While we wait on word regarding WG and the direction DS is looking to go, I wanted to chime in on the conversation.
I'm not convinced firing WG is the best path forward, but we are all in agreement that something has to change. I don't know if our run troubles were scheme related, being out muscled, or over pursuit. The product on the field and the end result must be different. If we go the route acquiring a new DC, I have one that is sure to make a huge splash.
Steve Spagnuolo has now been with the Chiefs for 6 seasons, making $3.5 million a year. He runs a 4-3 but uses mutliple blitz formations, inclusing corners and/or safeties more than 25% of the time.
I realize that luring Spagnuolo away from the Chiefs would be difficult, but at his age, I don't think it is out of the question. His salary would need to be comparable but the promise of better weather and beautiful golf courses can't be ignored.
The thing I like with Spagnuolo's defenses is the technique. Their tackling has been tremendous and his defenses constantly put pressure on the QB. They aren't always the most vicious defense, but the use of leverage and speed makes up for that.
Interested to read your thoughts.

Jeff Hafley. Did a good job at Ohio state and now with the Packers. Does not want to be a head coach is another plus. Would be hard to pull from the packers.

I like Hafley, but I truly believe he is done with college football.

You’re most likely right about that. I’m just hoping it’s a Chip Kelly sort of situation. Where he doesn’t want to be a head coach at the college level due to the current situation but would look at coordinating.

If I recall correctly, he specifically left college ball because he said he wanted to coach football and not worry about the constant free agency. He was a good coach for BC and was a shame to see him leave but honestly can’t blame him.

It is quite realistic. He has coached college, semi pro, cfl and the nfl.
For a 65 year old coach, an NFL schedule can be daunting. 6 seasons is a pretty long stint for an NFL DC.

He's with the best team in the world, he wouldn't make 3.5 at Clemson and he darn sure doesn't want to hit the recruiting trail at his age.

The recruiting point is a good one. He may not have the energy nor the desire for it.
The entire college landscape is about the almighty dollar. I don't think money is an issue for the right person.

Not using proper technique will make ANY defense look terrible!
Out of proper gaps Losing containment on the edges of the defense Poor tackling Secondary being too hands on, always chasing and not getting their heads around to find the ball
All are coaching related and are correctable: Replace the player who can’t or won’t change Replace the coach who doesn’t know what to do or doesn’t demand that his players do what they are coached to do.
Thanks for listening.

How about if we are unable to get Spags we just go ahead and get a former player who played for him (Frankfurt Galaxy/NFLEurope), coached with him in Philly and helped Spags with a recommendation to Tom Coughlin (his former college coach) to hire Spags as the DC for the NY Giants. That person would be Coach Reed.

I don't think you can get a coach from the NFL to come to college coaching because of the recruiting grind. I know there are some but not many.

The recruiting grind for most cfb coaches is over. You recruit the portal and you enter the bidding war for HS recruits. Money is now the recruiting tool.

I have an idea that might be easier than hiring Spagnuolo.

Why don’t we get some of his DNA and create a mini Monte Kiffin clone who will work for free and never leave Dabo?
I mean, it seems worth a mention while we are discussing moves that will never ever happen in this thread.
