Replacing 10 seniors is going to be tough. Hopefully, there will be some good players in the portal for us.

Well even the Seniors did a nose dive this year compared to previous years. The whole team just wasn't that good. They lost a good bit of games to lower schools and losing to SE Louis twice is pretty bad. They only rebuild and hope they bring in some talent.

Disappointing end to a season that didn't meet expectations

Alot of sky-high expectations - returning national POY, 10 seniors on roster, preseason Top 10 with WCWS aspirations...was sad to not see those goals come to fruition.
Our senior class deserves alot of credit for what they were able to do out the gate, dealing w/ 1st season being cut short by COVID, winning an ACC RS title, & 4 straight NCAA tourney appearances.
But with falling short of expectations + a potential rebuild coming w/ the loss of talent, Clemson softball is definitely gonna be entering uncharted territory next year.

End? The whole season was disappointing. Get used to average because that is what this team is going to be.

It was a tough year based on the high expectations, but I think some people forget that this is a program in its infancy … and has already had a National Player of the Year (Valerie Cagle) and 4 straight NCAA tourney appearances!
Sometimes seasons don’t go exactly as you want them to, but it doesn’t mean the effort and coaching wasn’t good.

Agree with what you're saying about young programs. But it's also true that it's easier to build a new program than to fix an older program that needs to be repaired.
Duke's in their infancy too. But in most ways, Clemson should be leaps and bounds ahead of other infancy programs with the resources. There are problems that crept into the program that need addressing.

Still it was a great season where the team sure faced some adversity. Injuries, personal challenges outside of softball (Knowler’s father’s death), and probably internal team dynamics we will never really know the story.
Now comes the challenge for Rittman. There should be questions about why HS recruiting hasn’t been more successful. I know there’s finally a larger class of incoming freshmen but not if maybe one or two will contribute early. There’s been speculation Coach Jamieson and another assistant will likely be moving on so he may be looking to rebuild his staff as well. Honestly that might be a good thing to shake up coaching of the infield, pitching, and hitting (?). If I understand who’s leaving pitching will be down to McCubbin and Duncan (who rarely pitched and was shaky). Rittman also has to deal with Stanford and Cal joining the conference so competition is increasing. Not sure about SMU.

Exactly. The last thing we need is another Leggett situation. But it would be nice if Neff moved Rittman to administration. I know the girls have really been pushing nil on social media.
I agree this would be a good opportunity to give the program a makeover and bring in a young dynamic staff that not only enjoys recruiting, but development. As posted below, players get burned out too. Especially in sports like this, volleyball, tennis, lacrosse etc where you're thinking about graduating and getting in the job market. Dating, getting married yada yada. Coaches get burned out too. I just don't think Rittman enjoys the grind.

I agree Rittman was a good start up coach. The team needs a younger coach.

Can't call losing to Furman at home a great season...

Losing to 28-25 Minnesota at home. Getting owned by the SEC not named the chickens and Ole Miss. Getting swept by Duke at home. Losing the series to Virginia. And getting whipped twice by Southeastern Louisana in games that were not close.
Rittman talked of the expectation was Oklahoma City at the start of the year. Anyone remember "Breaking down the door?"
I hope there are staff changes coming.

You summed things up rather nicely. I still support this team & the seniors meant everything to this program. However, facts are facts this team under performed plain & simply. How much of it was poor coaching decisions, injuries, or just poor player development we may never truly know. With the preseason expectations placed on this team I don’t see how anyone can say it wasn’t a disappointing season as a whole. Not sure what the future looks for this team. So many questions need to be addressed.

You can’t build a program relying on that many transfers. Good teams have Freshmen and sophomores as major contributors and we have 1 to none. Our transfers were good but not great this year.

She had the look of a player that was experiencing burnout. I'm sure others on here know what I'm talking about. 2 of my children played sports and they did it year round from the age of 8 or 9. My son played baseball recieved multiple offers to play in college and before his senior year he walked away from it. He is now a Senior Pastor. My daughter played Volleyball, had some offers from smaller schools to play, but is attending Clemson this fall. Both of them got tbat Val look in their eyes. The sport was no longer fun and tbe grind became too much. My opinion, but I feel like tbe pressure and stardom at Clemson wore this young lady down. She put Clemson on the map in softball and I truly appreciate what she gave us all.

I mostly feel bad for Valerie Cagle and she’s been fun to watch the past 4 years. Clemson softball got off to a great start because of her and she deserves any recognition and respect that she gets.
