defensive remedy and oh how we need it

Sep 16, 2012, 10:01 PM

1) Very simple solution. Run tackling drills in practice. Teach the boys how to use their shoulders, not their arms. Practice getting in front of the ball carrier to make the hit. One will be surprised how much a confidence booster it would be if the coaches taught fundamentals and the players practiced those fundamentals. Obvious arm tackling (waving) has to stop. Period.

2)Defensive backs should time their hits on a receiver to closely coincide with his reception of the ball. This is easily done when the receiver stops for the catch. That way he will be stationary , not moving or faking (as he is when defender lays back and gives him room). I see this error time and time again with our team resulting in defender getting faked out. Go to the ball. The ball will lead you to the receiver. If it doesn't then the ball will lead you to an interception. Go to the ball.

I bet he hasn't heard about these kinds of things. I haven't either. Thanks for showing everyone what needs to be done. It seems so simple.

I think most of what you posted is obvious. And I think BV knows this stuff.

But you did point out something I think we can all agree on.

And it's that we rarely see any hard hitting from our secondary when opposing receivers make the catch. Unfortunately, I think it's because we are so far out of position most of the time.

He's bound to know it but is he having the boys practice it? There's a big difference between telling someone how to do something and having them actually do it. It's tough to flip a coin based on someone's instructions but easy once you've done it.

Football is based a lot on repetition. One's body is trained to do certain things and thus does them out of habit. There is not much time to think.
