CLEMSON 5th MOST TALENTED TEAM IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Congrats Tigers on showing some fight against a tough Texas team. I don't think anyone in CFB can deny the success that Dabo has had over the years, and he will go down in history as one of the best CFB coaches in the game.
With that said, I have seen a lot of bellyaching over the past few years with many attributing the slight dip to a lack of talent. Per the 2024 Talent Composite Rankings, CU is the 5th most talented team in CFB. On the surface talent acquisition does not appear to be an issue at Clemson with the majority of your roster being top level talent.
I'm just curious, why are so many people stating that CU does not have the talent to be successful?

The value of an elite QB cannot be overstated. DJ was mediocre and Cade in his sophomore year with a new OC was marginally better.
The “drop” was almost wholly due to not having that elite QB. Still, we’re among the top 10 in wins the “drop” years.

We have the talent which begs the question…why didn’t we beat anybody with a pulse this year and why did we lose to all 3 of the sec schools we played? Dabo is past his prime and has lost his passion!!

The defense lacks fundamentals.
-Tackling -Taking on Blocks -Shedding Blocks -Making Reads -Attacking the blocker and clogging the hole (gotta make the read first) -Instincts (Can't really be coached but a bad coach can ruin someone with naturally good instincts)

we have some holes in our lineup.
When we beat Bama 44-16 we had no holes, no lack of depth and our twoes were and good as our starters.
I think our recruiting fell off the map when DJ was here though the defense kept DJ led offense in the game.
Cade got almost no playing time that season because DJ needed the reps. He still needs 5 more college football seasons before he's ready for the NFL unless he changes positions and becomes a waterboy.
Anyway, two seasons is a very short time to return to the playoff after such a horrible quarterback.
We're back on track to compete at the highest level next season and I wasn't ashamed or embarrassed about the Texas game, not one bit.
So how's your team doing this season?

Our recruiting class this year is average at at best. Dabo use to be an elite recruiter but has fallen off big time! We finished up ranked in the mid 30s this year.

Funny when everyone started throwing money at recruits our recruiting fell off.
Dabo isn’t going to run his program like the players are paid mercenaries. Sure we pay NIL, but he brings in guys who plan to stay at Clemson until they graduate. Some guys just want to chase money and they won’t be playing for Clemson. For instance, South Carolina has had 15 players entering the portal this year, Alabama has had 16, Texas has had 9, and Clemson has had 3.
The team should be better next year with most of our starters returning and using he portal to fill our gaps. We are a young team and they will continue to get better. This year was a rebuilding year and there was a lot of improvement over last year. If Cade returns, it’s

This is certainly true, BUT---we have some gaping holes in our roster, namely at DE, LB and RB.
We've missed on some guys, lost some guys to injury, and didn't have the numbers we should have. So it's a mixed bag. Coaching, roster management, etc.

LB we have Brown and Woodass returning with some youth that has flashed. May lose someone a t that position otherwise we’re good, and I don’t see any portal guys. With the two signees coming in and everyone but Mafah back, I also think we’re solid at RB. IMO we need a safety, but otherwise we should be solid on both sides of the ball. Offense should be even better and defense has the dudes - just obviously lacking in the gameday coaching.

This “stat” is based on the perception of a recruiting service measuring high school players. Whether or not that perception translates to on field performance at the college level depends on each individual player. There is no way to accurately state that Clemson has the 5th best roster in football.

....will try to compartmentalize in an attempt to make things make sense. It's human nature.
Those who complain about Clemson's talent are really just admitting they have no clue how to fix what's broken.
Exhibit A: The Citadel ran for 300 yards on us.
DL at Clemson are VERY big, VERY talented, and VERY athletic. Yet, they've seemingly forgotten how to tackle, how to fit run gaps, etc..... which points to a coaching deficiency, not lack of talent.
I don't know whether you're a Coot posing as a Clemson fan, or just someone who's common sense compelled you to post. Either way, I believe it's something Dabo will address in the off-season.

This is raw talent from recruiting numbers, not experience. This year the defense had almost 80% underclassmen, compared to around 50% in 2018. (Texas had less than 50% this year) Experience, development and leadership goes a long way when you are playing top 10 ten teams that have loaded their roster up with veteran players from the portal. A 5* freshman in most cases is not the same as a 5* junior or senior. There is a lot of development and conditioning the happens over 4 years.
Not using the portal for 4 years has been a bigger factor than we want to admit. Other teams bring in experienced players to add depth, while we have brought in Freshman. Most freshman aren’t game ready yet and in past seasons would be redshirted, but we have had to play them. That brings good experience for future seasons, but they make mistakes, haven’t bulked up yet so they miss tackles, and don’t have the confidence to be leaders on the field yet.
We also have a DC who has been learning on the job for the last 3 seasons. He was an analyst prior to becoming a DC, not a coach and there is more to coaching football than just watching film and calling plays.

14 players from Bama have hit the portal so far. UGA getting hit hard as well. Those rankings most likely are inaccurate today.

Those stars don't mean squat. Highschool player evaluation has become more about the buzz and popularity of a player than their actual skill level.
Scouts and recruiting rankings are in it for the money just as everyone else is. This is why on staff player evaluators are so important these days.
More and more 5 stars are turning out to be closer to 2 or 3 star players.

This just proves how little we are developing the talent we have. Very few players outside of our current OL, Cade, and TJ have become better in the last 8 years, since the moment they stepped foot on campus. We are not developing talent.

1. Our first-string has talent as a whole. I will say that 247 only looks at pure numbers, it doesn't look at where those players are. If one team has 6 5 Stars, but they're all receivers, while another has 3 5 Stars at QB, RB, and Receiver, the latter team will be better. We do have some pretty clear gaps in talent at some positions. But overall, I do agree that talent isn't really our problem.
2. We have a serious lack of fundamentals and development which is a problem that stems from hiring position coaches who are unqualified. We can see the evidence there in what Luke did this year to the offensive line. They went from a bottom 25 offensive line to a top 30 offensive line in one season, and are the exact same players. The only thing that changed was that our in-house line coach was replaced with a real line coach.
3. While a lot of our first-stringers are blue chips, there is a huge drop off in talent between our first string and backups. Notice the stats you published. Alabama and UGA have 150% of the bluechip players we have. That doesn't impact first string depth, but it really impacts your backups. We lack quality depth, which can be seen in those games where our backups were put in in garbage time and then proceeded to get outplayed by backups at mediocre teams. It's very different from our peak where we could just plug and play players. I think that's both an issue in recruiting AND in that we struggled to win any games until this year, and so our backups have gotten very little playing experience.
But yes. It's much more a problem in coaching than in talent. Our positional coaches are often mediocre and if you compare ours with the other teams you flagged, it's a stark difference. And defensively, it goes up to Goodwin, who is so scared of allowing big plays, he refused to grasp the nuances of the defensive playcalling and actually play to our personnel's strength.
