That was awesome!! I loved hearing Coach Howard tell stories on the pre game show too. Pack is a great story teller in his own right.

I met coach Howard one time when he was recruiting former USUC QB Mike Fair at Parker High School. He was recruiting him for Baseball.Mike is a former team-mate of mine from pee wee ball to High School. We played baseball and football.
Mike was a heck of a QB and a Baseball player but Coach didn't see him as a QB.This guy became a SC Senator and would have been an asset to Clemson. Coach Howard was a big man and a giant to us. I was impressed by him.

I loved hearing Frank Howard on those Sunday morning shows. I had a long conversation with him when I was a student at Clemson.

The man was terrifying and easy to talk to at the same time. I was lucky enough to talk with him a number of times back in 1982. I'll always cherish those short talks with Coach Howard.

Back when Bobby Bowden came to FSU he used the show to recruit. He didn't recruit players so much as he recruited their parents. Every time there was a highlight with a player he would say something like, "I was so glad to see his daddy there. We had a great conversation before the game." "I saw his momma yesterday. She's so proud of her boy and she should be. She raised him right."
One year he closed his last show of the season by saying, "And, I want to thank those mommas and daddys for raising such fine young men and sending them to FSU to play football."
You may not have learned much about football watching his show, but you learned a lot about their mommas and daddys.

Tommy did the same. Guess he followed in Daddy’s footsteps.

Amen! I recall Danny Ford saying a lot of “very, very happy, very, very proud” and Tommy Bowden talking about the player’s mommas.

Thanks for sharing this. Coach Howard was every bit a character as Packer says---and then some.

I spent a long weekend at Clemson with a good friend of mine in 1963. We ran into Coach and I said hello. He ask me do you play football boy? I said yes sir. I was 6'3" 185. He said well boy you need to gain a little weight and come back and talk to me. I ran into him a gain in 1967 and he remembered me. He was the most dedicated person Clemson has ever had. He put us on the map and loved Clemson until the day he died!!!
