Expecting our defense to shut down Georgia is unrealistic.

The reality is that Goodwin hasn't shown an ability yet to have a high achieving defense against quality competition.
In 2022, we gave up 45 points to Wake Forest, 20 points to NC State, 28 points to Florida State, 21 points to Syracuse, 35 points to Notre Dame, 31 points to South Carolina, and 31 points to Tennessee. Our best defensive performances against solid competition in 2022 were against Louisville (16 points) and North Carolina (10 points). Neither of these better defensive performances were against elite competition.
In 2023, we gave up 28 points to Duke, 31 to Florida State, 28 to Miami, 24 to NC State, 23 to Notre Dame, 20 to North Carolina, and 35 to Kentucky. Our defense was solid last year, but if we are being honest a lot of the success was because of the inferior competition we played.
This isn't to say that Goodwin isn't capable. And granted, our defense was put in bad positions at times last year, which skew the numbers above. But the reality is that a Goodwin-led defense has not shown the ability to dominate great offenses.
Moreover, as I have mentioned before, we also lost some significant talent from last year's defense. As well know, we did not replace them with anyone from the portal. We are asking some very talented (but very young) players from last year's team to step in and contribute at a high level. Hopefully they will, but it's not a foregone conclusion.
Bottom line: we know our defense can be really good, based on talent, but we haven't shown the ability to be an elite unit since Venables left. We are likely going to need to play very well on defense (and offense) to beat Georgia.

I've seen a lot of predictions here for a low scoring game. I don't see a scenario where Clemson holds Georgia to under 30.

Clemson will likely have one of if not the best defense you will see all season. And typically offenses are not clicking 100% first game of the year. If youre EXPECTING at least 30, youre absolutely insane.

I've seen several references to the 2021 game and UGA'S only TD coming via a pick-6. That was an offense led by JT Daniels. This Georgia offense is considerably better. A few months ago i was at the Gator Bowl and watched Clemson make Devin Leary look like Peyton Manning. I like Carson Beck's chances Saturday.

We had no dbs in that game. We had one starter after transfers and injuries. Maybe know what you’re talking about when you come on another message board.

I hope the team, like the fan base and the whole rest of the country, also expect it. I hope they think Clemson has to score at least 44 to win (which they would if the spread is correct and there are “no imaginable scenarios” where UGA scores less than 30).
But I doubt the team will come out like that. Kirby is wiser than his fan base.

Mostly based on your lack of depth. You have some very good front line players, but there's a pretty big drop off to your 2nd team. And a little less so on your secondary. You don't have a shut down guy like Booth or Wiggins. You have a couple good safety's, but then again not a lot of depth. But more importantly they tend to give away man vs zone pre-snap, which Beck is good at reading. We will see.

Carson Beck will have to carry UGA. Their RB depth is not Good. Injuries and Trevor Etienne's lawbreaking (DWI) will keep him out, unless Kirby gives him a pass. This will deplete their running game. Georgia will need good passing to be successful on offense. If Clemson's defense can sack Beck a few times, could be interesting.

What I recall is a bunch of stuff about DJ lighting them up "write it down." Remember that? Go back and watch that game and watch Kirby run out the clock on the Clemson 10 yard line. That Tiger D was finished and Kirby absolutely could have punched it in had he wanted to. You're fortunate he didn't make that 17-3 and now you can make yourself feel better about the pick 6 being the difference.

I'd like you to intelligently respond to my point about the UGA-Clemson 2021 score, which, behind the big natty win over Bama, has to be the the most common game referenced on TNET.

which, of course, is just speculation since we'll never know.
The biggest difference in the game, other than the interception and 7 sacks, was UGa ability to run the ball better than Clemson did.

Without the pick 6 - UGA definitely wouldn't have started that final possession close to the 50.
There would have been a punt instead of turning it over on downs.

Agree. You could have scored 17 in that game so I think Clemson needs to score at least 18 this time around. Actually I think it's more like 21 but I'll go with your estimate.

