I know going into last year XT and Foster would have been the starters. We will be loaded at end so who do you guys think will start. I am thinking Murphy and XT but could see kJ getting the nod.

I can see him beating out Foster (not sure where he is at football condition wise) but Xt will be tough but it is a money making year for both if they want to play at the next level.

Yeah, XT is the better situational edge rusher, but I think Coach V trusts Henry more. They’ll both play a lot.

I think XT and KJ will battle for the spot opposite Murphy. Foster will back up Murphy. If XT has the greatest potential but COVID definitely set him back.

True, I like Henry out of the gate by a hair but it’s the type of deal where if XT really blossoms like expected and takes ownership of the little things, he could very well be the guy sooner rather than later. It’s up to him how great he wants to be.

I think XT got outrecruited, honestly. I don't see him beating out Murphy...and Murphy really isn't a weakside end. I mean, I think he's talented enough to play there, but that's really not his ideal position. He's a strongside guy.
And I'm genuinely interested to see if Foster's healthy. If he is, he's a fairly big upgrade on what we were running with at weakside last year. He's a guy who can get you 10+ sacks over the course of a season and supply near-constant pressure with a base 4-man rush, we just didn't have that last year.

Murphy on the strongside and Justin Foster on the weakside would be my guess. Foster's always been our best pure pass rusher if he's truly back healthy from long-haul COVID. You go back and watch the film, the dude's not a classic NFL prototype but the dude's a handful and very, very difficult to control. Murphy tapered off a bit down the stretch as true freshmen tend to but he looked good. Amazing tools. Competitor. Sees it. Gets after it. And you can tell he had a solid high school base.
XT, Mascoll, KJ Henry probably rotate among the backup spots...to be honest, I'm middlin' "meh" on all of them...they've all got gobs of physical ability, they've none of them really ever truly delivered on it. They flash in spots, that's about it...and then vanish for long stretches. XT's stiff as a board, plays way too high for a shorter end...he's got heavy hands and that rattlesnake first step, but he gets uprooted too easily because he desperately needs better flexibility, especially in his hips. He gets a good line the QB is dead; he doesn't redirect well. At all. Henry's plenty flexible and also has a cobra-like first step, he's just...casual. It's like...man, where'd you go? You just see him fade out of the game for long, long stretches. Mascoll looks like what you'd send out to Central Casting for but his film has been is shockingly average, he's thus far played like Just a Guy and he just didn't get any better last year, seemingly, at all. Which is weird given that he looks like arguably our best specimen aside from maybe Murphy, and you see...flashes. Not sure what the deal is there.
I think we roll 5-6 ends this year but Murphy and Foster will almost certainly be our starters, IMHO. The coaches did seem pretty high on Greg Williams' upside and he does look the part, physically. Might be the year he starts contributing.

Well said - Foster is relentless, but post-COVID Foster after a year long hiatus from the sport may have a difficult time recapturing that magic from 2 years ago, at least right away.

I know nobody mentioned it but we have a very talented DE your all forgetting that Dabo raved about in the spring. He was hurt for most of spring but Dabo said they knew he was a project with no experience coming in but the light had come on.
Ruke Orhorhoro Will surprise us all this season, also Upshaw Jr played his heart out last season & just got better as the season went on.
Ruke could earn a co-starting position if he’s healthy!

Personally, I would like to see Foster add 15 pounds and move inside because we need experienced depth at DT. Here’s what I would like to see:
DE:
Murphy/Henry/G Williams/Denhoff Xavier/Mascoll/Upshaw/Patterson
DT:
Bresee/Foster/Capehart/Reuben Davis/Ruke/T Williams/Page

I think you’re sleeping on Capehart. He’s a monstrous talent and would be the best DL on 90% of P5 teams right now, imo.

I had him behind Bresee and Justin Foster, who would be a 5th year senior lol. Calm down.

The starting line up may not be quite as good as 2018's

starting 4, but the second team and even 3rd makes this year's unit WAY deeper.
I hope everyone stays healthy (on both sides of the ball) b/c this could be very special unit by years end. I think the Defense has the potential to be the best we've had since BV has been here.
The depth of D line and Linebacker is sick, and the experience at secondary is really really good.

There may be some surprises at DE
Jul 18, 2021, 10:06 PM

My first guess is Murphy and KJ start on the outside. I like how KJ improved last year as the season progressed. Between Foster, XT, Mascoll and even Swint, I have no guess who gets the most playing time after the two starters.
My wild card at DE is Bresee. If Capehart goes next-level this year at DT, I believe he will force the coaches to move Bresee to the outside on a part-time basis at the expense of all DEs except Murphy. Our best D-line may end up being Murphy & Bresee on the outside with Tyler and Capehart at tackle.
People here don't realize how athletic Bresee is and how elite his pass-rush skills are. At some point during the year, don't be surprised if DE becomes his starting position. Regardless, he will rotate between inside and outside.

I’ll take a wait and see approach on our defensive ends. I personally think Lemanski Hall is the weakest link on this staff. His first year he benefited greatly from inheriting Ferrell and Bryant coming back, who were coached by Marion Hobby and Todd Bates. The development of this position has had a decline since he has taken over.
