DH rule in college baseball

I never paid attention in previous games, but it seems like the college baseball rule is that once a starting pitcher (who is also the DH - like Grice) gets pulled, you can then most them to a defensive position like first base, for example. However, when you do that, you give up the DH position for the rest of the game. So, Caden moved to first and stays at his previous batting position. Amick is out, and so he can’t be a DH because that position is no longer available. We then have to switch pitchers every inning because the rule says that the incoming pitchers have to fill the DH spot (so we pinch hit for them every inning and take them out). Is that how it works? I haven’t ever paid attention, and Caden Grice has pitched so well this season it hasn’t really crossed my mind, but I couldn’t figure why we’d take Amick out unless we had to.
Thanks for any confirmation from baseball experts. amazing game last night, and I was just frustrated with that Grice strikeout at the end of the game.

Exactly how that works

Grice could have come out as pitcher and been the DH and not burned the DH by moving to 1st though.
I think coach made that decision bc he wanted Grice to be on the field for his leadership in the last out but it just resulted in a 3 run home run to give them the lead

Yep, don’t fault the decision. Grice made some great plays at 1st in extra innings (diving tag of first base). Just stinks that there wasn’t a way to keep Amick in. He could have won the game for us in extra innings.

I think there was another option to swap guys around. Grice to right and Ingle to catcher to keep Amick in the game. Or maybe Grice to 1st, Amick to right, and Ingle to catcher. It gets complicated. Since 2 way players are more common in softball the substitution rules are more flexible, which I like. I hated to see us lose our 400 hitter in extra innings when a homer would end the game.

I wondered if we had taken Ingle out, moved Amick to right and Grice to 1st, would that have been in the rules? Coach Bakich knows what he is doing and all we needed was a fly ball to win so don't blame Amick being out for the loss in one of the best games I have ever seen. Apparently the DH has nothing to do with position and our hands were tied.

Having to remove anyone in our top 6 in the batting order is a tough call. Maybe moving Ingle to catcher would only be allowed due to injury because of all extra time to get him ready?

We could’ve move cooper to C but the best move would’ve to let grice DH and deal with a minor drop off in defense at 1st but keep your best bat in the lineup. It’s not like Amick is bad on defense but his bat is a must need. Bakich made many mistakes last night.

That is exactly how it works. Two things could’ve happened here when we took out Caden
1. Leave Amick at 1st and let Caden DH 2. Put Caden in RF (hasn’t played there this year but he can) move Ingle to C taking Jarrell out the game
I love this team and our coach but Bakich messed this one up badly

He had done this several times during the season. I guess he thought we were going to win right away and didn't need Amick's bat.
