dawn, never realizing, or maybe actually realizing, it would be the last one they would ever see. For those from the United States, they were about to lay down their lives for a land far, far away from their homes and families. But, they did not shirk the responsibility. They fought and died on those foreign beaches, for the families of those who were enslaved by Axis Tyranny already, to restore THEIR freedom, and save THEIR lives, and to prevent the further spread of the horror.

They would come to be known as The Greatest Generation. Now, eighty years later, there are literally only handfuls of them left of the thousands that stormed the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944. They were lambs to the slaughter of the German machine gun pillboxes and outboard machine gun nests of Hitler's Atlantic Wall. But, they fought on, because they had to. Failure, although very possible, was not an option anyone on those beaches was prepared to accept.

World War II was not won that day. It would take another hard fought 11 months, and a lot more lives lost, before Hitler's war machine was brought to its knees. But make no mistake about it. Had the invasion begun on June 6, 1944 not been successful, we would be living in a far, far different, far, far worse world today. The soldiers storming the beaches in 1944 knew that. That is why, although they died violently, those who did rest in peace. most overlooking those same beaches from the Allied Cemeteries in Normandy, France. The Greatest Generation. You will never get an argument from me about that. I salute them, eternally. SALUTE.

all those European families who lost THEIR loved ones, including the unspeakable horror of the Holocaust. How many more lives would have been snuffed out by the Nazi genocide if not for the actions begun on D-Day? Your family will never know what your Uncle could have accomplished in the rest of his life. Many of those families do not have ANY surviving members, whole generations wiped from the face of the earth. There is literally no one left to accomplish anything. Those who are trying to censure Israel today for "overreaction" to threats to their existence would do well to remember what happened the last time they turned the other cheek.

Every time I think about those young men, mostly the age my grandson is now, it brings tears to my eyes. To call them the greatest generation is an understatement. God bless them and their families and may God continue to bless this country.

Definitely not suckers. Heroes! I went with my Grandfather(RIP), who fought at the very end of WWII. We went to Normandy to his brothers grave who died at Omaha, my great uncle obviously. It was pretty heavy. My Grandmother looked at all of those graves and said, "Look at all of those Mother's sons." They were very emotional. There are iver 9,000 US soldiers buried at Normandy. They left home, said goodbye to everyone, and never saw the USA again. In this case, it truly was for our freedom. Heroes!

As I heard today on TV, the world was saved by teenagers. That is what the majority of the armed forces were made of, teenagers. What a fine generation of American citizens they were. We have fallen so far from this patriotism.

So many of them lied about their age to go fight. 16 year olds went to fight and die for their country and their world.

Greatest Generation doesn't do it justice.

Also, the folks back home deserve a lot of credit. They all came together and gave the troops everything need to whipe the Germans and Japs. What a war effort. I was 11-15 during the war. I remember how patriotic everyone was.

I’ve read just about everything there is about D Day and I’ve always felt they weren’t done right. The bombings they were promised didn’t happen and they expected craters from bombings on the beaches which they could find cover and they weren’t there. They were sitting ducks and so many needlessly died from uncontested German machine guns and mortars. I blame Eisenhower and think he was highly overrated and later a bad president.
Sure, we won eventually but it could have been done much better

Great post! I didn’t have family that died during the invasion but the stories and courage will always swell the patriotism up inside. Thanks to those young men who fought regardless of fear! God bless them, their families, and those they fought for!
