D. Watson.......4.89 forty?
Jul 2, 2013, 1:09 PM
|
|
Results from the Monday’s SPARQ..... For recruiting analysts, the SPARQ competition is one of the highlights of the year because it provides accurate measurements -- which often conflict mythical claims by a recruit or his high school coach. The SPARQ is the real deal.
•Gainesville QB Deshaun Watson, 6-3, 190, 4.89 seconds, 34.2 inches (Committed to Clemson)

Now you know the power of electronic timing vs hand timing. And BTW, he was faster than UGA's QB commit, Jacob Park (FYI). Ouch.
Jerrod Heard 2014 QB 4.59 Will Grier 2014 QB 4.73 Keller Chryst 2014 QB 4.75 Luke Rubenzer 2014 QB 4.76 Manny Wilkins 2014 QB 4.87 Kyle Allen 2014 QB 4.87 De Shaun Watson 2014 QB 4.89 Jacob Park 2014 QB 4.91 K.J. Heard is the only one that stands out as being fast. once you get past him you're just dealing with form more than anything. You lose a bunch of time in the 40 if you don't know how to start properly, or if you don't have excellent form through the entire run and lean at the finish. That's why guys train so hard on form before the combine. 4.89 with no form training is still fairly fast.

That would rank him #7 out of 18 QBs. Only one QB ran under 4.7 and that was a 4.59. 4 below a 4.8. I think he will do just fine.

Most teams have DE/DTs that run faster 40's.

Are you insinuating that a 4.89 40 should somehow disappoint us? If so, I guess your Dawgs won't be recruiting him anymore.

since we want a QB that can get 3-8 yards on a pickup when the coverage is too focused on the pass leaving him open. Decision making is what is key.
If speed was such a big factor for our offense Chad Kelly wouldn't be so highly regarded of a pick up for us, since he is much slower than TB or DW.

His offense isn't predicated on a quarterback who will outrun everyone on the field.
It requires a QB who can make good decisions, get the ball to his receivers, and pull it down to pick up 5 to 10 yards. This isn't a triple option system requiring a QB who can constantly get to the edge.

Chad Kelly had a 5.05 40.

And one of his main strengths recruiting wise was his elusiveness. Haven't been able to see it on the field since he had a RS and this recent injury, but 40 time doesn't necessarily translate to this type of scheme.

But I'm gonna guess folks here who watched every game know way more about how our offense is run than you do.
The bulk of his yardage were on designed keepers up the middle going for 5 to 10 yards, and the occasional get outside and pull the ball down and get some yardage plays. He lowered his head and picked up 2 or 3 extra yards on pretty much every play.
The QB position in the offense needs a mobile QB, not speedster.

do you think Morris didn't know Watson's 40 time when he recruited him? Or do you think he's just not clear on how to run his own offense?

my point was that there is more to football than speed, Dwayne Allen's response to being criticized about his 40 time at the NFL draft combine was that he "I'm not a track guy, Im a football player"
Watson has put up jaw dropping stats his past few seasons. His past 2 years he's put up over 7000 passing yards and over 2500 rushing yards and a total of 131 TD's
