I don’t pretend to know the desires of a talented teenager’s heart, but clearly playing time, NFL prep, and mentorship are what we offer along with the promise to (1) develop a boy into a man and (2) graduate with a degree. Those are extremely noble and entirely worthy opportunities.

Unfortunately, it appears less and less that what we offer is what is desired.

If I’ve learned anything in life, it’s that relationships matter and it’s who you know, not what you know. It’s hard to sell that long term vision to a short term minded kid and parent. The player parents I’ve met at Clemson all seem to understand and value this. Dabo is looking for the needle in a haystack but so far has been good at finding them.

A lot of what you mention, however, are things we used to do well. Outside of DB’s and interior DL, what position do we develop well anymore? Maybe TE? We can’t develop LB’s to save our life since Brent left, and that’s why we were forced to run a 4-2-5 most of the season due to being unable to develop one of the most highly rated LB recruits in memory. Remember Anderson Jr in the spring game? Did he play at all? Most positions show lack of quality depth anytime we have to go to the second string, and many times, the 2nd stringer has been on the team for many years at this point. It feels like complacency has set in with the program, and the coaching staff is resting on what it did in the past. I worry that Dabo is just coasting until he decides to hang it up, and fear that the program will be where it was when he took over, when he decided to hang it up or move on.

I want to attack this degree point first. We're a middle-tier state university academically. We probably are the best college in South Carolina (Yeah, I don't think Furman has any prestige outside the state). But you act like we're Harvard or Yale and that our degree is magically worth tons more than everyone else's. Choosing Clemson over other schools and turning down massive amounts of NIL money is absolutely insane. Our recent decommitments have chosen better schools academically whose degrees mean more (Duke, UNC, Michigan) and then also received hundreds of thousands of dollars to do so. How is that short-sighted? I'm a pretty highly-accomplished Clemson graduate. I'd do the same thing every single time.

As for your other points, I just don't get this thinking. (1) What makes you think we're any better at preparing players for the NFL than other programs? We've had very few players who have had extended success at the next level. (2) I don't know what "mentorship" means in this context and why you think we're leagues better than everyone else. (3) This idea of "developing a boy into a man" is just asinine. They're adults already. We have a bunch of scandals too. Our best player ever, Deshaun, had one of the biggest NFL scandals of the last 20 years. Sure, we don't actively recruit criminals like Georgia or Florida State, but I can't believe how pervasive this myth is that we only recruit golden children and then develop them into wonderful people. It's also illogical. Supposedly we only recruit the best people. So why do we have to develop them into men? (4) A degree from Clemson is fine and all, but players usually aren't in real majors, and they do take a bunch of crip courses.

Add the Clemson FB team culture. While not everyone prizes culture to the extent that it factors in as the top factor, it can make enough of a difference to offset other programs’ reputations of putting more of their players into the NFL than Clemson.

Also, when adding NIL money factors into the equation, the factors of PT, NFL prep, mentorship, and culture can allow us to compete with a lesser financial offer than what a wealthier program can offer.

In the complete absence of NIL money, it is hard to imagine a recruit valuing the supremacy of Clemson’s culture / NFL prep / mentorship / PT as beating another School’s offset offerings + NIL money.

What is this Playing Time and Mentorship you are mentioning?

The best four players on the team are true freshmen Sammy Brown, TJ Moore, Bryant Wesco, and soph TJ Parker. Brown watches from the bench. Moore and Wesco are now starting after backing up far inferior upperclassmen WRs. Should these four talents be mentoring the vets?

Peter Woods has been invisible. Is he injured? Mafah 17 carries 17 yards vs Pitt. Spotty vs uSC. Is he hurt? Little Playing Time for faster healthier freshman Jay Haynes?

Mickens, Terrell, and Miller have been solid. Thanks men. Hauser is a future star with FG team blocking. Hard to lead when you lack talent in senior and junior classes. Keep grinding Tigers, and coaches, play your most talented players.

You’ll get to play after some time, but the seniority players will get most of the snaps even if hurt. If you do play, we might change the scheme even if you are doing well. But, we are family and have a cool slide.

Facts aren’t your friend. Do the research and see the true freshmen that have played over the years under Dabo. Then take into account the number of true freshmen on any team in the country that are truly ready to compete. I promise we’re competitive.

We don't have any in the '25 class and only 1 in the '26 class so we probably don't have too much to worry about.

Actually, the non-super-rich schools are not beneath launching their own NIL temptations to recruits that have committed elsewhere.

Cumulatively speaking, this (I.e., less rich schools outbidding us for committed 3* recruits) could become problematic … especially if we spend too heavily on the higher rated recruits.

We are going to have to pay big to keep current roster star players. That will meaningfully deplete our overall NIL hoard.

They are all looking for $$$$$ now, school doesn’t matter, playing time early dont matter, its all about the $$$$$$.. I can’t blame them, if that Bryce underwood kid really got $12M without ever playing a college down, well good for him.. thats life changing $$$$

Aside from the money, what do we offer that's compelling to HS school Soph - Seniors right now? What do we have that others do not?

Cumulative factors, not just singular factors, represent the ‘Clemson FB program value proposition.’

This is not unlike a real world job. Money matters a lot, but the non-monetary factors are important considerations in why a sought-after applicant chooses one eager employer instead of another.

Clemson’s combination of ‘value variables’ such as Paw Journey, athletic facilities, stability of mentors (assistant coaches staying with Dabo), semi-rural environment, relatively safe community that is comfortable for visitors, good academic reputation, highly visible track record of former FB players finding meaningful employment in Clemson other than as position coaches, etc, are competitive advantages for Clemson in the opinions of some recruits.

We emphasize these factors and offer competitive … not the highest, but not embarrassingly low … money. We’ll keep getting enough highly regarded prospects to win big every few years or so.

Unless the recruit comes from money, the reason to join the program would be if Clemson offers a bigger pay check. That’s where it is on 12-1-25 and going forward. You’d think after losing half the recruiting class someone would tell Dabo.

Unless Clemson becomes a world class producer of counterfeit money, then we’ll never be the highest bidder for a recruit that one of the ‘rich’ schools deem as a must-have player.

The pending 105 scholarship limit roster will be advantageous for those schools that are best at identifying HS prospects which have high potential to be developed. The other factor will be how well Clemson can identify and attract stars in the small college ranks that can be convinced to transfer to us.

We will never have the depth that the rich schools will have, but we will be able to assemble a starting lineup + plus a few key versatile star backups that will allow us to win big once every several years.

Holding it together until the pending NCAA NIL deal becomes reality is the big challenge.

I would pick the school who had the best balance of quality school, quality football program, and the most money being offered. Whoever had the best balance of those 3 things is where I would go.

If you can’t quickly provide multiple answers to that question, you haven’t been paying attention to College Football.

Clemson is 9-3 right now.

Extremely stable coaching staff.

Extremely stable program.

We’re going to start paying players market rate.

We’re not gonna pay everybody that wants to be paid, we’re gonna be judicious, but we’re going to pay players market rate.

Where else do you want to go?

Who establishes this "market rate". If the market rate is established by the schools with the deepest pockets, we won't be able to pay mkt. rate.
