Commiting?

I'd love to see sports media cease the practice of using the word "committed" when a student athlete transfers to another school to play. He COMMITTED, originally, then waivered on his commitment Respectfully, he has DECOMMITTED, TRANSFERRED and hoping the grass is greener on the other side of the fence....much of the time, IT ISN'T.

Maybe I'm just old school, but words mean things.

I prefer the term “ bought”. “Power forward John Doe has been bought by the University of …….”

if that is true.. the person who came up with it 150 years ago was a genius. They should do an episode on the History channel.

advice of LSU great Marcus Spears, who said:

"Young Man, make a 40 year commitment, not a one or two year commitment. I can go back to LSU anytime I want to, to this day, and I get treated like royalty."

You will not get that when you transfer around. You might get a little more playing time, or in these days of NIL, MORE money, because you are going to get SOME money where ever you go. But, if you have no loyalty to a school, the school will certainly owe you no loyalty, either.

Instead of committed use the words chose to attend this school.

I guess all we can say is, these players have "committed" for, at best, one year. To me that makes them TEMPS--Temporary Employees. Depending on how many Benjamins they are receiving, how many minutes they are playing, and whether or not they are starters, they might or might not come back for a second year.

Or just say “signed”, knowing that they can sign again with another team at any time. And don’t say it until it is official because the verbal word is useless in many cases.

"Renting" seems to fit.

I'm also not a fan of the announcers referring to someone as "The Transfer From Clemson..." When you're gone, you're gone.
