In Jan. 1977 which at the time was the coldest month in recorded
weather history I lived that month in a 1 room log cabin on the top
of Windsor Mt. in western Mass. It was built with "green" logs and
was not properly caulked so you could see between the logs! I was
able to wrap the whole camp in clear, thick plastic to keep out the
drafts. It had a small franklin coal stove that I burned wood in but I
had to cut it really small and of course it burn up really fast. I would
load it up when I had enough wine and herb in me to make me sleepy,
and sleep in a down bag with long undies on. I will always remember
seeing the thermometer(farthest point from stove) read 70* and in
the morning anywhere from 20* above to 20* below zero. No lie !! I
had to shovel the room 3 times that month, and a plow came every
week so I could get the 6 miles to the paved road that went to Pitts-
field where I went to the "Y" and played hoops, and then got my shower.
Cabin had no working plumbing so outhouse but don't dare sit down,
just hover above the seat. I think going thru experiences such as that
play a part in making the man....Doc

Ha Ha ! The ‘88 Liberty Bowl in Memphis. I was in the navy, going to school at a naval training base in Millington, TN ( spittin’ distance to Memphis. The Liberty Bowl never sold out so it was customary for them to just give the remaining tickets to sailors going to the technical schools over there. Most of them were poor, fresh out of bootcamp kids stuck there for the holidays anyway.

I was home on leave at my parents house in Columbia when one of my classmates who had misidentified me as a Gamecock fan called me to inform he had flashed his ID and secured a couple of tickets for me. The rest of my family are all dyed in the wool Gamecock fans so I thanked him and decided to take my older sister to the game.

Holy crap, it was frigid that night and the wind just ripped ! I parked my pickup and as we walked toward the stadium I was taunted by some coots with a BBQ grill on a trailer who had obviously noted my Clemson bumper stickers, “Hey boy, where’d ya park your tractor ?” Another one yelled, “I turned Danny in !” I replied they need not ever worry as the NCAA didn’t bother to investigate losers.

Memphis winters can be a really wet, nasty kind of cold and this was a record one. Indiana’s team showed up with parkas like the Green Bay Packers and sideline furnaces. The coots attempted to tough out the cold in their old fishnet jerseys. Hey, what did they know about post season football ?

Old Joe Morrison was a little more prepared. He shivered on the sideline in his trademark black windbreaker. A handful of the chickens emerged from the locker room for the second half wearing sweatshirts and hoodies of various odd colors underneath their jerseys.

Indiana beat the chicken crap out of them that night and I made my sister suffer to the final whistle. When we got back to my truck those losers with the BBQ grill were already long gone. I imagine they had kept with their own custom and bailed at halftime. 😄
