DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2024 Edition

There was once a time not long ago when even the staunchest opponents could not run the ball against the Clemson Tiger defense. The Clemson Tigers took pride in their ability to make opposing offenses one dimensional. Since 2013, the Tigers defense have faced off against the following running backs.
Todd Gurley - UGA (2013) - 154 Yards for 2TD
Andre Williams - BC (2013) - 70 Yards for 0TD
Carlos Hyde - Ohio St (2013) - 113 Yards for 1TD
Samje Perine - Oklahoma (2014) - 134 Yards for 0TD
Dalvin Cook - FSU (2015) - 194 Yards for 1TD
Samje Perine - Oklahoma (2015) - 58 Yards for 1TD (67 Total Rushing Yards)
Ohio State (2016) Total Rushing - 88 Yards 0TD (The entire team was held to less than 100 yards rushing)
Bo Scarbrough - Alabama (2016) - 93 yards 2TD
Cam Akers - FSU (2017) Total Rushing - 40 Yards for 0TD
Najee Harris - Alabama (2018) 59 Yards 0TD
The abovementioned running backs were juggernauts in college football and Clemson managed to either contain them or shut them down altogether. I listed all of that information to say this about our current season. Teams were able to rush at will against this defense and that is uncharacteristic of Clemson. For crying out loud, the Citadel was able to rush for 288 yards against Clemson this season. So, what is the real issue?
I believe it is the linebacker play because the rest of the defense seems to be doing their jobs. The front four is getting plenty of penetration along the line of scrimmage. All you have to do is watch film and take notice that the opposing QB does not have much time at all to get a pass off. I've also noticed that the line backers are hanging back about 5-8 yards behind the front four once the ball is snapped. This allows the opponent to dump a quick hand off and the D-Line has now over pursued the play which opens a gap for the ball carrier to exploit.
That happens a great deal in football, but the line backers appear to remain at their position 5-8 yards back and wait for the ball carrier to come to them. This cannot happen because if there is a missed tackle then the ball carrier will gain more chunk yards due to being in open space. The defense under Coach Venables would not scheme that way. The linebackers would run up to the line of scrimmage and reinforce the D-line at the point of attack and swarm the ball carrier. This allowed the corners and safeties to cover the open field and prepare for a pass if necessary.
Wes Goodwin is currently the DC and LB Coach, as a DC he may have what it takes because he's an analytical person. He has a lot of experience in the X and O type of football. Linebacker play has to improve if Clemson is going to return to the glory days. Does Wes Goodwin need to be fired? I don't believe so because he brings strength to the table from a scheme standpoint and analyzing the opposing offenses. However, I do believe that Coach Swinney should hire a dedicated linebacker coach and at this point and time, Ben Boulware is my choice if I had a say in the matter. Either Ben Boulware, Spencer Shuey, or James Skalski would probably work out well and give either one of those young men an opportunity to begin a long and fruitful coaching career.
At any rate, linebacker play is an area where improvement is a must if we want to win the national championship anytime soon. Tackling must improve as well because arm tackling and swiping at the ball does nothing.
GO TIGERS!

Who does Boulware replace?
Goodwin needs to go. It's that simple. I do not agree that he is a strong defensive schemer.

Why why why do they have to be a player without coaching experience. Not to mention who else are you firing because unless I’m mistaken, your coaching number is maxed out. His a novel idea, get someone who can ACTUALLY do both.

that cannot and should not be overlooked. The Clemson defense has consistently declined since Wes Goodwin took over as DC in 2022.
I've said it before and I will say it again, handing-over the keys to the defensive kingdom (a defense that was consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally), to someone with no prior DC experience, as opposed to conducting a national search and hiring the best possible candidate available, was ill- advised.
I firmly believed that promoting Wes Goodwin to replace BV was a bad decision at the time, and nothing has changed over the last three years that would prompt me to reconsider that assessment now.

You also mentioned another huge issue with the D Line. They lose gap integrity when rushing the QB. The pocket needs to be squeezed and close up the area the QB is in. We just rush wildly and give far too many lanes for the QB to escape. Just getting to the QB isn’t what a Dline is supposed to do. There’s are many games within the game they are SUPPOSED to play. The defensive ends lose contain far too often. I could go on…
The linebackers also commit to eye Candy too often. They also miss RB or TE with a late release or the wheel route. The linebackers rarely get home when they do blitz.
We don’t have a run stopping safety either. When we drop into single high and a safety walks up into the box they aren’t disrupting the plays. Tanner Muse and Simmons were masters at wrecking havoc on QB and RB. We have so many issues on defense.
We (CB) lose leverage too easily and get caught with our pants down and it results in a big PI call. They give too much cushion in press man and allow easy releases to WR. They don’t play zone soundly. They leave far too many soft spots for the receiver to settle into. The corners and safeties take bad angles and get out run too often resulting in explosive plays.
The worst of it all is the bad play fits. Especially on third and forever. Goodwin gets away from what made it third and long and gives up easy explosive plays. When bringing heat is shutting down the offense Goodwin is going to call a soft zone and drop 7-8. I could go on and on.

Coach Venables, is that you? He would say similar statements in media press conferences. He was correct.

Spot on, and you have to mention the fact that we basically try to slap the ball carrier to the ground. Need to relearn how to wrap up and bring someone to the ground
