Dabo needs to get serious about a punter

It may seem sort of silly, but what i took out of david hoods article " swanson will move on next years jack smith is on the roster but has punted 5 times in 3 years"

I mean most of us have not been real happy with swanson and then i find out jacks smith has punted 5 times in 3 years with one of them being an 18 yard punt. what's the plan? just to put up with bad punts another 4 years? As i further investigated sure enough alot of the big programs FSU, Georgia, Alabama are the top 3 in yards per punt.

I kind of get the sense that dabo has been spoiled by good defenses in the past, and whatever random punter he picks out from the state of alabama is "good enough"........no we need to do better. whatever happend to best is standard

Danny Ford would always have a great punter and FG kicker. Big believer in special teams and kicking game. These kickers come in highly rated. Swanson hit a 29 and 34 yarder when we needed to pin SMU deep. SC’s punter helped beat us two years.

Dabo has recruited highly ranked kickers. Punting has been an issue it seems.

Lulz. My freshman year in 1986 Danny was hosting open tryouts for punter it was so bad. My friend from high school made numerous cuts before our SS Spiers finally entered the picture.

Swanson proved he could punt plenty of times.

But every punt this year seemed he was trying a new technique. He’d kick 50 yarders, then next game average 33. Made no sense.

Swanson was supposedly a decent punter as far as ranking out of HS. He ranked 8th.. I guess that's fairly decent. Not sure about Smith. Who knows? Maybe Dabo thinks we are okay.

I don’t pretend to know the reason why or the answer, but it sure seems like we get pinned inside our 10 yard line by the other team’s punter a WHOLE LOT more than we pin other teams inside their 10 yard line. And it has been that way for quite a few years.

Our actual punting has sucked for a while, but the major issue of why every team has the greatest punter on earth when they play us is a terrible scheme on punt return. We never actually try to rush the punter, so they have all day to get the ball off. Then we don't try or can't block for a return so everything is either a fair catch, immediate tackle, or the ball is kicked over the returner and downed inside our 10.

I imagine in net punting yards we have to be in the bottom five % at least since Spiller graduated.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Swanson averaged 43.7 yards per punt last year. That was the 2nd highest avg

The stat that should be assessed is NET yards per punt...

It doesn't matter if he's kicks it 43 yards if his punts are being returned 10+ yards.

Swanson is an average to below average punter on his best day. So was Will Spiers. In fact, Clemson hasn't had a decent punter in over two decades.

Going after a punter signals a lack of confidence in your offense.

The last thing we need is our young guys on offense thinking the staff doesn’t believe them. What may be more effective psychologically is having no punter at all.

You got a mouse in your pocket? I've been fine with Swanson as he is pretty consistent and seems gets alot of punts inside the 20. He isn't glamorous but not all punters need to be.

We need to get dead serious about special teams in general

We’ve had a ton of issues on special teams this year

Poor punting
Poor punt return
Poor field goal protection

Then in the acc championship, the boneheaded KO return decisions reared its ugly head

I don’t know how Dabo can look back objectively on this season and say that we are playing winning special teams football

When he talks about complimentary football, that should include special teams.
