Dumb football players?

Oct 16, 2012, 11:14 AM

I know there are a lot of people who think our offensive and defensive schemes are too complicated - that our players just can't understand them.

But where do the coaches draw the line? If you make things too simple then we may not be able to compete against other teams. I know we talk all the time about a player's physical skills but isn't the mental game just as important?

It seems to me before we criticize the coaches we need to ask if some of our players just don't have it upstairs. Our best players seem to understand things just fine.

Maybe it's just inexperience but it seems like some of our veteran players on defense, for example, just don't understand what they should know by now.

If Clowney can pick up on a defensive scheme ANYBODY is capable.

Simple scheme for him

On the line, rush the guy with the ball.

On the second level, wait a second to see who has the ball, rush him

In all fairness, there may not be much scheme required of

Clowney. Things will get more difficult for him in the NFL. But, from what I have seen of him, he basically has 1 assignment - go get the football or swat down passes. I would be curious to know the reason he was off the field so much against LSU.

They were running right at him effectively.

replaced him with a guy who is a lot more physical." If there is a question about his physicality, does that cause concern for NFL scouts?

Size vs. Speed. Depends on the needs/application.***

Are we sure players are not using this scheme thing as a excuse for poor play? Every week it seems we play against a different type of offense. In 2010 we had a defense rated at #13 in the country. They all played under Steel and they where experienced. Dabo stopped recruting in 2009 and now we're short on juniors. Scheming against these different offenses will take above average schemes and experienced players.

there is a differnce in pure atheletes and pure football
