Food for thought (long)

Oct 20, 2013, 10:34 PM

I get caught up in the hype and excitement of big time college ball and was as disappointed as everyone else. Just got off the phone with my son, who is a frosh D2 athlete. Just finished his first competition Friday. While he didn't have a good day, I could hear the satisfaction in his voice that he had achieved one of his goals of competing at the college level, as he described the experience to me. There are a bazillion kids out there, including some on our football roster, that do this for the love of the game, the comradarie, etc., and not to "go pro". They bust their butts in practice day after day, and most of them have some reasonably difficult (in some cases very difficult) academic schedules, as well. Some of them rarely see the field at all, let alone in a big game on a big stage. The vast majority of college student athletes ger no scholarship $$.It's easy to sit here on the computer and second guess everything (including their effort, as I was guilty of), but they are kids enjoying the sports that they have loved since they were toddlers. Guess I am just saying that I will try to keep a little better perspective in the future. Most of these kids deserve our support no matter what happens.Still really angry about the outcome though! Sorry for rambling....

Probably the best post I've seen about the game.

I was on the field after the game and saw several of the guys talking to their parents. Most of them were saying things along the lines of "We love you, keep your head up, this isn't the end of the world, I know you're disappointed but you have to keep your head up, etc."

Have said those things many times over the years
