He was my dad’s football coach a long long time ago at Newberry High School. My dad still talks about him. He was a big influence on my dad’s life.

Hate to hear that. When I lived in Greenville Sheridan was the man. First one I can remember.

I remember he was HC at The Citadel in the 70’s when I lived in Charleston. A good man by all accounts.
RIP Art Baker Go Tigers

Definitely recall him serving on Howard's staff. Thought he was the OC at one point, but my memory could be faulty. Saw a few games when he and Sheridan were at FU. He was certainly granted a long and successful life.

He was a really good man. During my first General Leave knob year (first time allowed off campus ) @ The Citadel I was walking back to campus through a neighborhood we had no business being in that late. He stopped, picked us up, and carried us back to our barracks … explaining the dos & don’ts on how to safely get back to campus.
Will never forget him and his true love of people.

ECU was so bad it hurt his overall record as a head coach.

Art was a neighbor of mine and a friend for several years. He was a great guy and always willing to use his network to help with worthy charitable causes. Several times he would get signed helmets from legends like Bobby Bowden for charity auctions for us. The world needs more people like Coach Baker.
BTW- one of those ECU teams knocked off a highly ranked Miami Hurricane Squad. Jeff Blake who played for the Bengals was the QB on that team.

Never met him while there but did enjoy the games. Though most of them were blowouts, ECU was using the money to build the program by being the cupcake. Got to see 7 of the top 10 teams one year. Without him, we would have never became the best football team in NC lol

He was a class act. Knew him a bit as I took some pics for Furman during his era. Had some fun teams and nice players like Vince Jr and David Whitehurst.

Thanks for posting. Art Baker was a really good man before these mega churches we use to have RA’s ( Royal Ambassador's) on Wednesday nights.
Every year Furman would host an RA event. Friday nights we would go to Furman University. Art Baker would speak and we would have other Christian events. We would either sleep in the gym at Furman or our Gym at our church. That Saturday we would go to the Furman game. We had a lot of fun and Art Baker would come around talking to you us. He gave out Furman stuff. It was a big deal. Churches fill all over the state would come.
I am fortunate to have met Art Baker. He was a man of God and was never to busy to share his testimony or talk to you about your relationship with Jesus Christ.
I am not sure but I believe Bobby Johnson served as Clemson’s DC under Ken Hatfield in 93.

I too remember going to a Furman game with the RA's from my church back in the late 70's when they played downtown at Sirrine Stadium.

I also remember hearing Art Baker speak at a men’s brotherhood and or a banquet at first Baptist in Anderson, when I was in high school or college probably. He told The funniest little joke of a story. He said at Furman they sent out pre-application forms to potential recruits just to test their knowledge of certain things. He said one recruit from Georgia sent his pre-application form back, and where it said state of health he put Georgia, and where it said Sex he had written in “ not since last weekend”. Art then said they forwarded that pre-application form down to the folks at US C in Columbia!! more than 40 years later, I still remember that joke! He truly was a Christian Southern gentleman and I’m sure helped mold many young men into doing great things in their lives!
