as Director of Horticulture & Livestock for a period longer than George Washington himself lived there.

His name is Dean Norton and his first time to hear about Clemson in early 70’s was from a Clemson student working at the estate with him that couldn’t stop saying “Clemson this, Clemson that ” ..so rhe next Summer Dean headed for Clemson SC in his Triumph Spitfire and within minutes he fell in love with the campus & terrain and enrolled & was accepted the same day!

As a new student in 1973 his parents told him not to join any group but instead study..but from his dorm room he could hear Tiger Band practicing at Norris Hall and it was killing him not being able to join.

Soon thereafter, being a little depressed, he went to the bookstore and a flyer there stuck to his shoe and when he retrieved it he saw it was an open invitation to join the band..so he took off to their meeting room and joined up within 5 minutes, as a Trumpeter.

After graduation in 1977 he returned to Mt Vernon as a specialist with boxwoods and preceded to have 5000 of them cut down since diseased and over the next year replanted new ones but most of them died since he irrigated & fertilized them too much and the roots rotted.

Thus, he started to do much research and as he improved his techniques over the years he became one of the worlds authorities on boxwoods including being an advisor to the British Queens head gardener and now in retirement has been selected to be involved with The White House lawn & garden restoration.

You can check out the full story on the recent Clemson World magazine.

Enjoy the pics of Dean at Mt V and wearing the PAW.

Below is the link for the article. Not to brag too much but my wife wrote the story on Dean. Sounds like an awesome guy and great Tiger!

Funny. My wife writes for Clemson World also. She wrote the article on the Powers family for whom the business school is named.
