DABO and special teams?

After seeing Dabos comments about the portal i assume we are not going to try and fix the glaring punting problem thru the portal. Dabo did go get a few players but he is still hesitant to use the portal to bolster his roster and upgrade talent. His comments about continued success with high school recruiting is baffling because last year certainly was a disaster of a recruiting class. Why not hire a special teams coach and put an emphasis on it ? If special teams this year are still a problem, then DABO needs to be held accountable. With the portal , there is no reason to struggle with punting or any other special teams. I am concerned about the secondary and safety positions and stunned that we havent addressed that yet with the season around the corner. You cant use the argument that you have no roster space, because if the talent on your roster isnt getting the job done, then you have a responsibility to address and fix the issue . The portal , like it or not, gives a coach the ability to make corrections and fix problems before they cost you a game . I really hope Dabo gets a safety and maybe a corner, and surely a punter in this portal window. We have a shot to be really elite this year but have a few holes to fill to be 100% ready to roll.

I do wish we could get a better punter. It's such as huge advantage having a punter that can boot it 55 yards vs 40 yards.

Why? Is there a stud punter in the portal?

I have the same question, clemsonforever1981. What punters are in the portal that we know are better than what we have?

Well roughly 90% of the teams in CFB had a better

punter last year, and it's not like that was an outlier - we are near the bottom of the country year in and year out in punting. I would imagine just about any punter in the portal could be a potential upgrade for us - assuming the issue is talent identification and not just terrible coaching once they arrive at Clemson.

I'm more worried about us getting every other FG attempt blocked than the punter situation. That will cost us a game this season if we don't get it corrected.

We shouldn't be in a situation where we can't protect a FG without a 5* DT.

No doubt a punter would be a great pull outta the portal. And overall special teams would benefit greatly from a new special teams coach or some type of coach to help the FG block issues from last year....
Please Dabo grab a punter and if possible put someone in to helpout on special teams! Clemson has the resources and it would be a disservice to not fix these issues now, before the 2025 season begins...Honestly there is no reason why we as alumni and fans should be stating these issues before the season , when the coaches and everyone already knows these issues exist! With today's semi pro college football rules that govern the college football landscape , we can make or fix these issues instantly!! Clemson does not have to go through another year of hoping and praying that the same special teams problems do not rear their ugly head again!

well if special teams and /or punting cost us a game this year, it will be criminal that we sat back and did nothing help the situation. It is irresponsible to go into a huge year and not have the special teams fixed! Surely there are better punter options than what we saw in the spring game exhibition.

Why do you think we are "doing nothing"? I think we can be 100% certain that blocking for FG attempts has been addressed and will be a continued focus. And that our punters are being pushed, coached, and are competing. Just because we don't sign a punter out of the portal (this is really what we have left to complain about, btw?), that doesn't mean the coaches "did nothing".

Not sure why OP thinks Dabo does nothing or plans to do nothing. Just something to complain and stress about I guess.

because nothing has been done in years while special teams have continued to haunt us. The proof is in the pudding, he is paid 9+ million to fix it, yet he hasnt. If you watched the punting after the spring game, you could see how much trouble we are in from a punting standpoint. It was brutal to watch !!

We have recruited and signed 2 of the best FG kickers in the country. We put some of our best players on FG block. We have AW returning punts.

The only thing you can complain about is the talent at punter. Trying to generalize that into Dabo not doing his $9M job is ludicrous (and inaccurate...he makes 11+).

Maybe because Special Teams has ALWAYS been putrid under CDS, so why would it be changed now? I understand the concern!

Definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result?

Having a dedicated Special Teams Coach would be great … you shouldn’t have to hold your breath with every FG or punt attempt …. for most of last season, especially with FGs ..we had a Special Ed team with the many blocks ..

and flip field position consistently.

The last really good punter that I can remember us having was Bradley Pinion. He was an absolute weapon on special teams. He’s the only punter that I can remember leaving school early for the nfl draft.

He was great. He's still in the NFL.

I was shocked when he left early...it came out of nowhere. But then he got picked in the 5th round which is pretty high for a punter. Since he was drafted in 2015, only 4 punters have been picked in the 4th round. Nobody in rounds 1-3.

That is part of the problem ! We have 2-3 punters taking up scholarships and that is a waste because they can’t punt for crap ! That is a coaching mistake in evaluating talent and offering scholarships that are being wasted .

Like it or not Beamer is putting Dabo to shame when it comes to special teams.
SEC teams understand the importance of special teams. Georgia's punter put
is in the hole consistently. It is ludicrous that this is still an issue. It will
cost us 2 or 3 games, if it is not fixed.

What have you seen from our punters that says *glaring problem*?

Based on what I saw in the spring game we don’t need a punter.

And the portal isn’t like shopping at Walmart. Just because a team signs some portal players it doesn’t guarantee they’re getting more talent. More often than not the portal is used to fill holes from other guys leaving.

Based on the spring game we struggle to punt the ball 40 yards , have no hang time , and are wildly inconsistent . Punting will be a weakness again . Most every team we play for years now has had better punters than we have . No excuse for not having a good punter. Thing is it has been this way most every year under Dabo . There is zero excuse for not making it a priority !

He chooses not to have a ST coach, he chooses to scholarship a 35 yd punter and he never pressures the punter. He has his reasons. But don't ask what they are in a presser.

We have been close to last in the ACC in punting and field goals blocked for years now and yet we still haven’t hired a special teams coach ??? Dabo is so wrong on this issue and it is not debatable . He continues to stick his head in the sand and ignore a glaring weakness.
