Dabo is growing as a program leader right before our eyes.

Hearing him talk in the press conference yesterday about how he approached this DC hire was great. He was thorough, he consulted others he trusts, and he spoke with multiple candidates for consideration.

Contrast this with the promotions of Goodwin and Conn a few years ago, when the process was much less extensive or thorough.

Couple this with Dabo’s shift in philosophy on the portal and NIL, and we can see the growth in him lately. It is really refreshing to see! It should give us all more confidence in the direction of our football program.

By no means was Dabo Complacent. He truly believed they could coach up young coaches and just keep churning out new coaches and promoting from within. Did not work unfortunately. I also think he truly felt he would continue to recruit and develop from the HS ranks. He’s now realized that’s not feasible anymore. Too many players are bailing and we aren’t winning recruiting battles due to NIL.

Dabo seemed to have convinced himself that the "Clemson way" worked because of good people, and that love and togetherness was the secret sauce to our success. While that program culture is certainly important, what I think he underestimated during that period of time was the vitality of having great coaches and elite talent. THAT was the secret sauce.

Putting unqualified coaches such as Goodwin and Conn in such important positions hurt our program, but to Dabo's credit, he admitted wrongdoing in his press conference yesterday.

Luke and Riley both seem to be great hires. I think their hires were also evidence of Dabo's growth as a leader.

Venables and Morris were both excellent hires. Dabo seemed to be hungry then, and perhaps he lost some of that hunger after our high-level success. It seems that he is getting back to that again, and our program will be better for it.

Just because they were on staff doesn’t make them qualified to take as big of a job as they took (obviously). That’s like saying let’s promote the intern straight to VP of sales because he was “on the team” when we hit record numbers. Experience as a coordinator matters, and the 2020-2022 hires proved that emphatically.

No OC/DC is going to be a top guy day one on the job. They need to learn their own tendencies, see what works, see what doesn’t, try, fail, try some more. But the place for the bulk of that learning and growth isn’t in Clemson, South Carolina.

How would you apply your first paragraph to Dabo Swinney when he was hired? According to you, he should have never been hired. I think it is that experience that prompts Dabo to first look inside his own staff and give someone a chance that otherwise would not get it. And as Dabo said, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I think two things can be true: Dabo was not "qualified" for the HC role based on the first paragraph, but it worked incredibly well for us. At the same time, I think it is fair to say Dabo is the exception and not the rule for that style of hiring practice.

A similar example to me is Tom Brady. Just because Tom Brady played quarterback at a highest level in the NFL until he was 45 doesn't mean every quarterback can do that, (see Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, etc). Just because Dabo did not have any HC or Coordinator experience when he go the HC role doesn't mean everyone can do that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Those decisions should be made with strong consideration for levels of risk.

1
5

Jan 16, 2025, 12:47 PM [ in reply to Re: Dabo is growing as a program leader right before our eyes. ]
Reply

Moreover, how comfortable are you with taking that risk?

When Dabo was hired, he was a big risk. However, he did have quite the job audition when he was interim head coach. In many ways, we knew what we were getting.

With that said, it was still a huge risk, given the fact that Dabo had never even been a coordinator. Clemson weighed the risk, and felt that it was worth it. We were a good but not great program that could not get over the hump and win a conference championship and make the Orange Bowl. Plus, I think Dabo was a risk the administration was willing to take since we had to consider what it would cost to pay Bowden's buyout while also paying the new coach his salary.

In contrast, promoting Goodwin and Conn to roles they never had was far riskier in many ways. Neither had the opportunity to do a working interview as interim DCs. In addition, we also had far more to lose as a program if those hires didn't work out. We were still elite, which of course we were not even close to elite when Dabo took over for Bowden.

It's also important to remember that just because there are rare examples of something working, it does not serve as evidence that it is likely to work again. Dabo's story is incredible, but even he should know that those sorts of stories are very uncommon - and very unlikely to apply to hiring coaches for his team.

He obviously has a heart for giving people with potential a chance, because he understands that he was given that type of chance.

He definitely swung the pendulum hard in that direction and it’s bitten him big time.

I think he has come back to reality now, and realizes that his story is not the norm and more often than not, a balance of experience and potential trumps amazing potential without experience.

That all being said, his best hires were Brent Venables and Chad Morris. Those are the 2 guys that got us over the hump and got us playing elite defense and offense.

And I think Matt Luke (if he stays for a few more years will be on that list)

All of these guys brought serious experience to the table.

Jeff Scott and Tony Elliott were the home grown exceptions that gave Dabo that confidence.

They did a great job maintaining the standard, but…

It’s also important to realize that it was Chad Morris’ offensive system and leadership that got us over the hump. And he was able to do it without an OL

There needs to be a few more players from the portal. Mostly defense, as we know, and a RB. The balance of the coaching staff is crazy. Half elite, and half nepo guys.

It showed a continued pattern of Dabo putting coaches in positions they were not qualified to be in.

One of the most important talents a leader must possess is understanding the skills and talents of those he is in charge of. While Dabo has made some really good hires since becoming a head coach, he has made more bad ones.

It seems that his learning and growing into this important aspect of being a leader, and I think our football program will be better for it.

as he evolves from being just a two-time national champion in what is without a doubt the most challenging era of college football, into being a three- or maybe even four- or five- or six-time national champion.

against poor funding, outdated facilities, lack of fan support, lack of administrative support, lack of everything, really.

Bottomline - It's absolutely not their fault.

Most of always had confidence and new he would adapt and that the situation was fluid. It still is. Glad you finally came onboard though.

that Dabo would adapt.

It's sad that it has taken him so long to do it, especially since plenty of other coaches were more proactive and flexible.

Nonetheless, he is growing and evolving as a leader and these recent changes are great examples of it.

The "homers" were right, and in the other hand, you were clueless. That's cool though. You have taken a lot of unnecessary abuse for your support of CBB and you were right about him. I was usually with you with him though.

I can’t believe the Judge in saying something positive about Dabo. I only think he or she is trying to throw us off. Now that Brownell is doing well I hear very little about the BB situation. If there was ever a troll on this board Judge you are the one👍

You are talking about Dabo like he's this naive young coach that's trying to "figure it all out"

Dabo has 2 National Championships, 9 ACC championships and multiple Head Coach of the Year awards

Be a little more respectful
