Clemson "is back"

You know we're good when people are saying that we're "back" when we were just in the playoffs in 2020 and won the conference in 2022.

We literally had two "down" years (one consisting of 10 wins and a bowl victory and the other with 9 wins and a bowl victory) and people wrote us off 🤣.

Crazy.

Indeed. We really pulled decent seasons off those years. Still better than pretty much anything from Hatfield through Bowden.

The last 3 seasons of Clemson football would be historic run of greatness at about 100 other D1 Universities.

Clemson simply had so much talent, just could not bring it all together. UGA was scary, many of us here, myself included, had concerns about the season and rightfully so. Team seems to have a swag, confidence, moxie, that they had been missing for a long time.

Go Tigers!!

With CLemson logic, that means that Georgia State is better than Bama, UGA, and CLemson.

That's funny. You leave out a ton of details. Let me help you and you're welcome in advance...

The ACC only scheduled 2 games vs. the top 4 SEC teams in the regular 2023 season...the ACC lost both. This does not include UGA's bowl win over undefeated FSU 63-3 (that would make it 3-0 SEC). For anyone crowing about the ACC's record versus the SEC 2023 regular season, let's take a closer look at those games:

FSU over LSU
FSU over Florida
Kentucky over Louisville
Ole Miss over Georgia Tech
UGA over Georgia Tech
Clemson over South Carolina
North Carolina over South Carolina
Miami over Texas A&M
Tennessee over Virginia
Wake Forest over Vanderbilt

In total, the ACC was 6-4 versus the SEC this season. However, it makes the most sense to group these matchups into like teams versus like teams and unlike teams if you're going to try to honestly compare conferences, so let's do that.

Like Teams:
Top-4 vs Top-4 --- There were only two games pitting teams that both ended up a Top-4 team in their conference this season. The SEC was 2-0 in those games.
Second-4 vs Second-4 --- There were no games pitting teams that both ended up a Second-4 team in their conference this season.
Bottom-6 vs Bottom-6 --- There was only one game pitting teams that both ended up a Bottom-6 team in their conference this season. The ACC won that game.

Unlike Teams:
SEC Top-4 playing down --- There were no games in this category.
ACC Top-4 playing down --- There were three games pitting a Top-4 ACC team versus a lower SEC team. The ACC was 2-1 in those games.
SEC Second-4 playing down --- There were two games pitting a Second-4 SEC team versus a lower ACC team. The SEC was 1-1 in those games.
ACC Second-4 playing down --- There were two games pitting a Second-4 ACC team versus a lower SEC team. The ACC was 2-0 in those games.

So, based upon the randomness of the schedule and assuming a like conference would - on average - split like games and win unlike games in which they have the higher conference-ranked team at the end of the season, the ACC should have gone 7-3 against the SEC this season.

Additionally, the Top-8 SEC teams went 4-1 versus the ACC this season.
Meanwhile, the Top-8 ACC teams went 2-3 versus the SEC this season.

In fact, the only SEC-ACC game the ACC team won when they likely shouldn't have - based on the end-of-year results - is when Miami beat Texas A&M (who ended up firing their head coach this season).

Notable teams Clemson has a harder SOS then
Penn State
Auburn
Vanderbilt
Miami
Iowa State
Mississippi state
Oklahoma state
Arizona state
Virginia Tech
1 spot behind Michigan
The narrative that we don’t play anyone has to stop. Power 4 football is power 4 football. It’s been “cupcake schedule” for 10 years and we’ve held our own against any “top dog” you wanna throw out there. It’s a weak excuse to overinflate the SEC rankings so that you can get 4 or 5 playoff teams in now. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that 7 or 8 sec teams would win the acc or big12. It’s just simply untrue. I’d take your big three this year to win it Alabama Uga and Texas but beyond that put whoever else from your conference you want and they wouldn’t win it. The pac 12 and big 10 embarrassed the sec in the playoffs last year. The ones that got cherry picked ahead of fsu who was the more deserving team. (And I hate fsu) There is a gap in your best versus our best for sure. But the depth isn’t what you say it is. You have 3 contenders and the rest are fraudulent pretenders. They beat up radford women’s lacrosse college for the elderly and Mississippi technical college a&m for the deaf and blind for a couple weeks and all of a sudden the whole sec is top 25. It’s a joke and everyone but sec fans see it. It’s a weak crutch.

What idiot made this list? Someone who thinks that Auburn, Vandy, and MS St all have a weaker schedule than CLemson? I'll just take those SEC teams vs. today's ranked teams you listed...

Auburn plays Oklahoma, UGA, Missouri, Texas A&M, and Bama.

Vandy plays Missouri, Bama, Texas, LSU, Tenn

Miss State plays Texas, UGA, Texas A&M, Tenn, Missouri, Ole Miss

CLemson plays UGA and Pitt (ranked 20th for now)

The narrative that CLemson plays no one outside of their blowout loss to UGA is factually correct. Facts are not a "weak crutch" or a "joke and "everyone but SEC fans see it." In fact, CLemson has beaten no one but cupcakes since 34-3, and all of a sudden you think CLemson is elite?

I understand the SEC hatred (especially UGA) from CLemson fans though. Your team has a winning record against only ONE SEC team...South Carolina (historically the worst SEC team).

Also, so far in 2024 it's 4-2...

UGA blows out CLemson
Missouri beat BC
Vandy beat VT
Tenn blows out NCst
Miami blows out UF
Cal beat Auburn

Florida is the 5th worst SEC team and Auburn is the worst SEC team.

It is just my opinion perhaps, but the conferences need to go away and be replace with East south North west leagues and place teams on theirwin loss records insteads of this age old bickering about strength of schedule.

I appreciate the props when someone says we're "back'. Even though we have been part of the discussion for over 10 years now. "back" in this context would mean back in contention. And that's a good thing no matter where it comes from.

I do take issue with talking heads saying, "when will so-and-so be back?" Tennessee and Nebraska come to mind. Why do these teams need to be "back"? Texas was another one. Notre Dame always is. I recall one panel that was actually discussing Tenn and Nebraska about 5-10 years ago. Finally, one analyst says, "They're not relevant. Why are we talking about them? When they're relevant again, we'll talk about them." Amen.

My confidence in this team is soaring right now. All we really needed was a QB. IDK why people can't see that our receivers never expected to get the ball when DJ was behind center. He stared at his primary from the snap all the way through their routes then either tripped over his on feet, juke himself off his feet or dumped the ball to his outlet guy.

Why do you guys think FSU in in the gutter this season?

Agreed. All of us old timers remember the really down years when we had losing records and went years without a bowl game. Now winning 9-10 games and getting a bowl win constitutes a down year lasting maybe a couple of years. I can live with that.
