Expansion - The Only Solution

Apr 4, 2023, 6:54 PM

Merge with the Big 12 after OU and TX depart.

The problem? 27 teams.

The solution? Lose ND.

The Question? How to run a 26 team league.

The benefits? Very strong football. The equivalent of SEC and B1G. Overall best in basketball. Overall best in baseball. Overall best in Olympic sports. New mega-TV deal. SEC is surrounded.

I've read all the gibberish out there. There is no perfect, or even good solution for the ACC or Clemson as things currently stand. At best, at some point in time, we join another conference. In the meantime we are in purgatory. This is a permanent solution.

Give me a better, rationale, workable solution. None of this let's join the SEC/B1G pipedream BS.

Why Okie over the two Kansas schools? They pounded the Cowboys this year. Strengthen, don't weaken, the conference.

I say the h311 with losing OK St and Texas Tech to the SEC. It's heading to 3 Super Conferences so go for a 24 team Conference out of the gate. Add Utah, keep all the future BIG 12 schools (except BYU) and dump BC and Syracuse.

East Divisions

East A

Miami
GT
Clemson
NC St
Wake
UCF

East B

FSU
UNC
VT
UVA
Cincinnati
Duke

West Divisions

West A

Pitt
Louisville
WV
Iowa St
Kansas
Kansas St

West B

TCU
Baylor
OK St
Texas Tech
Utah
Houston

Play your 5 division games, 3 Non-Conference games, 3 Conference cross divisional games, East/West A & B Championship, and Conference Championship for a total of 13 games before CFP. To be adjusted as the number of CFP games grows.

Big 12 sounds like the Minor Leagues & untaken Road Trips

I respectfully disagree. Clemson's solution at this time is to stay alert and do nothing. Clemson Football is the only sport that is bankable, and the last two years of average play have slightly dimmed expansion viability. But my take is Riley, CK2, and improved offensive & defensive play will put Clemson back in the spotlight in 2023-24. Enjoy and ride the bounce Tigers!

Merge with CUSA and make Conference Super Suck.
The boat has sailed on ACC and football. We need to leave ACC now.

ACC screwed the pooch trying to add basketball schools. You aren’t going to get football money even if you do have a conference full of historically good to great hard wood teams.

This is just dumb. 26 team conference? Pointless.

Maybe the only way to get the $’s needed to compete. 20 plus avg teams will get more than 16 avg teams and there is not a plethora of great teams to add to what we currently have in the ACC to move the needle that much imo if 16 is the goal.

Sheer number of teams does not increase TV revenue. It is about market diversification and viewer interest.

Re: Expansion - The Only Solution

Apr 4, 2023, 7:52 PM

Oh I understand that but with more teams I would doubt they would all be in the same tv market.

We currently have nothing out west past Louisville. Get a few or join some teams out that way and it has to increase the tv market.

At the end of the day you are just getting more avg teams but increasing the number of tv sets.

You aren't getting a mega TV contract with that scenario.

Its not a pipedream....Dabo....

has TOLD you where this is going...two conferences and then maybe one. Wait till WASH and ORE fall to the B1G. You think its going to stop expansion then???? You think the SEC is going to stand pat as the B1G continues to grow?

Listen to your coach.....he can ramble a bit too much at times, overhyping kids a bit prematurely...but he is usually spot on. He is 100% right when it comes to expansion.

The most realistic scenario is four 16-team conferences. I think that is very likely where this is headed.

I hope it does turn out that way but with Clemson out of the ACC. Not sure what teams would help us financially with what we currently have.

Clemson
FSU
Miami
Va Tech
West Va
Pitt
NC State
UNC
Louisville

Separate these 8 + 1 out in their own football division with that share of the media package alongside, then expand below for football, our own in-house Group of 5 of Ga Tech, UVA, Wake, Duke, BC, and Syracuse plus 3 more that can contribute to basketball and other sports and contribute accordingly in the mid-major real in football. Think UConn, USF, Memphis maybe (a little further west than ideal), Temple - that kind of add.

That's more in line with Dabo's statements on this - not that there will be just two leagues or so but that the upper football level will be smaller that what we're pushing now rather than expanded. With what we have in the ACC now we could start that process within an existing conference and set the pace.

We don't want a bunch of cross-country travel to nowheresville for all of our sports. Keep it close and comfortable. Plenty of great football on the east coast.

It doesn't solve anything unless both sides cut their dead

Apr 5, 2023, 2:28 PM

weight. We have too many schools not contributing enough to revenue in the ACC. The problem with the B12 is thats hard to do, they have a lot of good schools but no great schools once TX and OU are gone.

But there is some meat on the bone. OK St, TCU, Kansas, some others - we could make something work with a total of 16 to 18 schools. Contractually probably impossible but its nice to ponder.
