get me from Orangeburg to Clemson. Only good thing about it was there were no mosquitoes along I-26 after I passed by. tigercee

my Dad's auto shop growing up. This kid's dad tow barred his little old Honda CVCC, one of the first Honda Civics, back when they were REALLY tiny, over to our shop. He said his son told him it had made a noise, and then wouldn't crank anymore.
I opened the hood, and could not stifle a laugh. I said:
"It could be that big hole in BOTH side of the engine block?"
I double durn garnTEE it had made a whole LOT of noise. They just towed it away, no way they were going to spring for another engine for a "durned furrin' car" at that point in time.

81 Monte Carlo at a college auction for 1200 dollars. Got it repainted for 300 more and sold it for 3800. Bought a Mustang II and loved that crappy little car. Sold it 2 years later and bought a Chevrolet Spectrum, brand new for 8000 cash.

1963 Chevy truck. Three on the tree.
It was my dad’s and he gave it to me to drive to school and work. It was originally white, but by the time I got it, it had very little paint left on it. It had a twin cockpit dash that had more steel in it than most cars today have in the entire car. It was a tank!

‘66 Plymouth Fury. 318 engine. Pretty strong. Very nice car for the time. No title. My old man gave it to me, for no good reason. It was only the third time I’d ever seen him in my whole life. The right front fender was smashed to almost unrecognizable junk. We later surmised that he was hammered, and did a hit and run, and the easiest way to ditch it was to give it away. Last time I saw him, he was headed out of town on a Greyhound bus. Wish I still had it.

Mine was a 1974 Camaro Blue with a black vinyl top with huge wide cragar chrome mags on the rear with are shocks and small cragar mags on front.
I was 15 years old and got my permit & SCDL two weeks later in my dads 1981 ford Fairmont, then got the Camaro couple days later because my brother wanted to buy a 1979 Trans Am and needed to sale his Camaro.
I had blue and white feather roach clips hanging from the rear view mirror. I had worked and saved for it so I could buy it from my brother.
This one looks like it except mine had a black vinyl top.

and drove the tires off it on trips to and from Rock Hill.
Returning to CU one weekend, I heard a loud noise, glanced out the rear view and saw some metal on the interstate, as the car drifted off the highway. Walked up to a gas station at the exit (fortunately close to the CU exit on I-85,) told the owner what happened. Wound up selling the car to him for parts, and he gave ne a ride back to the campus.
Didn't buy another until January 1969, my senior year, when I bought a new 88 Olds Delta, which was stupid, considering I knew I'd be leaving for overseas, military duty within the year. The Corvair had cost me $400, the '69 Olds $4000. When I arrived in Mainz, Germany in late November 1969, I ordered a Triumph Roadster from Great Britain, which started my love affairs with convertibles that's lasted now for over 50 years.

I wasn't far behind him and got to see it sitting just onto the shoulder. I almost ordered first car while in Viet Nam - could have it delivered from England tax free and have it there when you got home. Big risk when you know you might not get home.

INLINE six cylinder engines in 1969. BUT, turns out via the Interweb, they DID offer the GMC 305 cubic inch V-6 as an engine option in CHEVY pickups as well. You had a relatively rare beastie there.

Not the sport model, but the old standard blue 4-door. I carried at all times in the trunk: a toolbox, plenty of water, a box of motor oil, and transmission fluid.
To this day, I'm not sure how I kept it running 2 1/2 years. On trips over 150 miles, I had to make 2 stops, let it cool, and top off the fluids.
It mostly stayed parked down on shotgun alley.

1976 AMC Hornet. Car was gifted to me since I had no money in college. The car was actually really, really good. Kept it for a few years after graduation than gave it to my younger sister. She drove it another few years than donated to a friend who needed transportation. Ran for years after that. We’d all get together once in a while and laugh and talk about the good times with the vehicle. Fun memories.

One of my brothers had that Pinto you describe. Those were infamous for exploding into a ball of fire in rear end collisions due to the placement of the gas tank just in front of the rear bumper, thanks Chief Engineer Lee Iococca. My brother's was kind of like a Fred Flintstone car, in that the rear floor was completely rusted out and you could watch the road go by beneath your feet.

My Dad brought home a 1964 Chevrolet Nova complete with 4 doors bald tires and ripped seats. I was 15 years old. I think he could see my disappointment and said “hmm if you don’t like it I suggest you get a job”…had a job in a week and bought a Camaro 6 months later…he was brilliant…

Yessssss! I had one of those Pintos too. I was driving back from Charleston on I-26 and ran over a piece of an old tire on the road that hit under my car. As I drove on I noticed my gas gage needle was visibly moving towards E. I stopped and looked at the notorious gas tank under the back of the car. A steady drip of gas was hitting the highway. The tire shred had knocked a hole in it. I got off in Orangeburg and made it to the gas station just before the gas needle hit E. An old guy at the gas station got a piece of wood, whittled on it a bit and plugged the gas leak with the wood plug. He charge me $20 and said that would work for a day or two. It was still working when I traded it in a year later.

Bought a '71 Vette out of the Charlotte showroom for $5,200 and got a $300 rebate after getting out of Walter Reed. That was about the entire pay for my almost 3 years in the Army - found out after I bought it that I couldn't afford collision insurance. Only kept it a year because of having no air conditioning and got a 1973 model.

