Defense

Every year we here how great our D will be and it never lives up to pre-season hype. Why? We have the players but not the aggressive intent. We play too much "bend but don't break" and "catch and grab" nonsense. If defense is not defined by aggressive behavior, it is not going to be effective. You WILL get burned sometimes but also, your defense will create advantages. We played that way in the first half vs Ga. Why a cease and desist? I believe we quit hitting during the week once the season begins because of fear of injuries. It is well known that Nick Saban did not adhere to this belief and you could see it on the field. This year in the Ga./ Ala. game, Ala.(in the first half) the defense for Ala. was the most attacking I have ever seen. We need to strive for that kind of mentality. We are coaching meekness instead of fierceness- we need to play with BAD intentions like we are starting to do on offense. GO TIGERS!

When we get Woods and Capehart back at full strength and a little more maturity in Brown we can go on the offense with the defense and that time is soon! The D line with those two is so different because you can't block Woods with one and Capehart as well...can't double both and some of these new folks have enough pt to look great as well, they are no longer bench roosters...good luck FSU...have noticed that our O line stays with them and spreads out the rushers..OK to run them off the field if they want to go...the new O line coach has done well as has the WR corch!

It's been disappointing this year to see broken tackles at the LOS and the runner gain another 5 yards. That used to never happen. I've also noticed LB's out of position and taking bad angles on making tackles. The DB's still appear to be coached well though on how to make open-field tackles.

I don't like seeing so many broken tackles either, but what I noticed on Saturday was our second level defenders breaking down (assuming an "athletic position") 4 or 5 yards away from the ball carrier. I'll need to watch this more carefully to see if it was just our players on this particular Saturday or if it is "standard" technique. I am not a football coach and I know they're like apples and doughnuts, but in rugby the breakdown happens much closer to the ball carrier. IMO this lets the defender dictate the terms of the tackle.

I don't have the stats on hand, but the 1st team (at full strength) defense has been salty this year so far. Don't let the PPG avg fool you b/c that number is skewed by the big leads and 3rd/4th team guys getting lots of snaps with 2nd stringers

now that the offense isn't putting the D in terrible positions and giving some breathing room the whole perspective changes...

barring key injuries this is a very dangerous team that can make a run at winning it all

Clemson's defense has not been scored on in the first quarter this year.

The offense has scored 63 points in the first quarter. We are an explosive offensive team that causes other teams to have to be super aggressive to catch up.

While we have some youth at DE, we are jumping on people early and playing a ton of young talent. By the second half of the season, we should be rounding into form for the playoffs.

Agree with most people. Stats lie a bit on the defense. However, I

I do agree with you on the tackling piece.

I get that "you might get hurt tackling" during the week. But, to me the only way to get better at it is to practice it. Practice tackling and depend on your depth if someone is a bit sore. Of course, be smart as you can about it. Don't go hard on a Friday night before a game. But, you can 100% tell the teams that practice tackling more during the week than other teams.
Sometimes one broken tackle is the difference between winning or losing a game.

I wish we practiced proper tackling during the week. But, of course, it's not up to me.

As someone that watches football Friday night(High School), Saturday pretty much all day and Sunday(NFL). By far the most devastating injuries are the "NON-CONTACT" ones.

So, practice hitting, please! LOL! Wish list post!

providing to get our depth up to 'the standard' for the long season ahead, plus the overall continued development that sometimes only live game film can provide.

Not allowing a single point in four games in the First Q, including vs UGA, says a lot to me about the starters, our preparation, and overall game planning. I would expect that Wes will start getting more creative with them as our depth improves and he can trust more from those on the field at any given time.

Too many tnetters do not get "Depth"!

Clemson is playing "it's depth" good, bad or indifferent! Would people rather we learn Hoffler or Denhoff have trouble holding the edge when the game is in doubt?

No. You do it when the game is pretty much decided.

You then take that real game video and you coach that player up. Now, when the coach is talking in practice "it makes more sense"!
But, until you go through it and maybe even have a huge M.E. on a play, you don't know. You don't know what you haven't experienced in the game.

I hate to see that they have given up so many yards; but I think it is only serving to make them better.

Think about it. If the 2nd team defense is better - when they are going against the 1st team offense it's going to make them that much sharper.

And versus Stanford regardless of the yards; they only gave up 14 points. Sure, Stanford could have kicked FG's; but they came to DV to win.

If Stanford had not self-destructed early on and lost their mojo, I think it could have been a very different game with their running success...

Yep, and if Gamecocks could "fly well" there might not be such a thing as KFC!

Coming up and making the stop when "it's needed" is something you can't discount. If you are going to scorn the defense for giving up yards as a fair critic. One must also give credit for stopping that same rushing attack on all those 4th downs, no?

I don't think Stanford "lost their mojo", I think our team snatched it out of their hands, threw it on the ground and stomped on it. :)

For the 1st half-yes. It did change in the 2nd half. The 1st half was an " example" of the proper mindset of a winning defense.
