Did Notre Dame Find Some Offense or did . . .

Oct 31, 2022, 12:44 PM

Did Syracuse have a case of the dreaded: "Clemson effect"?

A condition teams get after they have poured everything(including mental and physical) into beating Clemson; but still, come up short.

Notre Dame did more of what we should have done: "run the ball right at that small defensive line"! Shrader getting hurt also helped the Irish.

What do you all think? Was it more a case of Syracuse being exposed? Or has Notre Dame suddenly found some offense?

Or maybe the fact; Syracuse couldn't move the ball gave ND more chances on offense which led to the nice offensive output.

I think it was just a good matchup for ND

Oct 31, 2022, 12:47 PM

Their offense doesn't function very well if they can't run the ball. Guess what? Cuse is terrible at stopping the run. Add in a very solid ND defense and some Cuse turnovers and you get that result.

BTW... ND only had 362 yards of offense. They ran for 246, but they only averaged 4.8 yards per play. That's not good. That won't get it done against a much better Clemson run defense.

Best thing I have heard all day! TigersAndCubs® I hope you are right.

Well, our offense needs to get it in gear. DJ and Shipley up the middle won’t cut it against their D. We can’t have turnovers or play for a quarter and expect to win.

"DJ and Shipley up the middle won't cut it against their D."

EXACTLY!!! But I can guaran-dam(n)-tee you that Streeter will **REPEATEDLY** waste many downs, and hence several series . . . play that "stay the course" game. Every drive is, in some sense, it's own beast. You can't just "stay the course" over the course of a game on the assumption that it'll all pan out if we don't give up on it. But this seems to be predicated on the assumption that "eventually" getting productivity in terms of stats is "close enough" to strategically sufficient to win games. But this is not so. Eventually accumulating enough yards to look respectable in the state columns doesn't matter if you wasted several series and possessions trying to "establish" something. Every down is precious. If Streeter continues to waste downs and play Captain obvious w/ the sequencing of plays, then we'll find ourselves punting all night and waiting for the defense to win it for us yet again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well we only got 4.9 yp carry vs. Cuse . . .

Oct 31, 2022, 3:22 PM [ in reply to I think it was just a good matchup for ND ]

I know our O will be playing ND's defense and not Clemson's defense, but if 4.8 isn't great, then what's 4.9?

And think of this. Syracuse got 4.4 yp rush vs. Clemson, but only 2.4 vs. ND.

I'd say all this together is a bit concerning.

Syracuse's D line is way undersized and and ND took full advantage of the size difference. We did too, but were not quite as efficient as ND. We are really going to have to be balanced and again, I think Shipley is the key and it's going to have to be creative ways to get him the ball other than just off-tackle ..... pretty much like the Syracuse game. I also think we are going to have to use our tight ends more.

QB run was not a part of Cuse game plan against . .

Oct 31, 2022, 12:56 PM

ND. Ran 21 times against us and twice against them. Too beat up after our game so that part of their offense was gone. To answer question, probably some of both.

If Clemson doesn't shoot itself in the foot...

Oct 31, 2022, 12:56 PM

by turning the ball over five times again Cuse, the score would have been just as one-sided as the Cuse/Notre Dame game.

no, Notre Dame is the same team.........

Oct 31, 2022, 12:59 PM

that lost to Marshall and Stanford. The writing was on the wall for Syracuse.........they struggled to beat Purdue and UVA at home, they beat a Leary-Less NCstate team that over inflated their ranking..........not to mention we made them look better than they were as well.

Neither team is good, Notre Dame just had a definite matchup edge over Cuse.

Re: Did Notre Dame Find Some Offense or did . . .

In order of your questions:

Clemson effect: The Cuse QB had it because he was beaten up coming into the game and played horribly because of it. I'm sure the rest of their team had it to some extent as well, but less noticeably.

"ND did more of what we should have done": We rushed for 293 and ND rushed for 246. We had 450 total yards and ND had 362. We outdid everything ND did on offense but we turned it over 4 times and ND turned it over once.

We showed ND the blueprint to beat Syracuse and they followed it. They mimicked what we did all the way down to making sure they took away Tucker from the offense. The difference was Syracuse QB came in injured and got knocked out of the game. Overall the QB position played terribly for Cuse vs ND. Syracuse also tried to force Tucker a little more, but still not near his normal workload.

Notre Dame has a really good rushing attack. They have a great TE. They have had that all year. Teams who can eliminate those options have success against ND.

Syracuse also turned the ball over to Notre Dame twice, one of which was a pick 6 to start the game.

"We outdid everything ND did on offense but we turned it over 4 times and ND turned it over once."

And we gave up the dreaded 14-point swing with the scoop and score when we were about to score, whereas ND got the benefit of the pick-6 on the first play.

We need to *not* turn it over to ND.

I think Notre Dame is more of the team that went against Marshall, Stanford and Cal. They literally followed our blueprint to beat Syracuse and succeeded (minus the turnovers, of course).

If you read posts here you will learn that

Oct 31, 2022, 1:03 PM

we "broke them" and they were so physically and emotionally exhausted from their game against us, to the point that they found it nearly impossible to be ready for Notre Dame.

I think Notre Dame is more talented than Syracuse, which was probably the main reason why Notre Dame won. You knew at some point Notre Dame would figure things out under their new coach.

I don't have any concern that we will lose to Notre Dame, but I would like to see us put together a complete game on both sides of the ball.

Notre Dame is easily the most talented team we will play during the regular season this year.

Agreed !!!

I still maintain that if Clemson doesn't shoot itself in the foot with five turnovers (one on downs), Clemson wins that game by at least three TD's.

What’s this “we” you’re referring to? You don’t give #### about the football program and want them to fail.

Fact is Syracuse was pretty banged up after the Clemson game and key players were kept out of contact practice during the week.

Re: Did Notre Dame Find Some Offense or did . . .

Oct 31, 2022, 2:01 PM

Yes. Emotionally reeling, Schrader less and ND did play well. I think their O line matched up better than ours did with Dinos Defense but the 3-3-5 is susceptible to being bullied around if your that much undersized.
I'd rather catch ND after a win than if they'd lost though.
