that play single handedly changed the momentum for the rest of the game, especially on the defensive side of the ball for us. Basically after the first second we had 4-5 guys doing nothing on the play.

Having that much time to throw, someone going to get open. Didn't get nervous at all. Not to mention that we were playing a qb that was unproven. He missed around 4 open receivers at 5 yds. Why we played with so much cushion most of the game. 3rd and 5 we played 10 yds off, 1st down. Should have played press almost all night and made him throw into tight windows.

I vote that single play as the absolute worst play that I have ever witnessed BV to call - if he actually called that play. And I totally respect everything BV does on the football field. Well - except that one play.
Please do not ever do that again.

That might be the stupidest thing i ever saw in football. It was 3rd and long and those three who aren't rushing are just standing at the line of scrimmage covering air. I mean, if you are going to play 11 coverage, have them back off 10 yards. Not surprising that the defense became soft after that play. Stay aggressive always. This is why Saban is the best coach. He's even harder on his guys when they have a huge lead. How many times clemson could have curb stomped on teams but decided to let up.

Agree completely! Never ever do that shiott again. Completely changed the momentum and let the back in the game with that one play when they were on the ropes taking body shots. Just a normal 3/4 man rush on that down and they likely wouldn't have gotten the completion. Ensuing punt with the way things were clicking would have likely resulted in the knockout blow by the offense.

I was concerned for Brent Venables most of game. Felt like he must have incurred a hit to the head in practice or something----this was his worst defensive game plan, by far. Except for a few plays, he never brought any pressure and when we did it resulted in a sack or tackle for loss (i.e., last offensive play of the game for VT)! Problem is these calls were few and far between which kept them in the game. Dropping 11 in coverage was the dumbest play that I have seen at any level of football.

I was watching Dabo on the sideline and he was giving Brooks and Venables an ear full. We won't see that again.

I've got the utmost respect for Brent Venables, but this might have been the worst defensive call I've ever seen. If you give a college quarterback-- any college quarterback-- 10 seconds to find a receiver, he WILL find a receiver. I can think of a lot of words to describe it, but they're all too insulting. That completely changed the momentum of the game. Every time Clemson tries something "cute" on either offense or defense, it backfires. Argh!

I believe they thought they stole a sign that it was a screen
Dec 4, 2016, 8:25 AM
|
|
And signaled in to the d'line that a screen was coming, which would have made since for Va Tech considering we were sending pressure about every 3rd down. Obviously they misread it. You noticed the front 4 just stood there, they weren't really into coverage, waiting for something that never happened. I doubt the initial play was to drop all 11 into coverage.

That play illustrates exactly why you can't play prevent defense. You have to get to the QB or more often than not you will lose.

My biggest qualm was the lack of coverage on the receiver that made the catch. He practically fair caught that pass. How were we not in better position with the receiver standing still?

The key in coverage for Carter, which I'm sure he had drilled into him, was to not let his man get passed him - you can see this in the wide-angle shot toward the end of the video. At that point, all the receiver has to do is come back to the ball. With Hodge's size vs Carter, Carter was likely more concerned with getting him to the ground than trying to go around him to bat the ball away.
