The Klubnik Effect

Dec 5, 2022, 8:23 AM

After he entered the game, UNC failed to enter the end zone the rest of the evening.

The kid not only energized the offense with his energy and level of play. He energized the entire team - offense, defense, and even special teams. You could see it on the TV and hear it from the crowd there.

I think it also had the opposite effect on the Heels - they knew they had a lot more to contend with now that Cade was in the game and I think it threw their game plan as well as their mindset. The first two Clemson drives, UNC seriously felt like they had a great chance for the W (and they did). But once Cade came in and led that first drive - all expectations changed.

"Crap - Clemson is back!" - UNC team and fans
"Yes! Clemson is back!" - Clemson team and fans

one of best parts to me when Cade had bad where threw behind receiver dude stopped on dime to go back get the completion. When playoffs go to 12 teams it fits into Cade (other Texas QBs too) season 10 games but have to win 6 playoff games to win state

Dec 5, 2022, 8:30 AM

they knew how to defend DJ. Knew what rattled him and how to throw him off.

They had to adjust to Cade.

He's hard to rattle...in his last state yhey arranged the whole defense to shut him down...worked a little in the 1st half...corrections at the half...he came out and blew them away...he will be another Drew Brees or Patric Mahomes with extra size and talent!

Dude, chill out. Cade's great and I've been preaching for him since he was in high school. But a bigger, more talented Pat Mahomes or Brees? Get a grip.

dramatic of a difference in a football game or football team. He had UNC on their heels from the first play. It was immediate, dramatic, and undeniable.

I love DJ - this is in no way a swipe at him. I think he set a great example as a leader and a human being, and I wish him well. But, the difference when Cade came in ... whew!

Our team went from a running QB who could heave and hope the ball to an actual passing QB (who could also run). I think it was UNC that time as well.

Dec 5, 2022, 8:53 AM

Cade was great and it was a lot of fun to watch a competent Clemson offense again, but the Defensive turnaround had much more to do with our defensive play caller getting his head free from somewhere below his waist. We came out in a 3-4 dropping 8 in coverage on the first drive and Maye sliced it up like he did in all of the other games this season in which that defense was employed. He77 Bresee was only in on 2 plays on that drive and it was in goal line defense. For the rest of the game we played in mostly 4-3 and brought the type of exotic pressures that the last two teams who defeated the holes used to rattle Maye. That first drive was almost as if our defensive staff had not seen the holes lose to GT or NCSU.

and it effects both sides of the ball. When the defense knows the offense can't score, they play tight because they know they can't make a mistake. And when a team plays like they can't make a mistake, they make mistakes.

It was clear that a burden had been lifted from the defense’s shoulder. A DJ burden.

Dec 5, 2022, 9:05 AM [ in reply to Eh not so much ]

You must not have watched the UNC-NCSU game that I did. I remember watching State play a lot of 3 man front and cover with 8. They were very effective for the most part so I figured that is what Clemson would try.

I wasn't surprised when we came out in that look, but as you stated, it was not effective as the Heels took it straight down the field on their first drive. Obviously, they had prepared for that defense since they had struggled with it in previous games.

Credit to our DC for switching things up after that and being more aggressive with the pass rush!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I saw NCSU with 3 down lineman but I recall

Dec 5, 2022, 9:31 AM

Them bringing pressure with the back 8. The defense we were in reminded me of the defense we played against VT in the ACCCG in ‘16. We weren’t even trying to pressure the QB we were trying to keep him in the pocket and eliminate the QB run. Mack himself told us how to defend his offense in the days leading up to the game. He said a few times that no one had been able to stop Maye if he had enough time. That’s what was startling to me; it seemed like we were playing into their hands. The weakest part of their whole team is their OL and by only rushing 3 we weren’t taking advantage of that.

Yes. Of course it breathed new life into the entire team.

The coaches talk all the time about “complimentary football”.

Well that was on display.

When the defense knew the offense was playing to win, they immediately picked up their game as well.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When you have someone that can actually run the offense

Dec 5, 2022, 8:58 AM

it makes everyone on the team look better.

The Defense isn't out there with their backs against the wall all night.

The RB gets the handoff when the DE keeps contain, so he doesn't get blown up at the LOS all night.

The WRs get the ball after they get open and the DB doesn't have time to close the gap.

The OL looks better because:
- The QB gets rid of the ball quickly.
- The QB actually completes quick passes, reads blitzes, etc, making the defense back off.
- The QB doesn't stand like a statue and moves with pressure
- The QB makes the right pre-snap reads
- you see where this is going

It felt like FREEDOM when Cade entered the game! This offense has been brutal to watch....even in Wins.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

After every win, I kept asking myself “What just happened”?

Dec 5, 2022, 9:48 AM

I couldn’t figure out if the win was just dumb luck, or if Clemson really deserved it.

In BoA Saturday night, the crowd of people that I was sitting with, it was so dang fun I couldn’t get enough of it!

When Wiggins ran back that pick-6, I thought the stands were going to collapse.

It was beyond ELECTRIC!! That place was ROCKING!

Having said this, my heart goes out to DJ because he is a standup Clemson man, and I respect what he tried to do for the Clemson football program. And, I do believe he did all that he was capable of doing.

This is Cade’s team now. I continue to pull for DJ’s success, wherever he ends up, even if he stays at Clemson.

Dec 5, 2022, 9:25 AM

that first pass 2 yards short of the receiver. Even the receiver's shoulders slumped - like a "here we go again". The excitement was palpable when Cade came in.

Keep in mind that any team with a pulse can move the ball on UNC (and we now had a pulse).

I been saying all year how it effects the whole mentality of the team. Nate Wiggins even said it after the game. Guys give it alil more and play with more confidence when they know they have a leader at the QB position that can get the job done. This will always be known as the "What IF" year had Dabo pulled the plug on DJ sooner (especially after Cuse). I can almost guarantee we'd be playing UGA in the playoffs had he made that commitment to Cade sooner. It is what it is, all we can do is put all the right pieces in place to start next year and make another run.

Dec 5, 2022, 10:24 AM

If Cade would have started 2nd half against Roosters won be one loss Conference Champion probably taking Ohio State out of playoffs. Though that might have taken TCU out when both would deserve in. ND game not sure if Cade could have one that game if he came in early cause one drive one int he was pulled on what looked like bad run route. They pulled him and then DJ pick 6 then stayed in. The only regret I have from that game was that Dabo didn't give Cade one more series after int. He has always done that with starting QBs do. Watching that game without special teams and pick 6 TDs. Was 7 point game that could have gone either way. If they switched QBs after Cuse be undefeated playing Michigan with Frogs playing Dawgs

Good point regarding the defense.
It seemed the defense picked up their game after Cade came in, and it makes sense.
I have to think the defense was getting demotivated after they would make a stop, and see the offense go out onto the field and have a three and out. After a while of the defense must be thinking, “ why even bother trying if the offense can’t score?”.

His biggest help to defense was first downs. Even some of Clemson's best defense got stretched games when Tiger offenses sometime make several 3 and out in a row.

My nephew, a diehard Tarheel fan, said as soon as he saw Klubnik come in, that they (UNC) had no chance. When a fan of an opposing team knows that your QB2 is worlds better than your QB1, and your HFC can't see it ... I have no words.

Re: The Klubnik Effect

Dec 5, 2022, 10:30 AM

QB3 was better than QB1 too. DJ just lost his confidence last year and hasn't kept it this season. Still awesome man but on field not really there last 2 season. Plus last year started play eventual national champion only losing on pick 6. 10-3 season could have been worse without defense winning couple close ones.
