FOR THE YOUNGER CROWD: old football weekends...

Looking through old papers early today, I found a letter from the CDA...Central Dance Association...run entirely by Clemson students, that I received in July 1965 upon my entry to CU. In those days the CDA sponsored dances during home football weekends usually on Friday and Saturday nights. They were usually held in the cafeteria facing the old quadrangle amid the "tin cans." The letter stated that the entertainment the prior year included Mary Wells, Major Lance, The Impressions and Dionne Warwick among others. The cost for the entire upcoming fall season: $12...and I had to scrape that up! Most of the students I knew attended the games and dances with or without dates, and after beer was finally allowed on campus crowds would dash to their dorm rooms for the brews during dance breaks. Most of my friends and I made certain we had weekend dates during our freshman year, as the upperclassmen would "command" dateless "Rats" to dance alone or with each other. Thinking of those days always helps to get me READY FOR SOME GOOD, OLE CLEMSON FOOTBALL! HERE WE GO-O-O-O-O-O TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"duck walks" on the quad, eh? The "chore" I hated the most were the constant trips to Dan's for burgers...the shoe shining and cheers, I didn't mind. You guys did a heckuva job indoctrinating us "rats" into the "family." I know it's passe now, but I'm still glad I went through the Rat System. Thanks....

have played at CDA dances in Harcombe what seems like 1000 times now - has mentioned many times those days and the Rat Hops, etc.
By the time I started in 1973 those days were over - the CDA was still big-time on campus be no dances anymore - did a great job with big rock acts in Littlejohn, though.

Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, although I liked the dances better. It was always hilarious watching the guys sneaking out for quick beer trips in the dorms.

Then you must remember the buses full of girls from Winthrop that arrived for the dances. Those of us that could not scrape up those huge amount of $$$ would hang out of the windows of the tin cans and watch all those girls. The younger crowd might not remember the days when you could count the girls on CLEMSON campus on 2 hands.
Now let's play some dang football.

Duceman, We are fellow rat classmates and I was there for Ike and Tina as well. I had my girlfriend from Greenwood at the dance and was not hasseled by upperclassmen that night. Was that the year that Bob Hope was in Littlejohn?

I think thats right. By the way the president of the CDA was on my hall (New F) that year. I think his name was Bazemore from Beaufort, SC. He was also a cheerleader.

Duceman, I seem to remember #### Harpootlian as president of CDA that year. His roommate was Tim Rogers who was student body president I think. I spit shined their shoes one night. CDA were BMOC back them, right up there with jocks....

Representatives, was Student Body President from 1968-1969, while D!ck Harpootlian was one of the Editors on The Tiger staff. He was the longtime Solicitor in the 5th Judicial Circuit and now is Chairman of the S.C. Democratic Party. He is listed in Wikipedia. Jim Buck was President of the CDA from 1968-1969, while Jim Barker was an officer, also.

President was probably one of the more entertaining, student political events, while I was there, and I don't ever remember seeing Earle without that big grin on his face.
