I feel terrible for DJ. Watching your loved ones go through a divorce is awful at any age.
I can’t imagine being in his position and dealing with that too
Prayers’s for the U family ..

You know it has to be pulling at him emotionally, especially since DJ is probably the bread winner in the family now with the NIL contracts. Just hope either of the parents are trying to divide the family.

His dad worked in security. Not sure if he’s retired but I think they’re ok.

why is it such a big deal his parents got divorced? suck it up it happens. my parents got divorced when I was 6 and it was a violent and messy break up as well. now they get along well enough and are both happy and have been for years. half the people I know have either grew up in a home where their parents later divorced or have gone through it as adults.

You have to think about that he's now sitting the entire length of the country away from them while it is going on. That can't be easy for a kid to have to focus on school, sports, and then a divorce of two people he loves and he's too far away to be there for either of them easily (which could add to a feeling of home sickness).

I’m 2,500 miles away, similar to DJ. The distance only made it worse for me.
I dealt with anger more than anything. That type of anger clouds your judgment.
I only had myself and my career to reckon with.
DJ has more on his shoulders than any 6 year old, more than most any other 20 year old, and definitely more than this 36 year old had on his.
So, take your apathetic posts elsewhere, please.
Go Tigers ??

I've seen an article that said his parents split up in June 2019. I don't think this is some new revelation that he's dealing with. I'm sure it sucks for him, but I'm not sure I buy it's a valid excuse for his lack of development this season.

Prefrontal cortex isn’t fully developed until around 25. This is the part of the brain that controls emotions, gratification and empathy. Very understandable for a young adult to not react rationally to something that appears rational to the adult. A lot of what keeps young adults focused and on task is family support.
I had spotty support in college and was an abysmal college student after a stellar high school campaign. Went a different career route that kept me better in check and magically around 25-26 years old I figured out how to turn that into a successful career.

Well, there is something to be said for the disruption of his closest support system. And 20 is still a kid.

It bothers him probably, sure. He’s more mature as an adult to handle it and he doesn’t live with them anymore. I also don’t feel as if that’s the reason for his lack of development at this time. He will improve or he will be replaced. From a personal anecdote, a similar situation, my parents divorced when I was an adult. I kept my job, I actually got promoted, and I got married. I’m nothing special, your typical average guy. It’s possible to have parents get divorced and work through that while still excelling at work. DJ is not an amateur athlete. He is held to higher standards. He’s rich and famous and he will be criticized. There’s not protection at the top.

I am not a divorce expert. (Been married 46 years, 6 months and 7 days - and counting.) I have no formal training in divorce counseling. But, through the years I have seen children of divorce. I have talked to counselors about how divorce affects the children. (I taught college students for 30+ years, have worked in churches teaching junior and senior high kids, have just known people who are going through a divorce.)
Professional counselors have told me (and it has proven true in my observations) that the most common emotional reaction of a child (any age 3-33) is guilt.
"What did I do wrong?...It's my fault...If I had only been better...I should have done more....If I had been there...etc."
I don't know DJ. I don't know that he is reacting this way. I don't know if it is affecting his play on the field.
But, I know the odds are he is going through a grieving process and is blaming himself for the divorce.

Every time that I had a straight A student start making bad grades, it was because of a divorce. Yes, the kids feel guilty.
