Conference CG should be defacto playoff games

CFP should start now. Lose and you're out. Who wants a rematch a week or two later? It's not about finding the 12 best teams. It is about finding the single best team that can survive the bracket.

Yes. NFL style single elimination.

That’s the way every sport on the planet does it.

No more stupid subjective rankings.

There’s no logical way to do that when you have 130+ teams

The conference championship games provide a way to earn a first round bye.

My son proposed this process a few years ago. On the same day as the conference championship games, play 3 other games among the top 6 ranked teams not playing in conference championship games. ND, UCF from a few years ago, and so on. The winners of those 8 games move on and the losers go home. True 16 team playoff. At some point any playoff system becomes win or go home. Why not start with the conference championship games? Only opposition would come from the SEC because they believe their conferences championship game loser still should make the playoffs because you know, it just means more.

So the 2 best teams in the conference play each other, knocking 1 out. Meanwhile the third and maybe fourth best teams play other games and can advance? Doesn’t make sense. Why penalize the second best team by making them play #1?

an idea

P4 Conf champ get bye
P4 Conf runner up - 5-8, gets home field

Top 2 G5 conf winner + 2 at large - seed 9-12

At least I know how I can get in without so much dependency on a dumb committee.

forgot to mention that this will never work....

Shankey's "one of these is not like the other" will prevail and he and ESPN won't ever allow the ACC to be on equal footing.

The ACC has enough football schools (Miami, VT, FSU, CU, NC, NCSU) that we "could" be on equal footing if we got the exposure and money...but we all know this would never happen

I believe that was the thought process w/ the 4-team format

That the CCGs would be defacto quarterfinals where teams would play their way in/out. But once that shifting goalposts of eye test/resume/etc started rearing its head in the committee room & talking heads, that got torpedoed in a hurry.
