Keep the auto bids for conference championship winners, but seed all playoff teams based on how good they are believed to be.
You know, just like the NCAA basketball tournament has done for many years.

Comparing a 64 team field to a 12 team field seems a bit stupid.

It may seem stupid, except that there are many more schools that field major BB programs than both major FB -&- major BB teams.
I’ll say this about further expansion of the CFP field. Fans of the ‘have not’ fans will remain more engaged in CFB overall if the CFP included more teams from each of the conferences … including the Memphis State and FIU type conferences.
The main short term downside would be that the early brackets of the CFP would get much worse media ratings than the current first round games. A secondary short term downside would be that the traditional ‘have not’ conference CFP participants would theoretically play a few more games during the season than would be reasonable for (actual student) student athletes.
Longer term (for the long term good of CFP), the benefit of a significantly expanded CFP would to keep a larger segment of the population interested in CFB overall, since ‘So you are saying I have a chance’ remains to validate their team’s status.

If a conference is 1-9 in the post season they should just do away with the auto bids

Those bowl records are deceiving with so many opt outs. If it isn't a playoff game then it's nothing more than a glorified scrimmage or Spring Game

But I’ll address it anyway.
There are 3 teams who got embarrassed so far in this year’s CFP, and all of them were at-large selections. So…what point do you think you are making?

Go away.
If your team is rarely relevant, they should not be given much consideration.

Try not losing 3 games in the regular season without winning your conference championship. You wouldn’t have to worry about autobids.

If you keep the same old man geezer 12 person panel, it's gonna be a problem. I' would be comfortable with it if if was a pre determined computer ranking. One that did not factor a human poll. Like RPI. Who did you beat and what did they do afyer you beat them. No more of they beat team X when they were #6, but ended up with a 7-5 record. Example Texas A&M or Pitt. If you allow old geezers to manipulate polls that are factored into the computer ranking it will always be manipulated.

It will ultimately (2026?) be that no conference champ gets an automatic entry.

Without the auto seeding - why play the conference championship game if you have the best record?
If it can't help you, it can only hurt you.

That’s how it was for SMU.. no point in SMU trying in the conference championship game because they got in the playoffs anyways win or lose

So it’s just another playoff game then.
I get the arguments for G5 teams that seem to never had a shot of getting in like UCF years back but if you’re SMU & you’re afraid to play for your conference title on the fear of being left out of the playoffs then you’re simply admitting you shouldn’t be in the playoffs to begin with.
If your opportunity is in your own hands then you have zero excuses.. a la Alabama.

It would be terrible for CFB overall if a conference championship meant nothing other than potential style points as far as CFP participation is concerned.
Even excluding the fans’ outrage that their conference had been diminished overall, the media would hate it if they lost a viable ‘product’ I.e., conference championship games to a lower ratings destiny.

Why would any of you think this is a good idea? ACC will unlikely ever get a bye. The SEC runner up and 3rd place team will be ranked higher than any ACC team.

Changes are coming because SEC did not get Bama in! Ole Miss SC. No rules means 4or5 from SEC and BIG10. ACC and big 12 maybe get one each or ND will always get one with 10 wins.

Assuming the ACC is even a stakeholder, if Jim Phillips agrees to this, the FSU/Clemson lawyers need to subpoena his personal bank records

That Clemson, being less respected than both Boise and AZ State, gave blue blood media darling TX a run for their money validatesvboth AZ State and Boise before they even play their games.
If either team wins, then that would be the exclamation point.
