CFP expansion, opt-outs, and professionalizing.

Playoff expansion needs to happen now. All these opt-out cowards are making a “business decision.” Wouldn’t that change if their team were in the playoffs? I mean major expansion, 32 or 64 team expansion… ‘cause bowl season has been a dud. This professionalizing of college athletics in general… NIL, transfer portal, opt-outs… the NCAA’s lack of consistency, leadership, competence… what is college football gonna look like in 5 more years?

So a 64 team playoff requires six games to complete. Given that 15 is the max reasonable number of games are you suggesting a nine game regular season?

Football, unlike other sports, is brutal. If we expand the CFP then we will have to reduce the number of games played in the regular season. I would be in favor of an 8 team play off and doing away with bowls. I love bowl season, but it is dying. The attraction of playing in a meaningless extra game is not there anymore for many players. You have to remember when all these bowls started cropping up teams only played nine games in a regular season. There was no conference play off game either. I will add that I don't think there are even 8 teams capable of winning a NC in any given year.

All the traditional bowl tie-ins don’t mean what they use to. The CFP rounds should merge with the bowls system. It doesn’t matter if all the teams in the playoff are “worthy.” You get to see it decided on the field.

If you made me football Czar I could go on for days with the changes I would make, but what I’m saying is that bowl season is dying and playoff expansion can help. Not sure who decides 15 games was the magical reasonable limit… Kenny Picket decided that 13 games was his reasonable limit.

It’s more Covid this year that anything else, expansion will happen to 12-16 tops and that will solve the opt out issues for some of the big names, playing for a championship is different. And to touch on you mentioning NIL, if it doesn’t expand I can see players having an “appearance fee” for the sponsor of the bowl game to pay to play, wouldn’t shock me in the slightest… IE Kenny Picket would have said, pay me 500k and I’ll play so you get better ratings and make more money if not I am opting out. Could be the future, who knows.
