Charleston sues Clemson for Demolition by Neglect

Clemson needs to obey Charleston’s laws if they like them or not. They must be better stewards of historical buildings.

I grew up on Johns Island, near the research station. It was always active during the 1960s and 70s when I lived there. After working for Clemson from 2020-2022, I am not surprised at this situation. I saw a definite inability to make decisions that led to forcing people to try to undertake projects while only approving ridiculously low amounts of funding to get them done. The results are half-azzed and a lot of times, the university employees have to do a lot of the work themselves as was mentioned in this article regarding the renovating and reopening of the greenhouses. Ignoring the situation and waiting until the building is too far gone is a poor tactic and makes everything look terrible as it deteriorates.
The white lab building was definitely a landmark for those of us who grew up in the area. Restoring it would be the best thing, IMO. Razing it and building something that commemorates its history would be ok, I guess. The last thing that area needs is another apartment or housing complex especially that close to the Stono River.

I appreciate your reply. People who do not live in Charleston area have little knowledge of the importance of saving old structures.

Happy to take that land off of their hands AND restore the buildings...for just a wee bit of zoning consideration on the remaining 300 acres.
