Probably gonna get landblasted for this...

Jan 4, 2015, 6:51 PM

But honestly, I'm not really a guy who gets all excited about "legacy" recruits. The fact of the matter is, very rarely are these guy 4 and 5 star kids. Receuits like the Davis twins and the Trapp kid are probably barely even 3 stars, let alone luckily if major recruiting services recognize they exist. Now, before you go destroying me or yelling "tell me coot" all in my face, know that I'm fully aware that sometimes you need to honor tradition because it's important to recognize those who've done great things for your program over the year. However, practically speaking, each scholarship we offer to a "legacy" who may never rise above average talent is one less scholarship we have to offer to a legit 4/5 star kid who could launch us to the next level in terms of national title contention. If we're honest with ourselves I think true fans of this football program are at the point where we want to be relevant in the national titles conversation year end and year out. We're right at the door of elite greatness. The way you busy through that door is to reek in legit top 5 classes every year. In my honest opinion, we can't do that if we continue this habit of bringing in legacies simply for the sake of making legacy families and alumni boosters happy. Thoughts? Anyone with me on this?

I agree 100% with you. I just don't understand why we do this.

Re: Probably gonna get landblasted for this...

Jan 4, 2015, 6:54 PM

I know they accept grayshirts, but doesn't that mean eventually they are given a scholarship? If so, we should not be doing this.

You have none in cootlumbia***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So are you saying Cole Stoudt Jr. will

Jan 4, 2015, 6:54 PM

not be welcome here when the time comes? :)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If a legit player, we'd take him & J Spiller Jr & Sammy Jr

Jan 4, 2015, 7:10 PM

and Sammy Watkins III and Sammy Watkins IV
and Deshaun Watson Jr and III and IV.

How come The Fridge is not procreating?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cole Stoudt Jr could be a 5 star QB.

Jan 4, 2015, 9:53 PM [ in reply to So are you saying Cole Stoudt Jr. will ]

So I hope we give him a shot when the time comes.

Teams need roster filler, Legacy kids are less likely to transfer

Jan 4, 2015, 6:57 PM

The Davis twins and Trapp will be good for practice depth and could develop into something. Its better to have players who wanna be there and practice hard, than a 3 or 4 star whose is a pissed because he isn't good enough to play. This is good for the program in terms of depth when these players are juniors and seniors and practice depth early in their careers

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree somewhat

Jan 4, 2015, 6:59 PM

I dont Dabo is tying to destroy the program by doing this. Yeah it would of been better to get a couple of 4 or 5 star guys instead of the davis twins but you never know, they may th out to be good. From everything i read, Trapp is a good athlete who would of got more offers if he was a little bit taller. I heard he did really well in the shrine bowl against taller receivers

TNET logic flaw:

Jan 4, 2015, 7:00 PM

I am sure that if we had multiple 4* and 5* players lined up to come in - the scholly would go their way. We are just fine the way we are.

do you think he will be that size in 2 years. and did you hear he was the best cover corner at the shrine bowl. guessing not. my guess is you are one of those guys that think they know more about recruiting than the guys that have put together a top 5 class.

Yeah he went from 5'9 to 5'7 in last 2 articles. I guess Furman and PC can't be wrong.

...and this is the point...

Jan 4, 2015, 7:07 PM [ in reply to TNET logic flaw: ]

Well said Terrier....

We heard similar outcries over the Greenlee and Davs Twins, but I can assure you that we did not turn away a single 4 or 5 star recruit because "sorry, we're full".

Far as I remember most legacy are preferred walk-ons or gray shirts. No scholarship involve.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Probably gonna get landblasted for this...

Jan 4, 2015, 7:08 PM

My understanding of a grey shirt is say you are a 2015 recruit you accept the grey shirt offer and sit out this year then come in next year with the EE guys and get a scholarship

Re: Probably gonna get landblasted for this...

Jan 4, 2015, 7:04 PM

I agree with the OP. This is wrong. We are already at a disadvantage against the SEC schools because we don't oversign and cut. Now we have four schollies tied up in kids who have little chance of ever contributing. No one can say they would have been recruited if Dabo wasn't close with their families. There is a reason the NCAA takes schollies as punishment - it hurts.

Jan 4, 2015, 7:09 PM

If I am not mistaken the names you mentioned are gray shirt players. That means at this time they are not on any football scholarship and are not counted towards the scholarship numbers

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Probably gonna get landblasted for this...

Jan 4, 2015, 7:12 PM

Greyshirt just means they enroll the following January instead of August. Once they enroll, they count towards the 85 scholly limit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

they are on scholarship next year and get one this year

Jan 4, 2015, 7:15 PM [ in reply to Re: Probably gonna get landblasted for this... ]

if somebody quits. They are a guarantee preferred walk-on

Didn't we just send a legacy recruit to gray shirt helll?

Jan 4, 2015, 7:10 PM

Dabo is pretty good at picking talent and leaving the bad kids for the SEC.

Don't CU employee's kids get discounts

Jan 4, 2015, 9:49 PM

on tuition? In that case the Davis boys, Greenleeband Trapp are good to go. Throw in a little academic $ and you're getting great practice guys that are a step up from your average walk on. Dabo's got this. No worries.

With these legacy kids (for the most part), the ego/bad attitude stuff isn't really an issue. You know they'll come in and work hard.

Re: Probably gonna get landblasted for this...

Jan 4, 2015, 10:57 PM

I almost want to agree but at this point I'm trusting the judgement of the coaches. The culture that Dabo has built at Clemson is nothing short of amazing.

On another note is it possible to fix spell check on this site so that it doesn't suggest that I misspelled Dabo?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Probably gonna get landblasted for this...

Jan 5, 2015, 12:45 AM

I partially agree with you...legacies for the sake of legacies aren't usually a good idea (ie Davis twins). Trapp is pretty #### solid though. He's short but he's very good in coverage. I think we could do a lot worse as a backup or nickel guy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's a culture thing, and I support it...

Re: Probably gonna get landblasted for this...

Jan 5, 2015, 11:35 PM

You're right. Our recruiting process sucks. Dabo and staff have proven time and again they don't know what they're doing. I can't believe they don't understand the process as well as you do. Fire Dabo and Jeff Scott too as recruiting coordinator. If guys like you were in charge the world would finally respect Clemson!!!
