This is not a post about sympathy or donations. I just want to share my story in case you've heard a lot of misinformation.

On September 26 my wife and I took a weekend suitcase and our two little dogs and left our home on Little Germany Rd near Erwin, TN. The only reason we left is I work Saturdays and experience told us our road would be closed for two or three days. The historic flood stage happened in 1901 -- 24 feet at Embreeville, TN. The 2nd highest occurred in 1977 -- 22 feet -- an event my wife remembers well. Our home was safe from those historic levels, but I knew I wouldn't be able to get to work. We left my car and planned to return to our home Saturday evening, maybe not til Sunday.

We didn't count on the Nolichucky River cresting eight feet above the 1901 major flood. Had we been at home on the 27th, we'd have had to scramble to higher ground and watch our home washed off it's foundation.

Gladly, we weren't there. Little Germany Rd was washed out completely. There is now a makeshift road and we have salvaged everything we could. I'll be at work tomorrow while my wife meets a FEMA inspector. That should be a formality and then we'll be able to arrange demolition. It's a total loss.

All that is to say, DON'T LISTEN TO ANY CRITICISM OF FEMA, THE RED CROSS, OR FEDERAL, STATE, OR LOCAL GOVERNMENT. We have received nothing but help and encouragement from everyone we've dealt with. The community has been awesome. The Red Cross has been a blessing. FEMA has been here and makes me proud to be an American.

With all the help we've received, plus a low-interest loan from the SBA to make up the difference, we'll be able to rebuild and to get our lives back on track.

I'm living the scenes that I've only seen on the news previously. FEMA, it seems, is always severely criticized in these situations. I can tell y'all, though, we are grateful for FEMA. the Red Cross, and all the many sources of help and encouragement we've received. Because of this experience, my faith in humanity has been restored.

I left Bristol this afternoon and went down 26 and could not believe the devastation. For the past several weekends we’ve traveled to hickory and the upstate and when going to Asheville was detoured through Erwin and then back on 26 until tonight. I’ve seen tornado and hurricane damage. What I saw this evening I will never forget. We are praying for you and your family. Go Tigers

Cognitive dissonance is a real thing. What do you do when you have a belief and then you're presented with evidence that contradicts that belief? Do you study the evidence and alter your belief? Or do you dismiss the evidence because it's not what you heard on MSNBC so the person presenting it must be an idiot/rube...?

Haha 🤡🤡🤡. If I even feel a cold coming on I take ivermectin. I’ve shaken off everything I’ve gotten within a couple days and had better recovery for my immune system. The only exception was mono last December where I couldn’t hold down the pill for a few days.

I live just over the pass in Green Mountain (the town featured on 60 Minutes last week) and I share your sentiments about the volunteers and help. Thankfully, my house was largely spared, but I witnessed others’ homes wash down the Toe streps from my house. We will recover, but it will be a while, thankfully made shorter by the kindness and efforts of generous strangers. We hosted 5 Samaritan’s Purse volunteers from Ohio last week and I am in awe of the outpouring of generosity and humanity. My neighborhood may look like the apocalypse, but the grace of God is here.

This is simply not true. I wish people would quit spreading this nonsense. FEMA was at our house within two days, and helped us a great deal. Then they are off to the next house very fast and efficient. We had the money within 24 hours to help repair damage, clean up several downed trees in our yard and recover a completely flooded basement. A couple of neighbors I know that had similar damage had no problems out of FEMA whatsoever.

We are still fighting with State Farm to get the correct amount of insurance money out of them. If anybody’s in shambles, it’s State Farm.

Farm Bureau is no help whatsoever. Considering we were well above the historic crest of the Nolichucky, flood insurance didn't seem necessary. At around $4k/yr, we would have spent $64k in premium over the last 16 yrs. In retrospect, I suppose that would have been the prudent choice, but no one ever dreamed the record would be smashed by EIGHT FEET.

Simply beyond comprehension.

This situation is temporary. As soon as congress reconvenes, there will be bipartisan (likely unanimous) legislation passed to fund those depleted accounts.

Claims that these funds have been mismanaged or given to non-citizens are simply not true. Yes, the SBA is temporarily out of funds. In a few short weeks, however, the funds will be there.

misinformation has been appalling, and for the life of me, I just don't undetstand why people engage in rumormongering, embellishing and exaggeration, when so many lives have been lost, harmed, upset from a disaster.

The wonderous and encouraging news have been how the American people from all walks of life from across the nation have risen to the call for help, giving freely of their time, efforts, money and expressions of compassion to assist their fellow man. This type of natural calamity requires such efforts in addition to those rendered by our government and aid organizations, and that has been forthcoming. A younger brother and his wife live on Lake Lure, and I have a number of friends in the Spruce Pine and Little Switzerland area, and all have expressed deep appreciation for the help from all sources and disgust with those engaging in near-obscene rumormongering.

Very best wishes to you.

Thank you for posting that. Hearing all of those unbelievable* lies started by people with a political axe to grind and spread by people all too willing to suspend disbelief because of their grudge against anything government makes my blood boil. It is truly bad for my health. Comments like yours remind me that there are people of good will and good intentions out there.

OK. Now forgive me for rambling...

This is an opportunity. "Why did this happen?" is the obvious question, but it is the wrong one. "What am I gonna do about it?" is, i think, the right question to ask. I live in Hickory and know many people who have spent days and weeks up there with Baptists on Mission doing EXACTLY what Jesus wants us to do. I expect to be up there the weekend of Nov. 16.

I am glad to hear you are well, all things considered. Just know that thousands of us in the foothills are thinking, praying and serving.

My daughter and I were traveling from Marion Virginia to Clemson, and weren’t worried because 90% of our route was interstates. Surely interstate highways never wash out. Right? We got to Erwin and were turned around. I was too stubborn to go back north and then east to 77, so we went west toward Knoxville and then took (I think) route 70 right past the Nolichucky ###. What a scary sight.

What should have been a 3 hour trip took us 14, and I am still not entirely sure how we got out of Asheville.

Glad you and your wife are safe. You will recover.

Wow, I am so sorry you are dealing with this, but thankfully you and your wife and pups are all safe.

I have to agree with your FEMA experience. We only had to deal with water in the basement and our biggest loss was carpet and some bookcases, but we were impressed with how quickly FEMA responded and processed our file, and how nice both inspectors were. (I think our first guy was still in training so we had a supervisor follow up a couple of days later.)

Insurance took a bit longer to respond which was fine since they are covering only our fence.

I'm sure everyone's experience varies according to how quickly they were able to apply and how accessible their property is.

Prayers for your family as you continue dealing with the aftermath of this colossal storm.

David78, My experience with the storm does not even scratch the surface compared to your problems. But I also had a good experience with FEMA. I live in SC and we had a large tree up root in our front yard partially blocking our street. Fortunately we had local business going around offering their services. Within a couple of days I was able to get the tree removed and cleaned up. It cost me $600 not covered by the insurance. I went on line to FEMA and did the paperwork and sent in pictures. I about 6 days I got a check for $750. Of course we had other losses such as all of our frozen food but this check really soothed the pain.
You are in my prayers that you and your family will be able to get your lifes back to normal.
