it was that asinine trick play on the kickoff return. That's really what lost the game.

We only resorted to trickery out of sheer desperation and inability to move the ball. That still falls back on you know who

Busted coverage on a 4th down? Lack of ball security by a return guy? Lack of ball security by another return guy?
It's a team sport. Every person, all the way down to the water boy, is responsible for every success and failure.

While the actual play call was stupid, let’s remember that we gained about 15-20 yards on it. The ridiculous fumble wasn’t part of the trick play.
Dabo letting a QB throw for 98 yards against the 117th passing defense is what led to that demise.

You can point to lots of things both teams did to allow the other team opportunities, but that trick play had nothing to do with the fumble. It was actually a great time to call it because it was totally unexpected. Your runner had gained 15-17 yards up to around the 37 before fumbling. Had he returned it for a TD everyone would be praising the call. It wasn't the play, it was the fumble which had nothing to do with the play. The ball carrier was a RB, he should know how to secure the ball. Sounds like some of our fans who blame the play call when a receiver is wide open and drops the ball. They scream we should have run it. Love the armchair QBs though....makes for great reading.

No, this is incorrect. The play only got to around the 32 yard line. Shipley could have gotten more than that just running straight ahead.
Mafah is not a returner. He's used to running between the tackles, not returning kickoffs. He's also not as fast as Shipley. It was just a dumb call all around.

So you think kickoff returners should secure the ball differently than a RB I guess. People saying that are looking for anything to hang a hat on except facts.

We lost the game because we didn’t do enough to win it.
There is zero excuse for Cade not seeing the field at all!

Hey, aren't you Gus, Billy Chapel's catcher in the movie For Love of the Game? Thumbs Up for the pic. Pretty decent catcher too.

You know that play worked perfectly right? The fumble had nothing to do with the play.
