Question for any of you midlands area Tigers...do you think

Jun 10, 2012, 11:20 AM

that the Columbia media is a lot to blame for the way Gamecock fans around the area are? For example, I had a conversation with a lady recently and she was going on about how exciting gamecock baseball was, so on and so forth. I thought to myself if I asked this lady whether she thought Jordan Montgomery should be the third starter for them in the super regionals that there's not a doubt in my mind I'd get a blank look.

Any thoughts on this?

Cootlumbia media is a huge PR and propaganda machine for

Jun 10, 2012, 11:36 AM

the Coots. Clemson has no one in radio, TV, or newspapers that put a one-sided story of love for the Tigers like they do for Coots here in Cootlumbia. They model it on similar SEC teams--UGA over GT, Florida over FSU, Kentucky over Louisville, etc.

We miss out on this means of generating excitement and unity in our fan base. And I don't mean endless sunshine and rainbows but what I do mean is a pro-Clemson stance permenating how the media covers us. JMHO.

Try moving to the Greenville, where I was born and raised and you will find yourself incorrect. And btw, I don't read the state either becuase they are anything but a USC propaganda machine...geez.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The State started it. It used to put both teams on the front

Jun 10, 2012, 2:05 PM

of the sport section and give each 1/2 of the page. This was in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Then USuC ended up with a 1/2 page and Clemson a 1/4 in the early 90's. Soon the whole front page was on USuC and Clemson was put on the back or deep inside the paper. And then even the whole front page of the paper in the mid 90's to the present became a Coot page for big events for them but not for the Tigers. Then State did away with its Clemson reporter too. What started off as an informative paper covering both teams the same is now a rah, rah, rah cheerleader behind the Coots.

The State newspaper hates the state....

of South Carolina. Their contempt for Sandlappers is obvious.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But they luv them some Coots.***

the state runs the website gogamecocks.com…..

Jun 10, 2012, 5:53 PM [ in reply to Re: Cootlumbia media is a huge PR and propaganda machine for ]

you just think the state isn't an scu propaganda machine because once every 4 month's Ron Morris writes an article that is critical of scu. All you nutty coot fans think it is a massive conspiracy against scu, when once in a blue moon Ron Morris writes a critical article about scu among his daily scu propaganda columns.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IMHO I would say most fans you see today around Cootlumbia..

Jun 10, 2012, 11:41 AM

sporting baseball hats, championship magnets on their car, etc...75% of them didn't even know the gamecocks had a baseball team 3 years ago. And in one night (when they won the National Championship) they have been die hard fans of the baseball team all their life.

And because of the success with their baseball team they have begun to spill over into football. Not saying that the the gamecocks didn't have a large fan base before in football, but since one sport is doing well, now all of a sudden the entire sports program at USuC is the greatest and is preseason national champs each year.

Bandwagoning at it's best. I will be curious when the baseball team doesn't make it to the championship game how many will fall off that bandwagon.

makes you wonder how sos likes being second fiddle at a school where they worship any coach who has a winning season.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thats true everywhere- its the same reason

Jun 10, 2012, 4:37 PM [ in reply to IMHO I would say most fans you see today around Cootlumbia.. ]

There were plenty of posts on this site the last two years saying "college baseball stinks" or the equal to it.

fans like to follow winning teams.

If Clemson had won back to back titles in baseball, clemson fans that couldnt tell you jack leggett's name would be decked out in baseball garb.

Thats natural

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no, you wouldn't find Clemson fans doing the samething….

Jun 10, 2012, 5:57 PM

scu has always had bandwagon fans. Clemson fans wear their orange and purple through the good and bad. Most scu fans stay in hiding ashamed of their team. They only wear gamecock clothing, when the cooties go through very brief periods of success.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sure you would

Jun 10, 2012, 10:18 PM

I know plenty of Clemson fans that are too eager to brag about how things are going in good times- and don't want to talk about things when things aren't as good.

It's the same reason my neighbor flies his Clemson flags after certain wins, and they disappear after certain losses.

fans are fans.

They do have a pretty good Journalism school...

Jun 10, 2012, 12:07 PM

I know b/c my niece attended there on a full ride and could have gone pretty much anywhere she wanted. Of course they're going to prop up their alma mater. I'm just glad I don't have to listen to it everyday.