You're over estimating your offense and your disappointment will start Saturday. Beck is not a world beater, your wrs are a complete unknown, and Delp is not as good as Bowers. There will be a drop off in talent for yall. Also think if Clemsons OL is playing more physically that your DL depth will be pushed bc yall have hemorrhaged talent off that front 7 for 3 years now and lost multiple players to the portal along the way. I hope Clemson humbles yall in a big way but I doubt even if yall lose you'll find an ounce of humbleness.

Beck finished 7th last year in QBR and he's considered a Heisman candidate this year. I don't know if that makes him a world beater. I do know UGA has the advantage at QB. Lovett and Bell may not be known but they have experience at WR. Clemson seems to be resting their hopes on Moore and Wesco - two guys who have never played a down of college ball. Maybe they will show out Saturday. We'll see.

Your OL is the lynch pin to that offense. I don't see yalls passing attack as scary. If I were Goodwin I'd rather dial it up and make yall pass downfield to win. Heisman candidate is just a popularity contest for QBs on winning teams, I watched Beck. Beck is efficient but I don't see anything special about him.

What's special about Beck is also boring, and most folks don't know enough about good QB play to make the distinction.
From a physical aspect his mechanics and foot work are like a teach tape. You can tell he's put in the time to be just about picture perfect. Couple that with plus arm strength, plus accuracy, and the ability to layer the ball into tight windows, there's a reason he's at the top of most NFL draft boards.
From a mental standpoint, he's great both pre and post snap in diagnosing where to go with the ball. The evidence to support this is his amazing Time to Throw stat. He gets the ball out in 2.39 seconds on average which is the lowest time for all power 5 QBs with 300 or more drop backs according to PFF. You have to know what you're doing and where you're going with the ball to be able to achieve that.
Beck just isn't the guy a casual fan will get excited about. He's not flashy like a Caleb Williams, but he's lethally efficient, and that's a great thing to be when you've got a top tier OL in front of you. Even though there isn't a Brock Bowers on the team this year, Carson will make all of the WRs and TEs look better just by being who he is.

NFL Scouts disagree with your assessment of his strengths

Citing the layered throws and accuracy when pressured:
“The biggest issue for Beck is his accuracy when he's moved off his spot. He has good pocket feel/presence but his accuracy does suffer when he has to move/reset and deliver the ball. The other issue is his passes can get a little flat at times on layer throws. The problem is a flat throw on those types of passes can allow underneath defenders to tip the ball, which could lead to turnovers. I believe both areas can be addressed and improved.“
Keep your day job, NFL GM is not in your future.

Clemson actually has tremendous depth at WR....They rely on Brown, Randall, and Williams...Moore and Wesco will not get significant snaps...
The problem is and will always be the QB...Hes awful...Its literally that simple and I think UGA will eat him alive

If you really think we've had that big of a drop off in talent, you should probably prepare yourself to be surprised come Saturday. No, we're not better at every position, and we've had a drop off at some, but overall this is a very talented squad. No, Delp is not as good as Bowers, but he is still one of the better TEs in the country. We know what our WRs can do. Your OL is a big question mark. Maybe they make that quantum leap, but then again maybe they don't in game 1. We'll see. If Clemson indeed "humbles" us, I'll be here come Monday to give your team their props. If not, will you do likewise?

I'll be here regardless bc this is a Clemson board. You won't if UGA losses. See it every year, some random poster from the opposing team shows up and talks that talk until they lose. The only poster that's consistent and realistic fan of another team is BrettFSU. Yall are just the flavor of the month, hopefully Clemson wins so we can rinse yall out and move on to the next or you'll be here gloating all year.

It's baffling to me that Georgia fans won't acknowledge that you're replacing the whole ### offense. Your 3 projected starters at WR barely eclipsed 1000 receiving yards combined last season and you're replacing Brock Bowers who led the team in targets, receptions, yards, and TDs. I mean Kirby just isn't gonna wave a magic wand and replace that.

What are you even talking about? Whole offense? 4 starting o-linemen return, the QB returns, the receivers have much more experience than the guys Clemson is likely to run out. Delp is no Bowers bit he also has a ton of experience.

