Dabo is digging himself quite a hole

Oct 23, 2022, 4:13 AM

Anyone with half a brain knows that DJ’s leash will be pretty #### short at ND in two weeks. I’d say 2 , maybe 3 series. If he can’t come out and move the offense and manage the game effectively, Dabo will be forced to bench him again. Everyone now knows Cade is capable of managing the offense well enough to produce points and win games. He will improve with more reps. Two weeks ago, Dabo was chastising anyone that questioned when Cade would be the starter. This week he benches DJ in the second half and Cade leads us to a great comeback win and he actually believes there’s no QB controversy?? The reality is DJ has about a half of football to prove he’s the guy or his career at Clemson is probably over. That’s the world we live in. No pun intended.

Nope. What folks don't seem to understand is that there is no QB controversy just because the fans think there is or might be. Dabo doesn't give a rip what the fans think. Until he thinks there is a controversy, or a decision to be made, there is no controversy. Dabo watches them practice and play, and has his finger on the pulse of the locker room. He has said DJ is the guy. End of story until he says otherwise. It is really that simple.

Cade has come a long way. He played very well doing the limited things he was asked to do. He gave us a good spark when we needed it. That is what a good backup is supposed to do. That is what Cade is. and what he will remain until Dabo, not the fans, decides otherwise.

I would think that at this point in his career at Clemson fans would know that Dabo knows what to do and when to do it, but for some reason the armchair coaches are just determined they know better how to run a football team better than Dabo. Newsflash: they don't.

Dabo just “said” in the middle of the 3rd quarter yesterday that DJ is NOT the guy. If he truly believed unquestionably in DJ he wouldn’t have benched him. Just by that action, we have a QB controversy.

Oct 23, 2022, 6:55 AM [ in reply to Re: Dabo is digging himself quite a hole ]

Dabo “said” nothing of the sort. His actions merely showed that DJ was having a bad game and he made an in game decision. Nothing in the season that DJ has had so far nor in anything said or done by Dabo suggests otherwise.

Agreed. A spark was needed. We got that from Cade, but we were limited more on our vertical passing game with Cade than with DJ. He is just not ready to run this offense. Say what you will but DJ has thrown nfl caliber passes before yesterday. Something was off yesterday. The more impressive part of tbe comeback wax tbat Cuse knew that Cade wasn't gonna throw it often and we were able to run it with power. Kid had his first bad day all season and DA fans are ready to toss him away. Cade will he the guy in time, but anyone with a brain has to see the lack of arm strength and lack of being able to read his blocks. Yesterday he was a great "handoffer" Hunter Johnson or DJ could've ran the same with those simplified play calls.

Re: Dabo is digging himself quite a hole

Let's be real. DJ had a bad game to go with 7 other pretty solid games. You don't change QBs when you are 8-0 and 2/3 of the way through your season unless the wheels are coming off and that clearly is not the case here. DJ is the leader of this team and the team looks up to him and responds to him as the starter. Dabo will use Cade as needed but there is no QB controversy nor is DJ on a short leash.

I am a big Dabo fan and Clemson is 8-0. But just as an observer. The play calling on offense just really suggest that they don't trust their QB's to throw the ball down the field and for the most part only do that when they need to. I think yesterday was a prime example. We hear about how Cade does, yet anybody watching that game could tell that they did not want to throw the ball. Not sure if that is Dabo's influence or Coach Streeters. But it is what it is.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well....

Oct 23, 2022, 8:09 AM

maybe Streeter just saw that their defense was worn out and the run was working? also, that kept their offense off the field and getting cold? Sometimes it's hard to admit that someone is just smarter....

Oct 23, 2022, 8:22 AM [ in reply to Re: Dabo is digging himself quite a hole ]

It's like banging your head against a wall...

The play calling does not in any way reflect a lack of confidence in either quarterback. What it does reflect is the inability of the receivers to get separation. You can't throw deep if your receivers aren't open.

With this game, Syracuse is #1 in the conference in pass defense. They are undersized on the defensive line. The play here is to run on them, which is what happened.

I can’t believe it. Someone sees what I do. Not only does he not get the ball out, he only sees a fraction of the field. He has all the physical tools besides besides speed. But his mind doesn’t seem to process the game as fast as most QBs. DJ has improved in 22. But regardless of what is being said, facts are he was taken out of the game yesterday because he was imploding. The freshman lead the team to a come from behind win in the second half. The facts say ALOT.

