Does ACC have any REALISTIC options for expansion other then ND & UConn?

I think the boat has sailed with WV. Why would WV leave Big12 now? Better TV deal, now has Cincinnati in close proximity and top to bottom appears to be a more competitive football & Basketball conference.

NO STANFORD & CAL are not realistic options dire to geography. Also do we want another BC?

ND is not a realistic option. There is no guaranteed increase in the contract for new teams like they have in the B12 so any team who wants in (UConn or the PAC 12 scraps) would end up reducing the per team payout.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

B12 contract doesn’t increase avg payouts . ACC

Aug 5, 2023, 12:21 PM

contract allows for an increase but there are no teams above the ACC average except ND. And when I say no teams, that’s inclusive of any B12 schools.

Yes. The realistic option...

8

Aug 5, 2023, 7:38 AM

.... is for the ACC to work with the SEC, B1G, Big 12 and AAC with the intention of dissolving the conference and getting the best deal possible for the 14 schools to be absorbed into one of those 4 conferences.

Expanding the conference is a pipe dream. Saving the conference as a conference who can compete with the SEC and B1G is an even bigger pipe dream.

Getting the best possible lifeboat for each university when the ship sinks is the reasonable action to take.

Since college football has been deemed a business

with players being paid and considered employees by many, why not an antitrust suit against the big boys acquiring other businesses to form unfair monopolies? (Tongue-in-cheek for those with legal education).

But the leaders will not take the high road as they would lose their seat at the table.

In a perfect world they would split off football as a separate entity to be run like the NFL. Equal payouts and a playoff. Divisions based on geography and balanced for strength of teams. One commissioner who can actually enforce rules. Then the other sports could play a reasonable schedule based on geography.

I remember not so long ago that it was being posted on how the big 12 was going to dissolve. My how things have changed. What used to be p5 is now going to be the p3. Total incompetent on how asleep at the wheel the acc was. It's ashamed we weren't one of the big players.

No one wanted the ACC to succeed as much as I did, but it was hampered by subpar football outside of one or two schools. The ACC leadership was very backward thinking when it thought basketball was important. It is not. In a good year ACC football as a whole was barely competitive and everyone knows that. Honestly some of the worst football played in the country was played in the ACC.

Navy.
They are around #39 or 40 in TV viewership on an annual basis, about the same slot as South Carolina with much less media promotion.
I think the addition of Navy and the promise they could keep their longstanding game with Notre Dame would help add both to the conference, plus there is a lot of academic prestige.

Let's clarify. The Big 12 does not have a better TV deal.

The ACC doesn’t care about being more competitive and evolving in the football world. We need to jump ship asap

the ACC conference going forward. The ACC is brain dead and being kept alive by a life support machine called ESPN. And, it's clear THEY even want to pull the plug and have the conference die.

Looking back, if ESPN could take back creation of The Longhorn Network, and The ACC Network, they would do it in a heartbeat. They were trying to mimic the NBC success with Notre Dame in the Longhorn Network. They were trying to duplicate their OWN success with the SEC Network by creating the ACC Network. But, the product on the field, in neither case, lived up to anywhere near hopes or expectations. Anyone who has even watched the ACC Network knows that ESPN never really put any first class effort into it anyway. They delayed it for so long, before finally launching it under duress, it was clear they didn't want it.

The one thing that DOESN'T wash out of this whole scenario is the SEC's seeming indifference to the whole thing. They can carp all they want about not needing or wanting Clemson or FSU in their league. The undeniable fact, for anyone who watches college football, is that FSU and Clemson are major brands. And, the TV viewing numbers back that up. The BIG seems to realize this, even if the SEC does not. If the GOR can be broken, the BIG would extend FSU and Clemson invites today. Now, there are even rumblings of third party financiers getting involved, who may infuse enough coin to pay the way out regardless. Very, very strange and unsettling times ahead for college football. Dabo may well have been Nostrildammdus when he said, "Just wait until NEXT week".

The ACC really messed up when The Big lost Texas and Oklahoma

Aug 5, 2023, 11:41 AM

They should have swooped in and taken TCU, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, west Va and any combination of 2 of these to get to 20 UCF(largest school in the country), Houston, Baylor, Texas Tech, Cincinnati, Kansas (basketball ugh)

The could have crippled the Big 12 and could have argued as good as Big 10 football as second best league for TV especially new Texas markets and good football programs.

Something like wasn't done even before the time you mentioned because Tobacco Road couldn't risk losing control of the Conference.

Better TV deal? What are you talking about? The ACC brought home more money last year than the Big 12 schools are getting in their new contract which will run through 2031.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Contract first, then expand. That's the only path forward I

Aug 5, 2023, 12:10 PM

see that puts us, Clemson, in greater control of our own destiny and bridges the revenue gap, maybe not completely, but much closer.

Clemson
FSU
Miami
Va Tech
NC State
UNC
Louisville
Pitt

These 8 vote to disband the ACC altogether with an agreement in place prior to form a new league together - The Big Atlantic.

Other ACC programs could be invited in to participate alongside with a separate football division, and thus separate media payouts.

Ga Tech
Wake
Duke
BC
Syracuse
UVA

West VA would be a natural add to the top division, and a media deal involving those programs would far outpace the Big XII. The Big XII's problem today and going forward is that they have no Alpha programs leading the national charge. The ACC has 3 of those in us, FSU, and Miami, even if they don't always play like it.

Oklahoma State? Baylor? Colorado? Not the same national sizzle up top. That's a problem for media ROI.

After expanding up top with West VA, we then expand on the bottom with a UConn, Temple, Memphis, or Navy even, to even the divisions out and add new markets overall.

This fits Dabo's concept of the football powers simply having their own league together, while also tying in and keeping geographic harmony with all other sports.

Notre Dame should stay Independent in football IMO. It's cool having a team play a national schedule like they do, even though the B1G is kind of heading in that direction with 4 time zones in play now.

Go Tigers.

UCONN was in talks with Big 12, not sure where that stands now?