More experience at WR? All of our starting WRs will be multi year starters. I mean to be honest outside of of the Oline and QB I think Clemson is a better team at the skill positions. We're bringing back over 2000 yards from scrimmage last season at WR, Jake Briningstool is head over heels better than Delp, and Mafiah is better than any back on your depth chart. Now behind Mafah we are a pile of ####. I mean y'all are out here acting like you're the #### New England Patriots when Bell had 355 yards from scrimmage, Smith had 153 yards from scrimmage, and Delp had 284. I mean Lovett is a 600 yard guy, but you're pretty green everywhere else. Beck is a great system QB at a Georgia, but you're delusional if you don't think Clemson has a chance in this game.

I’m sure you factored in turnovers that either were scores or gave the defense a short field. Surely you did. Right?
We turned the ball over so much last year that I actually kept track of how many turnovers led to points for the other team. It was almost 60 points. Clean that up, and we will be fine.

“This isn't to say that Goodwin isn't capable. And granted, our defense was put in bad positions at times last year, which skew the numbers above. But the reality is that a Goodwin-led defense has not shown the ability to dominate great offenses.”
You said it… and then literally went against the statement.
Giving up almost 60 points off turnovers ≠ “The reality that Goodwin-led defense is unable to dominate offenses”

End of 2023 Season Total Offense:
7. ND - Avg. PPG 39.2 - Scored 23 19. FSU - Avg. PPG 34.6 - Scored 24 in reg; defense only gave up 17 20. UNC - Avg. PPG 34.5 - Scored 20 39. Miami - Avg. PPG 31.5 - Scored 28; defense only gave up 21 43. GT - Avg. PPG 31.1 - Scored 21
That is 5 top 50 offenses averaging a total of 170.9 PPG, and Clemson defense held them to 102 points, which is an average of giving up 20.4 PPG, well below the average PPG for any of these teams. And, to cap it off, we finished the season giving up an avg 21.1 PPG, while giving up almost 60 points off turnovers.
But please, go on about our inferior defense. Laughable.

I never said that our defense was inferior. I said that we did not dominate the better offenses we faced, and I said that we shouldn’t expect our defense to dominate Georgia.
As I stated, our defense was good last year. I wouldn’t consider it great. I am also concerned because we lost some really good players from last year’s defense and I don’t believe the guys replacing them are as good yet.
I hope our defense is lights out, but expecting them to dominate Georgia is based on nothing but hopes and dreams.

Please define “dominate.” Giving up 21.1 PPG over the course of 13 games seems pretty solid considering the offenses we faced. The five best offenses we faced, we held to 10 or more points lower than their season average. What more do you want?

The inept offense was a product of some of those points given up as well. When you put your defense on the field more times than usual and turn the ball over more times than usual leading to easy points, some were defensive TDs that wasn't even on the defense. And those scores you ran were over the past few years, not just one season. More times than not when a team score mores than 28 or so, its due to multiple turnovers and easy points caused by the offense. But we'll see what happens

Judge, you’re an idiot who hates Clemson football. FSUs offense scored 14 points in regulation. Against Kentucky we had no dbs due to injury and transfers. I can’t believe you even mentioned 20 points against NC state. You are a ####### clown.

I obviously don’t hate Clemson football, but you know what I do hate? I hate it when people are so biased about something that they can’t possibly entertain differing views or opinions.
Those people aren’t growing or learning. They are stagnant. And they are missing out on a lot of amazing things in the world because they isolate themselves in their cozy echo chamber.
Step out, I dare you.

to expect our D to shut down Georgia.
They are the #1 team in the country.
When is the last time we shut down an offense as good as theirs?
How many times has Goodwin done it as DC?
Could it happen? Absolutely! I hope it does. But there is zero basis for expecting it to happen.
The reason I make posts like this are because I’ve seen a lot of posts here claiming with certainty that our defense is elite and predicting that we will hold Georgia to a low number of points. That isn’t based on much other than hoping and dreaming.
Again, I hope it happens, but it would be the first time in a long time we have had that kind of success as a defense.

If a Danny Ford team can shut down Jawja and curbstomp one of the best RBs ever to play then this team can do it as well...we have great starters and better backups than Ford had! Smashing a little mouth a few times can make a bulldog whimper...tie a can to his stumpy little tail and make him one dimension! We can fix that puppy!