I was like Clover. No car in high school or college. Rode a 10 speed bike while at Clemson. First car came with my wife. Her Dad bought his old company car and gave it to her when it was time for him to get a new one. It was a ‘77 Chevy Impala 4 door. Drove like a tank. We only had that one car for the first year or so after we got married. After CU graduation in December 1984, we moved to Florence. I rode my bike to work for about 6 months and got run off the road by a truck on the way home one night and went out and bought a used Nissan Sentra with about 100k miles on it. That would be the first car that actually had my name on the title.

You could also fairly easily fix anything wrong with your car at that time for reasonably cheap. As long as you had a bit of common sense you could disassemble and reassemble whatever was wrong. No $1500+ ECM's or a $1000 wiring harness etc. The only thing I'd take 10/10 times modern over old school is fuel injection. I do not miss the days trying to cold start my old Firebird, in winter especially. You can pry my turnkey starting out of my cold dead hands.

'65 MGB for $500 that would go 85 mph with a tailwind. Probably best feature for a teenager. 2 lb mallet instead of lug wrench. If top was down had to park it in sunlight to get top warm enough to snap it secure. Love to have it back.

First car was 1982 Chrysler Laser. Totalled it about 6 months later after a car ran a red light. Then got a 1984 Dodge Daytona which was the exact same chassis and body style. Both my dad bought. While at Clemson the first vehicle I bought on my own was was a 1991 Nissan 4x4 Extended Cab pickup, purple of course. Still have it in the driveway.

I had a '77 mustang ii Ghia with a V8 302.
That's a lot of motor for that little car. My best friend at the time had 84 Z28 and we raced all the time.
He would take off and then the mustang would bark second right by his door and be gone.
I put a Bose surround sound system in the rear quarter panels and front doors with an Amp mounted under the dashboard that would get hot enough to fry an egg on.
Coupled with a Concorde head unit
That thing would run you out of there. This was way back before BOSE became a household name. I sure loved that car

Metallic red. Red/Mauve interior with a nice cigarette smell from prior owner 5 speed manual
I grew up in Daytona Beach and so it was a must to tint the windows, put a black spoiler on the front and fog lights. In retrospect, pretty useless (not the tinting) but as a teenage male - I had.no say in the matter. Was ideal car for me at the time I’m HS - had the manual so felt like it was sporty (and with THAT spoiler!). And plenty of room in the back (with seat folded down )for a couple of surfboards.
She was a good car.

Oh man....you all had LUXURY. I learned to drive on a 1948 (I think) Willis Jeepster - uniquely odd vehicle. It was not some vintage rehab, just my Dad's outside man toy. It also required carrying a case of oil. The one option it had was the heater which worked occasionally. 3 on the column, starter on the floor, lots of curtains. Stopping uphill was a nightmare situation.
I still remember the day I walked home to inform my Dad I had locked up his toy deep in the woods. He was so angry...and my Mom was so happy, celebrating "one less money pit!"

I had a '78 Plymouth Volare' with a slant-6 engine and a 3-speed manual shifter on the floor.
I'm glad I learned to drive with a manual transmission. Of course, I put in a stereo that was work 2x the car. Good times!

I went through highschool driving my dad's 1976 Volare coupe that he got brand new for cheap as a left over when he bought a 1977 Volare wagon. I think it cost him $2700 out the door and the Wagon (which he ordered) was $4300 because it also had Ziebart rust proofing. That was one heavy car. It would drift on all the local gravel roads like a dream.

Mine was a ‘62 Four door Ford Falcon with a 6 cylinder 170. Would do 100 mph but would take 2 to 3 miles before it got there. You could up the hood and literally step inside and work on the engine. Would get me from A to B but I don’t miss it.

'74 Chevy Vega with no a/c, vinyl seats and an am radio. Left a puddle of rust everywhere I parked.

so worn out, it would not start with the starter. I was 11 years old when my Dad bought it for $20, gave me the keys, and told me to "Take this around the field roads and learn to drive." I already knew how to shift gears and steer from farm tractors, so driving a car was no big deal. Had a half dozen kids about my age on the farm push it off, pop the clutch, and then all hop in and ride!
First ROAD car was a 1955 Chevy 210 2 door sedan. Pulled it out of my Dad's auto graveyard, put a 265 V-8 in it with the help of my older brother, painted it Ford Grabber Green, and drove it to school once I got a driver's license. The Green Bomb, my older sister called it. Rubber floor carpet by J.C. Whitney. Like the OP's Pinto, I had to carry extra oil along as well.

Sounds like what we used to call a field bomb. Lots of my friends were given cars like you describe to drive around in the field to learn how to drive.

Had a Dodge Dart in 1978 with push button gears my sophomore year. Dad bought it for me., have no idea the age. Coming back to Clemson late one night after dating my future wife, had a flat tire only to find out I had no spare. First time I ever hitchhiked.

It was much safer hitching a ride back then!
I gave a guy a ride in 1991 on the sawgrass expressway in West palm beach who had a bag & he was crazy so I stopped at the rest area & he was stealing beer cans putting it in his socks & anywhere else.
I dumped his bag on the sidewalk & left him there, last time I did that ever.

My first was a 1977 Toyota Celica. It had a lot of problems, but once I got all the maintenance caught up it was the most reliable car in the driveway. -25 degrees out...my dad had to ask to borrow my car to go to work because both his vehicles would not start. What I miss the most is that if I kept a coat hanger and some duct tape in the back there was just about nothing that would go wrong that I could not fix to keep it going. Tthat Toyota 20R engine was tough as nails. The body on that car is what died. The engine was still going stong when the body rusted away from it.
