Clemson Run Defense. BC Run Game.
Oct 23, 2019, 6:33 PM
|
|
We have a top 10 defense. But, at times we have not looked great stopping the run. BC has a nice sized OL and a couple 240 lb. plus RB's. Our run defense will get a good workout Saturday.
https://bceagles.com/news/2019/8/19/football-focus-offensive-line.aspx
They have rushed for 2031 yards. 5.5 yards per attempt average. 355 attempts. They have only passed the football 189 times this season. https://bceagles.com/cumestats.aspx?path=football&year=2019
I think their one dimensional play will catch up with them Saturday. If they can control Time of possession and shorten the game that would be exactly the formula for a less talented team to try and beat a more talented Clemson team.
Any thoughts on this?

Agree but we’ve been great in the short field. We may end up trading some field goals for TDs. Would like to see us get up on them early and big so they can’t rely as much on the run game.

I agree. If they are forced to pass it they are going to be in the "hurt locker all day"! They still may be. But, we probably have not played a team that will be more focused/determined on establishing the line of scrimmage and ripping of 4-5 yards per carry! BC isn't talented enough to stop us and we will stop them; but I do like this match up within the game. We have ( per Dabo ) "not been as good at times stopping the run"! And that's what BC wants to do with a decent OL. The kid from Louisville broke the 28 game streak; and he isn't as good as AJ Dillon. Of course, Louisville was more balanced offensively too.

YES!!! BCs passing offense is all. I expect us to STACK the box and dare BC to beat us with there passing game. Considering the crappy weather forecast and BCs crappy defense, I look for a complete beatdown of the Eagles.
Who disagrees?

Kentucky/Georgia Terrible Weather. But Pass Given

Will they give a pass to the Tigers if they don't run it up on BC like they gave Georgia one for not routing Kentucky? Doubt it.
I hope we beat the brakes off BC but as you said, "the weather" tends to play tricks and make strange things happen.

run. They are a fast pace run attack. If they have long drives, they will definitely shorten the game and it could get scary. The fact that they lost to Kansas is ancient history. Kansas nearly beat Texas in Austin. I am really worried about this game. They could be like the Georgia Tech teams from before we got an handle on them. I just don't understand a 34 point spread. But I didn't understand the large spreads vs FSU and Louisvlle either.
What Boston College did to NC State tells me they are getting better by the week. I hope we don't have to sweat this one out.

I agree and I agree. Bad weather tends to help the underdog. I think we will make too many plays for them to seriously challenge us; but who knows.
I see this game as a God Send b/c we can concentrate on stopping some good RB's behind a big OL. Much like we will see facing a couple teams potentially. BC as well as Wisconsin are well known for OL prospects.
Clemson81to85 Did you know NC State was tops in the ACC at stopping the run prior to playing BC? This as you said, "worries me a bit".
After playing BC NC State dropped like a rock as far as rush defense goes. They gave up 429 yards. Only passed it for 103.
I am with you on this: very underrated aspect of this game.

And understand also - Nancy St. might be as you said, "a crapy team"! But, they were stopping the run at an elite level prior to playing Clemson's opponent Saturday. And, really, that's all I am saying. It's sort of like offenses look really good prior to playing a Brent Venables defense. Something like that, LOL. See the. .. . anyway.

Nancy could not tackle. And the BC oline opened up many good holes. Controlling the line will be important for our defense. Don't want to give those two big backs a head of steam.

This BC team lost to Kansas, Wake Forest and Louisville.
Sure...they put up a bunch of gaudy offensive numbers against Virginia Tech, Rutgers and NC State, but those teams all have a defense that...well...pretty much sucks (68th, 108th and 44th respectively in total defense) !!!
BV won't defend BC the same way he has defended other teams largely because BC doesn't have a much of a passing game (BC ranks 82nd nationally in pass offense). AJ Dillon is good...darn good, but he can't beat Clemson by himself.
NOTHING about this team really concerns me. Clemson may not cover, but will absolutely win comfortably (even in the rain).

If there is rain, this game will be closer than most will be comfortable with. Tigers still win, but don't cover. My reasoning for a win is, 1- Clemson is home 2-BC's passing offense is not great 3-the tiger offense is more balanced 4- BV will bring multiple run stopping looks and finally, 5-Clemson respects BC's run game and should be prepared for it. Sloppy conditions and turnovers are what concerns me most. If the Tigers take care of the ball and can stop BC's run game, Clemson wins walking away, but probably doesn't cover. If there are terrible conditions, Clemson turns the ball over several times and is unable to consistently stop the run, could be a long night....otherwise Tigers win by couple of touchdowns.

Always seem to be closer than expected. A wet game likely would benefit the Eagles but I have a lot of faith in Coach V and expect the Tigers to win by 20 or more. Avoid turnovers ... please.

I think we see more 4-3 run-stop looks from our defense this week. I think BV likes the flexibility but I think he was relying on his back 7 experience to allow more time to build experience and depth on our new DTs. And I feel like we're reaching that point in the season where we can run 4 down a little more....if BV so chooses.
And rain would definitely level the playing field. It would have minimal effect on BC running game but could have negative effect on our passing attack.

As a BC fan I would say BC has two extremes with its team: 1) it's the best OL and running back combo for BC since I can remember (and I've been a fan for a long time); BUT 2) it might be the worst BC defense I've seen. But I will say, the defense played better against NCSU as a result of better schemes and playing some of the younger guys.
I actually don't think sloppy weather favors the less talented team. It will be harder for our DBs to adjust to your athletic WRs in sloppy weather. I am hoping for a dry field, but that's probably not going to happen.

I have zero concerns. We won't defend BC the same way
Oct 24, 2019, 8:55 AM

we've defended most other teams this year because they can't pass. Venables is going to be aggressive with run blitzes and putting extra defenders in the box and BC will not be able to exploit that with their passing game. I bet we hold them to 4 YPC or less.
