The ONLY rankings that matter
Feb 2, 2017, 1:27 PM

are the one on the Sunday after the ACC Championship game and the one the day after the National Championship Game. And, frankly, the one after the National Championship game is also irrelevant because the Natty is now decided on the field. So there is really only one ranking that is important and relevant. That is not to say that recruiting is not important - it is what teams are made of. But, the recruiting rankings, especially where it depends on the numbers of recruits, are irrelevant.

And I would be willing to bet the farm scout wouldn't have us as the 26th best team. Let them rank us low, it's fuel for the fire.

Should rank based on quality not quantity...

Clemson had one of their best classes in several years....just because they only had 14 scholarships available it does not accurately convey their recruiting class in these rankings.
Not that it really matters anyway...we will be back to the Playoffs soon. That's all that matters.

Should certainly de-emphasize "quantity" ... expecially when

it's obvious that the school doesn't actually have enough scholarships for the number of players they signed.
And as has been pointed out many times, the rankings only crystalize 3-4 years down the road when the players have either lived up to expectations or failed to do so.
Big classes are not necessarily great classes.

Only having 14 scholarships after a National Title proves

this program is built for the future. There were several 4 and 5 star guys who either didn't see the field much or redshirted last season who have had a year under their belt to learn the system and become better/stronger/faster. True scouting is finding talent like Hunter Renfrow and making them stars.

What a shocker that Scout would rank us lower than the others. Maybe it's just me, but it sure seems like they frequently have our guys rated lower than the other services. Oh well, no matter. Our coaches certainly know what they're doing...Go Tigers!

I understand why we have a small class, but I just don't

understand why other schools never have a small class. It is also stunning to imagine that if Watson, Scott and Gallman had not turned pro early, we'd just have 11 scholarships? I've never seen any school with that few. This has to catch up with us at some point.

Why would it "catch up with us" ??
Feb 2, 2017, 5:22 PM
|

As long as we recruit wisely and we keep the max number of players on scholarship, I don't see how small classes can be something that could be negative.
If for some reason, we were "pocketing scholarships" and not taking our full allotment each year because we couldn't attract top talent, then that would be a problem. But, we're using every scholarship we have at our disposal and each one is given to a great player.
How does it "catch up with us" if we maintain our full allotment of high quality scholarship players.

Marcus Edmonds won 2 games for us, other schools would have run him and Johnson off years ago.... Clemson makes a commitment to the signee that commits to us, we stick with them unless they are not willing to do the work.

Some fail to make the switch when recruiting rankings pile up. The game is based on points. Ranking recruits based on points is a flawed pursuit. The switch has to be made based on character, determination, willingness to work. Things that are hard to "quantify". Alabama looks great to young impressionable recruits on a points standing but tell me again, where did they rank after the Championship game this year? Here endeth the lesson.