Jun 10, 2012, 1:38 PM

My sister is a usc grad and lives in North Carolina. It wasn't until the first championship in baseball that she went crazy..never been to a game, doesn't watch them on tv, but now she has tons of t-shirts, etc. and, of course, wears them when she's down here where all the rest of the family (except son-in-law) are Clemson fans. She hasn't mentioned baseball this year, so I guess she'll find out when/if they go to the world series!

Jun 10, 2012, 1:42 PM

Yeah, because the Greenville news doesn't shine about Clemson every singe day.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson gets the whole front page and USuC none?

Jun 10, 2012, 2:07 PM

Reverse it and that is the State.

the old greenville-piedmont was pro-clemson, but i beg to differ about the greenville news, i'd say 60-40 usuc, not to mention all the local tv channels bieng pro-gamehens, makes me glad they only televise about 5 minutes of sports per newscast.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dont understand the question

Jun 10, 2012, 4:32 PM

1). A lot of fans dont necessarily keep up with all the details of a sport. I have plenty of friends that would call themselves game o k or tiger fans bit i doubt they would be up on a lot of the players.

2). Its not exactly new news that a Winning team elicits a lot of support from diehards and casual fans.

3). Media are no different. They like to cover winning teams and pump the positive-and they'll rip the negative given the chance.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Dont understand the question

Jun 10, 2012, 4:48 PM

You would have to think they have more fans because they have more students every year, plus they have 4 or five extension schools, plus Law and Medical schools.Kind of the same with the tarholes.

The big difference that I see is the SCAR radio network

107.5 The Game is light years ahead of WCCP.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the media has always been that way in columbia….

Jun 10, 2012, 5:49 PM

once scu doesn't win the national title this year, interest will start to wane about their baseball program. Before their first national title, it was very rare that you ever saw a gamecock fan with baseball specific gamecock clothing on. Same thing in football, after they beat us a few years in a row there are more gamecock fans than ever in the midlands. When we beat them in November they will all go back into hiding.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure what universe you live in but

Jun 10, 2012, 10:28 PM

it's not the real one.

USC fans like myself have been very proud of our baseball program for some time now - especially 3 Omaha trips in a row starting some 10 years ago.

Of course winnning 2 national titles in baseball will generate a lot of new clothing items- but win or lose- those aren't going back in the closet anytime soon.

If columbia had its minor league teams again...

Jun 10, 2012, 10:38 PM

There would be less people supporting the lamecocks. When columbia got rid of the minor league sports and echl program it left a bunch of people with noone to turn to for entertainment.

even the atlanta and charlotte pro teams sucked, along with the gamecocks for quite some time.

Now that they are on an upswing, "fans" are coming out of the woodworks just to have something to do.

Its for reasons like this that real fans hate going to games anymore because the stadiums are crowded with more drunk and loudmouth idiots than normal...and pushing up all the ticket prices and forcing larger donations to keep longstanding seats and parking. not to mention having to compete with all the corporations suddenly taking interest..

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Disagree

Jun 10, 2012, 10:45 PM

Sarge Frye field was packed when the Columbia Mets and Cap City Bombers were in town.

The Gamecocks are always going to be #1 in Columbia. That's simply a matter of geography and demographics.

Now if Columbia gets a top level A stadium, it would probably draw some folks away that aren't grads and aren't from South Carolina - but that would be a drop in the bucket to the overall fan base.

The present concern is - should South Carolina expand their stadium and get seating up to 9500 or 10,000.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Packed, but with a different following of people

Jun 10, 2012, 11:00 PM

From what i understand it used to be much like TF/DK used to be/still is where you knew all the people sitting around you and around the park. now its just a bunch of random jugheads.

and the post wasnt just about how packed the stadium is, but also about the city and surrounding areas following as a whole.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't sense that at all

Jun 10, 2012, 11:04 PM

and I had season baseball tickets a couple of years ago.

I don't sense many minor league fans at South Carolina games that are coming out just to see baseball- and will disappear to go see minor league ball.

A few? Sure. The large majority? no way.

The baseball team has been too good- for too long- and has built too many fans - young fans too- over the last decade.

plus, Carolina Stadium is terrific and that makes people want to come too.
