Clemson going to the Nickel

Clemson went to the Nickel look on defense when SC lined up with any formation that didn’t include both a TE and a RB. Those looks create a matchup problem for a defense with 3lbs.
So they essentially duped us into it and that’s just smart by them I guess. I still don’t get by Woodaz was the one following Sellers and not Brown who is more capable athletically.
I could be wrong, this is just a guess.

You have a defensive coordinator and LB position coach that has basically one year of coaching experience; total.

Alternatively, look at the best defensive coordinators in the NFL. They exude DC vibes and are mostly are old grizzled dudes with 1,000 years of collective experience - Spagnuolo, Fangio, Bowles, etc.

A thousand times this. I couldn't believe the personnel choices and scheme in that 4th quarter.

I believe they over thought the whole deal and should have left Sammy in. The guy was not going to beat you with his arm and had beat you all day with his legs. So why do you go to the nickel to make it easier for them to utilize the only thing that they had going.
Definitely a head scratcher.

Jimmy's and Joe's usually trump X's and O's. Pretty simple maxim that holds up. Sammy is one of, if not the, Jimmy/Joe on defense. Ridiculous to have him off the field that much in crunch time.

I think when they went 4wr or other passing looks it kind of forced Clemson to drop the 3rd linebacker and add another DB out of fear of getting really bad matchups. Then Sellers feasted when that 3rd LB (brown) went to the sidelines.
Woodaz didn’t have a chance spying Sellers.

I think he could have if he tackled better

You win these games in the spring and summer doing tackling drills until your brains fall out and you make your coach want to puke from watching you do them so much. You empty everything you got then so you can do it when it matters most. The LB position has not done this all year, with the exception of Sammy Brown. I am wondering if the upper class men just cruised this year knowing they would have no competition pushing them for game reps, because really Sammy was the only one that looked like he was sort of half way prepared. Makes me wonder if Sammy was killing himself in practice all year to get a look and the rest were just costing on laurels....

Defense is soft. Far from a Danny Ford defense that would knock your brains out.

So, I know we are talking Nickel here, but I still think if you had a ounce of common sense or creativity, you could have made that work. I mean that was one of the great things about Venables is he would utilize personnel in a traditional position sense, like safety or line backer, but they would always break some sort of tendency or be used in an unconventional way. Venables seemed to know his players capabilities more, they were also slightly more talented across the board, but he would throw a wrinkle in based off of tendencies the opposition had shown. I don't see that effective creativity with Goodwin.

This is a great post. I know BV would have schemed a way to get Sammy on the field and would have made sure our defense would have done a better job than anyone else at stopping that freak running all over the field.
I don’t think I’ve seen an individual effort like Sellers had Saturday. It was almost paranormal, and as another poster said somewhere, traumatic.

So, I watched Sellers play several times his senior year....

Anyone could tell he was the best athlete on the field every time. He also is a fierce competitor. I was praying that Clemson would go after him, just to keep Syracuse from getting him (mind you this is before the ACC expansion) because I did not want Clemson to face him every year. Then when Babers got fired and they hired Brown, he flipped to SC, and I knew that would come back to bite us in the A$$. I don't know how you just don't go after a kid like that, and I don't know any particulars of his recruitment, but it just looks like Clemson/Grisham/Dabo/ whoever, messed up terribly on that one.

Based on the assumption that USC was going to change their approach at halftime--BUT DIDN'T and then Porkchop couldn't figure that out & didn't revert back to what was working early in the game.

schematically flawless...Must be something else because the defense worked too good...All Sellers could do was run all over us, we had literally schemed everything else away from him

the issue Saturday was the offense simply cannot get the job done scoring points.
Moving the ball is nice, chunk plays are nice, but WAYYY to often the ugly 3 and out hits and it is at the worst times.
Coots defense is not that good, the defensive ends were neutralized all day. Yet Clemson only score 2 TD's on the legs of CK ?? Something is wrong, very wrong with the offensive schemes/game plans because moving the ball from the 25 to the 25 is not a problem, but beyond that is beyond concerning.
Yes defense gave up the TD at the end, but holding them to only 10 points up to that point was pretty admirable. Sammy is our best LB, sorry but he is. Carter is a good player, but not as good as Sammy Brown.
Sammy deserved, and needed, to be on that field. You win, you lose, with your lest players on the field. Freshman, senior, who cares. Offense had chances, squandered them repeatedly.
