why do you not block off the streets with barriers?

Seems a little more preparation could not stopped this tragedy.

so their barricades suck.

I am sure they leave space for emergency vehicles to get in if needed, but block them with police cars or something they can move, otherwise they are not barricades, they are obstacles.

Permanent quick drop bollards are the best solution.

Up during events like this, down when not needed, can be lowered in seconds by emergency crews

Does not obstruct pedestrian movement

these work, but usually not on 200 year old city streets

I would guarantee the streets of downtown NO have very old - and very active - water, sewer, electrical, and communication lines buried underneath. You have to use the streets/sidewalks for underground utilities. Would be next to impossible to install this type of bollard crossing an intersection, just too many critical utility pathways that probably couldn't all be relocated.

as someone who has been to multiple Mardi Gras and other Bourbon St visits

there are people milling around on 40-50 city blocks on big party night, many streets with (somewhat) moving traffic. That's an impossible task to heavily barricade that large of an area from one nut who wants to mow down people. There are people in the streets everywhere, it just goes with the territory. Canal Street is a main road that's at least 6 lanes and I would guess was fully open, not barricaded at all. They do keep vehicles off Bourbon, but that's about it.

Bourbon Street has had barriers for decades but undoubtedly ineffective

Las Vegas also has many fixed bollards along The Strip.

This type threat has been known for years but perfect protection is difficult in major cities and major events. The number of potential targets is endless.

He was driving the Ford F150 EV (Lightning). Based on the front end damage he just drove straight through.

Barrier manufacturers need to improve their designs to accommodate EVs and the lower COG with more weight.

There are pics out there on social media of the whole thing.
