It was planned before hand that he would sit out the second half and he was coaching his backup on the sideline.
This narrative that he broke a record and proceeded to quit on his team is just false.

It's still a bad look and always will be, especially the way they post. It's a selfish move, it just is and goes against the team concept.
Now you could argue he sacrificed for the future of the team by letting the backup play, but I don't see it that way. Otherwise. Every bowlgame starter should do the same.

You sound like that makes it ok? Well, it’s still crap and that will be his legacy for life. He’s a very highly payed person to PLAY football, not quit on your team at halftime.
Anyone justifying this crap needs to wake up and get a life.

Why is it okay to sit out an entire game but not second half. His career is put in jeopardy by playing at all. I see no problem with playing or sitting. It’s his choice.

Because playing a half deflates the argument that he's doing it for his safety. Why is it more risky to get injured the second half?
He wanted the record, didn't care about the team winning, and it shows.

Bro it was the pop tarts bowl. These second rate bowl games are more for next years players anyway.
I say kudos to him for breaking the record and proceeeding to coach his teammate up for next year trying to get a win.
I think people like you just look for a reason to bash someone. It’s part of the negativity that surrounds sports.

I would imagine the coaching staff wanted to get next years QB some reps, and I’d be interested to know how many of this years departing starters played the second half.
Also if I was the kids coach I would definitely encourage the kid to go for the NCAA record before hanging up his college jersey, but I guess that’s just me.

1. The story that the coaches wanted to evaluate the back up doesn't pass the laugh test.
2. I'm confident the plan was made during preparations that Ward would play at least until he broke the TD record and if he broke it in the first half then he wouldn't play the second half. I am confident that Ward and Cristobal knew that was the plan before the game started. It wasn't something Ward decided on during the game.
3. Cristobal is an imbocile for not just admitting this in the post game presser and saying essentially, "The decision was made in private and I'm not gonna discuss it." That leaves open the possibility that Cam quit on his team. Cristobal essentially threw the guy who saved his job under the bus.

More BS.
Similar to your last points which made no sense...why couldn't Ward have coached his backup in the first half, too?
I don't care who made the decision. QB, Coach, Mom and Dad...the optics are terrible and there's no valid explanation.

I think we should all get used to these antics...don't have to like it, but it is college football in today's world. I am thinking the La Vegas oddsmakers and the gamblers must be really be pi**. I am pretty sure Miami's QB switch had an unplanned effect on the $$$ outcome for the game...anybody agree??

Regardless if it was planned, a true competitor would have sacrificed anything to get his team a W. It was pure selfishness, plain and simple. I am assuming he probably also cost the coaches a bonus as well. I imagine their contract has a bonus for a bowl win.

That backup will still be the backup next year after they bring in another hired gun, getting him some coaching is laughable. If any of that was true, Cristobal wouldn’t have had trouble telling people that at the postgame press conference, instead he gave the typical response ( we will keep those conversations private) what a joke he and that program are.

Can't wait to see his NFL contract.
Cam will play the first half of the Super Bowl unless he is up for contract negotiations the following year. At which time he will take himself out of the game so as not to jeopardize his NFL future. He will be more than happy to stay at said game to offer advice and any coaching necessary to the team's backup QB.
sounds legit.

It’s common place for NFL players to sit once meaningful play has stopped for a variety reasons.
Could be that a team no longer has a chance at the playoffs. You gonna play your franchise QB when you are 4-10? You wouldn’t last long as an NFL coach.
Cam Ward is about to be drafted as possibly the number one pick and you want him grinding it out to win the Pop Tarts Bowl.
Laughable.

For the NFL franchise, the QB is commonly possessed if a multi-year contract that isn’t constrained by terms which take into account the college’s academic parameters.
The NFL team’s best decision (for the team’s business interests, not the player’s) is to protect the QB.
College is an entirely different deal. CFB teams are reliant to some degree on low-NIL paid FB players. Esprit de corps means a lot more to CFB players than NFL players (all of whom are paid middle salaries at the very least).
Thus, the comparison between the best interests of a CFB team and a NFL team is deeply flawed.

Thanks for the laughable, that was the intent.
Personally, I couldn't give two shiats what Cam Ward or Miami do. What was on display was the definitive "Ima git mine" culture the college football has chosen to embrace. How any player could in good conscience stand on the sidelines while his TEAM was trying to win a game is beyond me. If he was indeed protecting his assets, he probably should have been at home, in the gym or at least someplace else. But no, he chose (and Miami endorsed) to have at least one more first half show. Did that up his value?
A lot of people say that these bowl games don't mean anything. Nonsense. They mean something to somebody. Cam Ward and the University of Miami said we don't care what it means.

Cam should fire his agent because his agent didn’t talk him out of such a stupid idea.

I thought their players fighting (amongst themselves) on the sidelines was more embarrassing for the team as a program. Typical Miami madness.

Either you're all in and want to play to win the game or you're not. If he just agreed to stay in until he broke the record, then it was all about him and nothing about the team. I don't think you'll ever convince me otherwise.

This is so messed up. First, if the coach knew then he should have never played the first half. Second, how do you think those offensive linemen felt when they ran off the field and saw their star quarterback holding a clipboard. Don't step on the field if you aren't willing to give everything you got. If it's a meaningless game then nobody should have played.
