Changing Tillman Halls name would be stupid

Jan 16, 2015, 11:12 PM

It's kinda like once you start down that road, it won't stop there. Sure there might be some bad pub but who cares. You cannot cave to this stupid pressure.

Might as well change SC flag then too and Miss flag and the ole stars n stripes too. It'll never end. That's why you don't give in to hostage takers.

The history of our country isn't perfect and quite frankly it is never gonna suit everyone. May as well change 5000 other historical site names as well. Presidents 1-15 might need to be stricken. It's stupid.

If changing this would change something I'd say ok but it won't. There will b another demand in a few months and so on...

I've seen wax imagery of slavery depicted in museums and I don't see Jesse demanding it be removed. I hate to break it to some people but people today can't change history and if it were not for that history, you might not have the freedoms you have today. More white people were inslaved by the Egyptians than any amount of blacks. So why don't we have the pyramids torn down ??? Some parts of the world would rather see Americans dead so what.... We go attack them tomorrow?

Give a mouse a cookie....

Jan 16, 2015, 11:24 PM

I just couldn't drive on that road knowing he sent all those Japanese to internment camps. We should change the name of that road.

the statue of honoring Ben Tillman. Clemson students that love Clemson, but hate any honoring of such a man should be OUTRAGED that Columbia, home of the University of South Carolina, has this abhorrent STATUE honoring Tillman. OMG!!!1111!!!

So then, you guys are okay with the Muslims in NY building a Mosque near the 9/11 monument? I mean they own the property. 9/11 is history we cannot change, too, right? Also, lets use that in the Tiger recruiting pitch to recruits. Let's say parents send us your young men to our state and come play under the Confederate flag and in the shadows of Mr. Tillman's bust that hated young black males like yourselves more than the Pope loves God.

Re: And the fact that mere steps from my dorm

Jan 17, 2015, 12:58 AM

Sure. Let the Muslims build their mosque (where is there available property in lower Manhattan to build this? Have you been to ground zero? It's so busy you wouldn't notice it if you weren't looking). I'd almost rather there be a house of worship there instead of what's actually there...a tourist trap. People making a dollar off the death over 3000 civilians should be more sickening but I digress. Real Muslims have nothing to do with terrorism. Just like real Christians have nothing to do with Westboro Baptist.

Not quite sure what a random mosque has to do with the pointless renaming of an iconic building and the hissy fits being thrown by a bunch of restless, entitled, attention starved, finger pointing, excuse minded, race embracing, minority-status loving ### clowns.

Every school in the south and probably most in the nation that were founded around the time of Clemson or before have buildings named after former slave owners. Why? Because that's the way the world worked. So every school we compete against in recruiting is at the same disadvantage. You don't see other schools changing the names of their buildings so not to upset recruits. And you don't see recruits not commiting to certain schools because of certain buildings being named after certain people. Maybe in 100 more years people will be ashamed that their ancestors owned gas powered vehicles. It's called history. Times change. Can't just erase the past.

Jan 17, 2015, 7:31 AM

But we lub tillman! This is an easy thing to do to make a good many feel more comfortable about being a Clemson citizen and attending the University. Should have been done a long time ago. I am a white guy. I say pick your battles and this one sure isn't worth picking

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tillman gave us the University and the Chicken Curse

Jan 17, 2015, 7:59 AM

to go along with it. He should be honored for those two things. He was a politician which makes him a lying no good weasel just like most politicians.

You know...that same argument was heard a lot when discussing Jim Crow laws and such...what's right is right. Some folks are just hard-wired to knee jerk anytime someone questions their heritage or wants to change something...I guess I can understand that to some degree. But there is such as thing as an absolute truth sometimes...and this is just one of them. Change the name...the man doesn't deserve to be honored...remembered yes...but not honored.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're right. He doesn't need to be honored.

Jan 18, 2015, 9:23 AM

He needs to be remembered. That's how we remember him. Tillman Hall. You're soft.

Well put.
We all have made mistakes in the "past". Living in the Past is for losers.
History can't be changed or removed and we should not try to.

Maybe we shouldn't celebrate MLK day since he was an adulterer. Everyone is flawed, but it doesn't have to negate other great things they accomplish.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Tillman knew blacks attended Clemson HE would change it

College Gameday if they ever come back will change locations

The other broadcast images of the university will not show the building