When you are able to run the ball you run the ball. Nothing more defeating for a defense than to be ran all over and can do nothing about it.

if he thought it necessary.

In fact most observers thought that practice to be intelligent and productive on Spurrier's part. It didn't mean the benchings were permanent, only temporary given the situation.

Dabo had a situation yesterday in which he believed a switch was necessary, and he acted. Yet, DJ's production so far this year doesn't warrant his permanent demotion. We are fortunate, extremely fortunate in that we DO have options, and that our H.C. has proven he's willing to do the necessary to accomplish his Number 1 goal: WIN ball games...a goal attained over and over and over!

I won't argue, my Friend.

Gibson was having a horrible start to the game. He couldn't get anyone out. Finally the manager comes out to the mound. Bob hands him the ball and says "what took you so long?". Somedays you just don't have it. Let's hope that yesterday was DJ's. Don't give up on him yet.

Oct 23, 2022, 8:13 AM

Guy had a terrible year, puts his nose to the grind, and comes back and has a very good year.

Until yesterday. When he was not good.

Cade provided a spark and I like using him in situations/series because he can do things that DJ can't.

But there are more things Cade can't do that DJ can...which is why DJ will remain our guy.

But to say DJ has to prove something to anybody after what he went through last year and what he has done for us THIS YEAR is laughable IMO

Re: DJ has proved all he ever has to do in my opinion

Oct 23, 2022, 11:55 AM

I agree Scott. Most agree a big part of DJ’s horrible year last year was mental.

My only concern is how quickly DJ lost confidence yesterday when a string of bad things happened. It was like it snowballed for him. You could just see his confidence tank. That is concerning for a team with Championship aspirations. Hopefully he shakes it off as a bad day, but he was missing wide open receivers yesterday consistently after suffering the adversity.

Also, sometimes one player outperforms another consistently in practice but maybe not in games. Time will tell. I agree DJ should start since the coaches see the separation and leadership (in practice), but like it or not this “QB competition” may continue with on field performance.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with you Scott

Oct 23, 2022, 11:58 AM [ in reply to DJ has proved all he ever has to do in my opinion ]

People are so quick to judge DJ for having ONE bad game but how about other great players who've had a STRING of bad games?

For example, Simpson has not looked good for two games, so do we bench him? He's our best LB, so no!

I agree with you Scott.

DJ has played well this year and had a very poor game. Cade came in and gave us a spark. He will be able to do that again if needed.

They need to stop calling so many QB runs for DJ. His runs should be a surprise not expected. He is just to slow. Cade has speed and can be a real threat even when they expect it.

Dabo knows what he is doing.

Re: Dabo is digging himself quite a hole

Oct 23, 2022, 8:31 AM

Dabo is not digging himself a hole nor is there a true QB controversy. Cade came in and did a nice job of managing the game. He was 2 of 4 for 19 yards and had 15 yards rushing in a quarter and a half. Dabo did say that Dj was our starter but also said he knows he has to play better. This bye week comes at the right time. Cade will get more time with the one's and if it looks like Dj is regressing again we will have a new starter. Dabo has taken us to 4 national championships so in Dabo I trust.

Some of you people really don’t know ball at all. It’s kind of disappointing.

QBs have off days and that’s exactly what happened. We had to make the change to Cade because Cuse had no film on him. It added an unpredictable element.

DJ is a lot better than Cade where it sits right now. Cade is not ready for where this team needs to got. DJ still QB1

Excellent personnel management yesterday. Total team effort for four quarters versus a determined top 15 team, and overcoming tremendous adversity for the W.

I can recall two times under Dabo where a fumble 6 near the opponent's goal line wound up in embarrassing blowouts - West Va in '11 and FSU in '13. Not this time.

Cade is going to be special despite the lack of belief some tnetters have in him. However the only reason Dabo pulled him was bc he knew they could run on Syracuse and needed a viable threat for the qb to pull it on a read option. The split second of hesitation was all they wanted from the read defender, Cuse did not respect DJ on the edge they knew they only had to clog up the middle that's why you kept seeing Streeter call toss sweeps and that rb motion screen while DJ was in the game.

DJ being off in the passing game meant the only way to loosen up in between the tackles was to have an outside and inside run threat on the field at the same time.

Honestly it was a brilliant coaching decision, chess not checkers boys.

So I don’t think he really cares what people think, or will let that dictate his decisions.
