Also, you would have had to do all your 401k contributions during the spike in October 2021, which no one did. If you purchased last year, or the year prior, you made money.
(This is why certain posters are jumping up and down about "2 years ago." It happens to be a high point in the Dow history.)

Why keep your money in a volatile market when CDs (yes your fathers favorite investment decades ago) are paying 5+% along with other much less risky options out there.

Real estate transactions were over 25% higher than anticipated in ‘22. Invested proceeds in CDs and will return about 4.6 % in ‘23 and likely over 5.0 % in ‘24.
Been through Black Monday in 1987 and Great Recession of 2007-2008. Attributing every swing of the stock market to the sitting POTUS demonstrates a childlike understanding of global economic factors.

But if Trump were president everything would have been fine. There would be no wars on Earth and the inflation on Earth would have existed. If he wins, things will be messed up during his 4 years and they will just blame it on Biden. Trump will be a mess either way.

May set up favorably for the Stock markets.
If the Israel-Hamas conflict settles down and no major conflict with Iran (No major disruption to ME oil production that would reignite inflation).
If a cease fire in Russia - Ukraine war and de facto acceptance of the status quo on territory.
If Washington can avoid budgetary dysfunction. This is purely an American political issue.
If inflation continues trending downward along with solid GDP and employment. (The recent trends are favorable and there’s already a high likelihood of a soft recessionary landing.)
AND THEN the Fed starts lowering rates.
Now China, Russia and Iran will try to disrupt this scenario WITHOUT shooting their own economies in the foot.
A lot could go wrong but if everyone behaves in their economic best interests, then it is plausible.
