Elon hits mark again

Jun 20, 2022, 1:22 PM

Questions if tiktok or social media is destroying civilization. Fair question.

I'll actually thumb this up because I've personally thought so for awhile. I took myself off all social media about 5-6 years ago because I thought social media was toxic then and we've only gotten more polarized since.

Interestingly, Silicon Valley agrees with this notion. None of the Big Tech execs will let their own kids on social media either...mostly due, apparently, to their own internal studies that show a massively deleterious effect in both self-worth and cognitive function and concentration in teenagers and young adults. Which puts them on a par with Big Tobacco execs who knew durn well cigarettes caused cancer and Big Oil execs who have continued to push their product while attempting to suppress a switchover to renewables...even despite their own internal climate-change studies showing what their product does to the world.

I think at some point successful civilizations are going to turn The Machine off.

I've made the statement in here many times over the years

Jun 20, 2022, 1:48 PM

That I can't find anything overall positive about Facebook, and was immediately met with "Its easy to keep my parents up to date with what my kids are doing", or something like "I connect with old friends", or some other weak redirection as to why social media is somehow a positive thing.

IOW..Facebook and the rest of social media isn't going anywhere, and it will never be regulated to the extent it probably should be. If anything, it will become worse..not better.

I remember when Facebook first came out (and required one of a group of selected colleges email address to sign up/login), and I never really understood the reason for the platform. Almost 20 years later, and I still don't get it.

I'm not on social media either

I'd rather discuss with you guys than people I know. I have no desire to fight with friends and family about social issues or religion or politics.

No question any longer.

Social media is an incredible platform for creativity and information sharing, but these benefits are vastly outweighed by the damage it causes socially and politically.

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.

I don't have tik tok, but I see a lot of videos from links or whatever. Entertaining!

My kids have it, and one has had to have a self-intervention to quit looking at it so much.

Social media is a huge problem.

Jun 21, 2022, 2:52 PM

I blame it for a significant portion of the issues that we see today, such as poor communication, a lack of respect for others, an inability to entertain opposing viewpoints, and violence.

"Social Media" is a facade... it's actually the largest

data mining and collection operation that has ever existed. By and large, "social media" has become an online sewer and other than the TigerNet boards, I am a non-participant.

Yep & being on TigerNet is an iffy social medium too!

Saying, one can get shouted down for any little reason with uncountable TD's which will ruin your reputation & your % rating.

LOL~
