Spring practice insider: Thursday morning news and notes
Despite being chock full of veterans, there will be plenty of competition during Clemson’s 15 spring practice. They return 21 seniors and 17 starters off a squad that made it to the College Football Playoff last year, but head coach Dabo Swinney said there will be enough competition to go around at every position. Maybe I'm nitpicking, but as I remember the rhetoric back when DW4 started his Jr year, there was no talk of competition for starting QB. Now there is after KB put in a good job last year albeit poor performance against the Tide. This sounds like acknowledgement Dabo senses our O needs to be more consistent passing. Most of the posts on TNET I've read scream for this improvement.
If so, it'll be interesting how the competition plays out to the Spring game.

Didn’t have the depth of talent behind DW that we do now. Also, let’s face it, DW was a one of a kind talent and leader.

My take is that Dabo recognizes the problems in the passing game, but sees this as being on the receivers, not the QB. We lost a LOT more than DW4 last year.
The only reason there is ANY question about KB2 is because there is so much talent behind him. Even so, we're still talking about a talented but inconsistent backup, a redshirt, and a kid who should still be in high school. If any of them want to start, they're going to have to PROVE they can do better.

I'd be questioning him as a QB no matter who was behind him. Just didn't see the consistent reads required for a QB on a top 4 team.

KB is a "good" college QB. Not a great one like DW4. imo the other talent we have behind do have the potential to be great ones. what is it they call that - the ceiling is higher. KB's pretty much hit his ceiling and theirs nothing wrong with it. We were very blessed last year to have the best defense in cfb or we'd have been just an above average team and gone to a nice bowl, not the playoffs.
I disagree in the that they will all get the same opportunity. Don't have time to give all of them the same time with the ones. I really really hope that TL starts - because if he did start he'd have to be on or above DW4 territory.

Therein is the million dollar issue ...

In Dabo's words, KB will have to "prove himself to be the best QB every day". That would require the most QB talent and vertical passing ability which KB cannot provide. With full respect to Coach Swinney, KB cannot outpass and outplay HJ and TL on any day much less every day. The NFL will second that assessment. Hopefully, HJ will start the season and TL will get a lot of snaps.

Rushing TDs are still good for 6 points, which is what is keeping KB2 in this. He can't outpass TL or HJ, but he can run circles around them. He runs the zone read as well as anyone. This worked well with our strategy of running the ball, eating the clock, and letting the defense win the game.
A lot of our struggles in the passing game were on the WRs. If they don't step up, it's not going to matter how good an arm the QB has.

Since we haven't seen TL or HJ really run the read option enough you can't say with 100% certainty that KB would run circles around them.
You also lost me with him running the zone read as well as anyone. One of his weaknesses at times this year was making the wrong read and handing off with a lineman crashing down or keeping the ball when they stayed home.

Some of those "bad reads" were designed plays and some were plays where he had no good option, especially in the Alabama game.
HJ is a pocket passer. He can scramble, but he's not the power runner KB is. HJ struggled to read defenses last year (This is normal for a true freshman. DW4 was an unusually fast learner.), but certainly has the talent to win the job.
TL has looked really good–against high school defenses.

How would the bad reads be designed plays? You're suggesting we had a fake read option? Why not just have the read option as on the "bad designed read option" plays would've worked with the opposite option taken.
I'm certainly not including the Alabama game in any of this, that was a bad game for all levels of our offense, play calling to blocking and everything in between.

don't think you can say HJ struggled in the RO. He didn't play enough snaps to know that and the snaps he had was usually with a mixed up lineup. He possibly had one bad read on the scar endzone pass that he shouldn't have thrown... possibly. Don't know how much autonomy he had to audible etc like DW. bottom line, don't think anyone other than coaches at practice can say "he struggled".

To win a natl championship, you need a multi-dimensional QB

DW could pass and run. He read the D 85% correctly. KB struggles on the deep pass and reads the D maybe 75% correctly. And yes, the receivers are a key part of the equation. Williams bailed DW out a lot, so it gave us margin of error. Last year, we missed that.
So this year, if Tee steps in and becomes the Williams/Nuke go to guy and TL or HJ or Brice become the best D reading QB PLUS can run effectively, then that is who wins.
If KB improves upon D reads and can pass better, the he wins the job.
It really is that simple (not!).... ??

KB is NOT..repeat...NOT playing QB in the NFL. FULL STOP.
Does that mean he can't win a Natty? No. See Tim Tebow. But I don't think KB is talented as Tebow was. And Tebow didn't exactly have a roster of 4 and 5 stars riding the pine behind him. That is not the case here at Clemson. We now have 1, possibly 2 prototypical NFL QB's behind KB.
Honestly, the best move for KB and Clemson would be for him to convert to a TE. He'd need to add 20lbs, but could possibly do it if he started today.

I def agree with Feaster slimming down alil bit. I thought last year 222 lbs was alil to heavy for him. At 215 he'll be able to utilize his speed more and still have some power behind it. We'll have the best Duo at RB in the league this year IMO.

The coots could be and will never be. Your trolling won’t change that. You know it. I know it. Dabo is one of the top coaches in CFB and Clemson is one of the top programs because of him. Keep trolling if it makes you feel better. You must think it gives you some kind of moral victory or something. Dabo and Clemson will keep winning real championships with real trophies.

That's my only concern, not letting the Dline we got coming back go to waste. It's honestly National Title or bust this year. It's just picking the right guy to lead the way. Everything else is in place.

If KB is the starter in September, maybe the QB talent we have on the shelf isn't as good or talented as we believed they are. Personally, I want us to have a QB that is talented enough to have a chance to one day play in the NFL as a QB like DW4 has done. From what we have seen to now, I just don't see KB ever playing QB in the NFL. I'm sure this will pisss some off, but I believe that I'm being honest, so flame away!!!