Even Venables Ds had trouble with good competition. The first two Alabama games were track meets for the offenses. And don't forget LSU. They did dominate Ohio State, Notre Dame and Oklahoma in the semi-finals. You may be absolutely right and GA has had a tendency to just start running the ball in the 2nd half and wear you down.

The thing is, Kirby has shown that he is perfectly content to play conservative against us with a suspect offense. I think there is a very good chance they play conservatively until we give them a reason to fear our offense. That alone could keep the score low.

You know I also remember you last year saying Clemson would have a losing record and that ND would stomp Clemson. You might just need to stay quiet during football season. You BaseballChuck can sit off in a corner and wait until your respective sports are up.

I don't think UGA's as good as they were nine months ago.

Why do you think we are better than we were 9 months ago?
Certain players getting healthy? New coaches? Younger guys growing up?

Judge, you take a lot of #### you don't deserve on here, but you deserve every bit of it for this one.
This is about as low IQ of a take as you can make, supported by point totals that do not even attempt to consider game state, whether points were even allowed by the defense, or the effect of overtime.

Judge Keller® What is considered as shut down? The defense could pitch a shut out and still lose the game due to no offensive production or special team woes. Clemson's issue the last several years is the fact that the team hasn't played complimentary football. The defense must play well, just like the offense has to move the ball, and put points on the board.

Statistically speaking, we were ranked in the 30s out of all CFB teams in terms of how many points we allowed. However, the number of yards allowed, which generally correlates strongly to the number of points allowed, does not tell the same story. In fact, for our team last year we ranked 8th best at yardage allowed.
It tells a story of how complimentary the different phases (offense, defense, and special teams) are in football, where a subpar offense can have an affect on how well a defense performs statistically. And it makes one wonder whether the point you are making would be moot if we had the offensive firepower that we had during Venables era.

I do not think anyone really knows what is going to happen, Kirby probably has the best view of anyone cause he knows what he has, and has the upper hand.
Last year we were #1 at forcing turnovers, top ten in yards allowed, but average at points allowed. Some of this is playing young guys and giving up late TD's, some of it was overtime games, and some of it was the offense leaving us in a bad spot.
I would have to look at red zone defense to get a good take. I also think having another experienced coach like Hobby will help shore things up. Goodwin's defenses also seemed to also adjust well, giving up points early but shutting things down late. There was a lot of good last year, but yeah, the points allowed was a head-scratcher cause it is the only stat that matters.

Nobody knows what will happen. Not UGA or Clemson. Just go out and leave it all on the field.
About half a dozen plays will make the difference in the game.

Won’t shut them down but we’ve had a good defense, just can’t expect them to perfectly overcome the positions they were put in by the offense time and time again.

Venables had lots of NFL talent on his defenses. None from the portal. Goodwin is fine. He has not had what Venables had at his disposal. Want to get back to where we are we need to land some studs on both sides of the ball. We are in the 10-15 range in recruiting and that’s currently where we sit in the polls. I have seen over the years a direct correlation between those 2 numbers. We could get a few out of the portal to plug holes but we do not. Not my program and plenty we know nothing about. I feel the current NIL monies are being used to keep what we have already on the roster, which were young men that wanted to be at Clemson.

Reality is our Defense was very good considering our offense was one of the worst in the nation. If our offense is the same this year then yeas our D will probably be the same as last year. Keeping the ball out of the opponents hands is almost as big a part of defense as the actual defense. Even with our poor offense we were a top 10 defense.
Also don’t forget the turn overs the offense was responsible for that turned into quick points for the other team. Is that the defenses fault? So points per game are not always the best stat to use when judging a defense.
Can we shut down UGA? IMHO yes. As long as our offense can have sustained drives. Even if they end up in FG. Can’t go three and out repeatedly.

Your opinion is no more valuable than anyone else's and it does not matter how many agree or disagree with you because neither team has ever played a game before.
Both teams are brand new unless you count the multiple returners for Clemson on both sides of the ball.

And last time we played them we held them without a t.d. on offense. So there's that. Both offenses only scored 3 points each. Game won on a pick 6.

…go rewatch the game, the D was pretty solid until the 4th quarter when they clearly gave up due to the complete failure of the offense to give them some chance at winning.
